- Chapter 17 - The Days in This World
The Days in This World
There are a few people in the lounge area. Young mothers with children, and people who seem like high school students.
I put my backpack on an empty table and sit down facing toward Souji-kun.
“Let’s rest here and cool off for a moment.”
“I’m so tired. It’s really hot today, isn’t it?”
“Yes, it is. Even though we walk to school every day, the mornings aren’t usually this hot, so today is more tiring.”
“I’m sorry, it’s because I said I wanted to go to the library.”
“Don’t worry about it. I usually don’t go anywhere and stayed in my room, so it’s refreshing to do something like this once in a while and enjoy myself.”
“…do you find it enjoyable being with me, Souji-kun?”
“Yeah, being with you is always enjoyable, Ami-san.”
“I see, I’m glad to hear that. Ehehehe.”
After resting for around 30 minutes in the lounge area, I stopped sweating and feel refreshed. However, as we are about to go inside the library, we notice that it’s about time for lunch. So, we decided to eat the onigiri I brought first.
“I usually make onigiri without any filling for our late-night snacks, but today I put some pickled plums and pickled radish. Are you okay with it, do you like pickled plums?”
“Yeah, it’s fine. I like pickled plums and pickled radish.”
“I see. I’ve made a lot. So please eat as much as you can.”
“Thank you.”
We both put our hand together and say,
““Itadakimasu””
Before we start to eat.
I made eight of them, but I’m already full after eating three of them. So, Souji-kun eats all of the rest.
“Thank you for the meal. I’m really grateful for the late-night snacks and cookies as well. Thank you, Ami-san.”
“Not at all. You’ve been helping me with my studies a lot too, Souji-kun. So please don’t worry about it.”
“Is that so? But still, thank you.”
After finishing our meal and using the restroom, we go inside the library.
“Which floor should we go? Fairy tales and children’s books are in the second floor. Modern literature and historical novels are on the third floor…”
“How about we go to the third floor? I’d like to see some historical novels.”
“I see, let’s go up to the third floor then.”
Taking the escalator up to the third floor, we find a very spacious floor with many shelves in line. The number of books here is very different from those in our middle school library.
Souji-kun said that he had been here several times and told me about his recommendations.
“I like the authors from this section. Ryotaro Shiba, whom we talked about a little the other day, and Eiji Yoshikawa.”
I pick up one of Ryotaro Shiba’s paperbacks from the shelf.
“The days in this world. What a great title.”
“I really like that one, I’ve read it multiple times.”
“Heh~”
I read the synopsis on the back cover.
“Shinsaku Takasugi, wasn’t he mentioned in our social studies class?”
“Yes, he was a samurai from the Choshu domain during the Bakumatsu period. He was involved in movements to overthrow the shogunate and campaigns of the Choshu domain. He even founded the Shinsengumi and openly challenged the Shogun at the time. He was quite an unconventional figure.”
“Hmm, it suddenly got really complicated.”
“Ah, sorry. I got carried away because it’s about a historical figure I really like. But the story itself isn’t that difficult. It’s like a tale of a hero’s adventures.”
“I see. I’ll go with this one then.”
“I’ll stay here to pick out some books a little longer. Please go ahead and take a seat first. “
Souji-kun told me so. So, as I’m told, I look a place for us to seat. There is a reading sofa available that is big enough for two people, I put my backpack down at my feet and sit down.
Once I started reading, I was so immersed that I didn’t even notice Souji-kun has come and sat down beside me.
Around an hour later.
I haven’t reached the end of volume 1 yet, but I’m really focused on reading it.
I notice Souji-kun inserts his bookmark in a page and stretches out in a sitting position.
I look over at Souji-kun and see that he is lying on the sofa, leaning against his back.
It seems that he is tired, I notice that he almost dropped the book that he is holding, so I carefully take the book from Souji-kun’s hand and put it beside me.
Yesterday, he stayed up late because I fell asleep in his room, and he even carried me to my room on the second floor. Today, we walked for almost an hour to get here. I’ve been really pushing him a lot lately.
I’ve been getting along well with Souji-kun lately, maybe I’ve gotten too carried away.
This is my first-time seeing Souji-kun’s sleeping face.
His sleeping face is truly beautiful.
I take a few minutes to thoroughly enjoy Souji-kun’s sleeping face, and then resume reading.
Taking advantage of the sleeping Souji-kun, I move to sit closer to him.
Reading right next to Souji-kun makes me feel warm and happy. It feels really soothing.
