Progress
“Hey, Souji-kun.”
“Yes, what is it?”
“I want to hear Souji-kun sing. You sang during the student council election, didn’t you? I was so impressed. I want you hear you sing again.”
“Hah…okay then. Just one song to thank you for the sandwich. Is that okay?”
“Yeah!”
I get up where I had been lying down and sit back while holding Souji-kun’s hand.
“Ahemm…”
Souji-kun clears his throat.
Then he turns his face to the sky and start to sing.
“We’re in our positions~♪ Starting all together in a straight line~♪”
As Souji-kun sings, he holds my hand and his grip tightens.
“I’ve been searching for it all along~ My ideal self~ Would be a bit cooler~♪”
During the chorus, Souji-kun’s high-pitched voice resonates beautifully in the air.
“Just one more step forward~ Let’s move on~♪”
A couple who seems to be walking by claps and applauds.
When Souji-kun finished singing, I’m speechless.
“……”
I’m obviously really impressed, but I’m also really overwhelmed that my heart is throbbing really fast. I’m at a loss for words.
“It’s kind of embarrassing.”
Souji-kun said so while turning his face opposite of my direction. It’s as if he doesn’t want me to see his face.
I…find myself with tears spilling from my eyes.
“I’ve never cried when I heard someone sing before…”
“Eh!?”
The moment Souji-kun heard my words, he turns towards me, looking surprised.
“It’s not really something to cry over, is it…?”
“No! It was amazing! I was really moved! Um, well…it was just really incredible! Ahh, I wish I can compliment you better, but I just can’t find the right words! I was really impressed during the election as well, but today’s song was even more amazing!”
“Is that so… Thank you very much.”
“No! I’m the one who should be thanking you! I’ve heard this song on TV once. Was it on NHK?”
“Yeah, that’s right. It was the theme song for an NHK TV program. It’s a song called ‘Progress’ by Suga Shikao.”
“I knew it. It’s a great song.”
“Yeah, I really like the lyrics.”
I wonder why.
It wasn’t jut that the singing was really good or that the lyrics were moving, I think it was also because I know about Souji-kun’s situation. There was something in his singing that felt like a cry from his heart, as if he was earnestly expressing his true feelings. Perhaps that’s why it moved me to tears.
I believe the song I heard from Souji-kun just now is something I won’t be able to forget. Even when I grow up in the future.
