- Chapter 6 - Candidate
Candidate
The next morning, Souji-kun seems to have left for school first.
Then, me and Emi go to school together.
When I enter my classroom, Souji-kun is sitting in his seat, reading a book.
During the class, he maintains his usual posture, sitting up straight and taking notes. It’s as if he is really focused at the lesson. Even when he is called, he answered everything flawlessly in a very composed manner.
Just from observing his demeanor, it is evident to anyone that he is very clever.
With his handsome face and cool character, didn’t take long for Souji-kun to become the center of attention among the female students.
During break time, girls from other classes would peek into our classroom to catch a glimpse of Souji-kun. They usually make quite a fuss about it. Despite that, Souji-kun would patiently and earnestly respond to each girl who approached him.
However, I never saw him show that gentle smile towards anyone.
Me and Souji-kun never made eye contact in the classroom.
About a week after starting the new school semester, during homeroom class, the homeroom teacher calls for candidates and recommendations for the student council members.
This is not a big surprise at all, because a few days earlier, the homeroom teacher has already told us that those who are interested in being a student council member should consult to him. However, what surprised me is that Souji-kun raised his hand and volunteered to become a candidate.
“Are you really sure about this, Souji-kun? As I said before, remembering that you are a transfer student, you might have a disadvantage in the election.”
The homeroom teacher said so to confirm Souji-kun’s decision.
It seems like Souji-kun has consulted about this before.
“Yeah, I’m sure about this. It should be fine.”
With that said, Souji-kun’s candidacy is officially decided.
However, there is still one more problem, a recommender is needed. Since Souji-kun doesn’t have any friend because he just transferred here, the teacher asked Sakazaki-kun, our class representative to become a recommender on behalf of Souji-kun. With this the issue of the recommender is solved. The whole class even support Souji-kun’s candidacy team.
That being said, there isn’t really anything much to do for the candidacy. The person who volunteered will just give a speech in front of the entire school during the school assembly, and then the voting would take place.

It is now after school.
I’m returning the materials that I borrowed from the library the other day for my club activity. Just like the other day, Souji-kun is here, completely immersed in his book.
After completing the return process at the counter, I ask Sakura-chan who came to the library with me, to go back to the club room first.
She agrees and leave the library.
Then, I take a seat in front of Souji-kun.
I knew it, seeing Souji-kun’s face directly makes him even more handsome.
“U-Umm…Souji-kun.”
“Ah, I’m sorry. I was too focused in my reading. I didn’t notice you are in front of me.”
“Ah, no, I’m sorry for interrupting you…”
“No, it’s completely fine. So, what can I do for you?”
“Umm…why did you run for the student council? As the teacher said, it might be hard for you to win since you just transferred here…”
“That’s right, it might be impossible, but since I can’t participate in club activities, I have no choice but to earn some extra grades through other things.”
“Eh? You can’t participate in club activities? Eh? What? Extra grades?”
“Yeah.”
“Why can’t you participate in club activities?”
“Club activities in middle school costs a lot of money. If I want to participate in club activities, I will need to pay for equipment, uniform, and even transportation. Since I don’t have the money for it, I can’t participate in any of the club where I can earn get extra grades. So that’s why, I will try to become a student council member.”
“……”
I’m speechless hearing Souji-kun’s words.
I’m truly at a loss for words.
I’m shocked that even though we are the same age, the way he thinks is much more mature than me.
“I’m sorry, I just told you a very embarrassing story…please forget what I just said.”
“No, not at all…”
“Oh, by the way, regarding the request that you asked me the other day, I spoke to the teacher about it and they seem to understand our situation. I think it’s probably fine now. I’m sorry, I know it’s not my place to tell you this, but I think it’s a good idea to talk to Emi-san about it just to be safe. It seems that that Emi-san doesn’t like me that much, so I think it’s probably much better for you to tell her about it, Ami-san…”
Souji-kun suddenly change the topic. He advises me to tell my little sister about it as well. I don’t even think about it that far.
“Y-Yeah, you’re right! I’ll talk to Emi when I get home today…”
“Okay.”
While responding so, Souji-kun smiles very kindly to me, just like that time.
I feel like I can stare at that smile forever.
“Sorry for interrupting your reading, and thank you for your help with it.”
“No, I’m the one who should thank you, Ami-san.”
Souji-kun says so and bows to me.
