- Chapter 19 - Momentary
Momentary
The next morning, I wake up feeling cold.
Emi has taken all of the blanket, leaving me uncovered.
I check the time on my smartphone, and see it is a little past 6 AM.
Souji-kun told us that he has a part-time job today and will be leaving at 8.30AM.
So, I get up, go to the kitchen sink to wash my face, and check the available ingredients left to make breakfast.
We still have some rice, eggs, miso, dashi, and dried wakame.
I wash 2 cups of rice, and put it in the rice cooker. While it is cooking, I make some miso soup and fried three eggs for us.
As I’m cooking breakfast, Souji-kun wakes up.
“Good morning, Souji-kun. I’m making breakfast for us, please wash your face and wait for a moment.”
“Good morning, Ami-san. I’m sorry for troubling you so early in the morning.”
Souji-kun replied so while still half-asleep.
Even though I only exchanged greetings with Souji-kun, my heart is throbbing, and I can’t bring myself to look directly at his face.
Once the rice is ready, I prepare three portions of it into bowls and place them on the kotatsu along with the miso soup and fried eggs.
I bought extra bowls, plates and chopsticks last week so that we don’t have to wash the dishes every time we want to eat together. So this time, even with three people, we have enough tableware for us.
After I finished preparing our breakfast, I wake Emi up, who is curled up in her futon.
“Emi! Breakfast is ready, wake up!”
As the three of us are eating breakfast, we started to talk whether fried eggs are best with sauce, soy sauce, or mayonnaise.
In Souji-kun’s apartment, there are only salt and pepper for seasonings, which I used for the fried eggs. However, we felt that adding something more would be nice, and that led us to this discussion.
I’m on team sauce.
Souji-kun prefers soy sauce.
While Emi loves mayonnaise.
So, me and Emi decided that we will go shopping while Souji-kun is at work.
As we are talking about this matter, Souji-kun hands me one of the spare keys to the apartment.
Souji-kun leaves at 8.30 AM as he has planned.
Afterwards, I ask Emi to take care of the dishes while I clean the bathroom and toilet.
Then, we continue to do various household chores. We hang out the futon, sweep the room and kitchen, and clean the windows.
While doing so, I remember about the curtains that I brought home and made last week. With Emi’s help, I take them out of the sports bag and hang them on the curtain rail.
To our surprise, it turns out quite well.
Once we finished cleaning, I check my smartphone to see if there are any local supermarket promotions.
Since it’s Sunday today, there are various discounts available, so Emi and I quickly change our clothes and go shopping together.
At the supermarket, we buy a bunch of vegetables like potatoes, carrots, onions, bean sprouts, as well as some spaghetti and udon that would last for a long time.
Emi wants to buy some snacks.
“No, we shouldn’t waste our money!”
I told her so. However, she still insists of buying it.
“In that case, let’s make some pudding together. There is some milk left in the apartment that need to be used up anyways.”
I suggested so.
So, we decided to buy a pack of pudding mix instead of snacks.
At the supermarket, we also buy some condiments like sauce, soy sauce, soup base along with furikake.
(TN: Furikake is Japanese rice seasoning/condiment)
On our way home, we stop by a drugstore to buy shampoo, conditioner and sanitary products for us.
When we return to the apartment, I immediately start to organize the things we just bought.
As I’m organizing the things, Emi seems really excited about making the pudding.
“Onee-chan! Pudding! Pudding!”
So, I decided to organize the things later and make pudding with Emi first.
It’s a simple recipe that only requires mixing and cooling. Since we don’t have a fridge, we open the window in front of the sink and place the cups of pudding there to cool them in the cold outdoor air.
