- Chapter 16 - City Library
City Library
Souji-kun is wearing a light blue and white checkered short-sleeve shirt with shorts and sneakers. He is wearing a cap on his head and dressed similarly to me. He also has a towel wrapped around his neck and it seems that he is holding a sports drink in his hand.
“Sorry for the wait, Souji-kun.”
“It’s hot today, isn’t it? Your bags look heavy, let me carry them. Please hand them over.”
“Don’t worry about it. I can carry it myself.”
“Is that so? Well, if you’re getting tired carrying it, don’t hesitate to let me know.”
“Yeah, thanks!”
“Alright, let’s go now.”
“Yeah, let’s go.”
To get to the city library, we will need to follow the route we walk to school every day, passing the school on the way, take the City Hall Avenue to the train station, and then head north from there. It takes roughly 20 minutes to get to our school, 15 minutes from there to the station, and another 10 minutes to get from the station to the library.
“Shall we take some breaks on the way? It’s pretty hot today, so don’t forget to drink plenty of water.”
“Yeah, sure. I’m sorry, I walk quite slow. It might take us some time to get there.”
“It’s okay. Let’s just take it easy.”
“Yeah!”
I’ve gotten used to chat and spend time with Souji-kun, but walking side by side like this still makes me nervous.
“Summer break is just around the corner. Will the student council still be active during the break?”
“The advisor teacher told us to come to school for a few days, it looks like we will be making plans for the sports festival and the cultural exchange festival.”
“Heh~ Being the student council president is not easy after all.”
“Not really, it’s not like we have activities every day. By the way, do you still have literature club activities during the summer break, Ami-san?”
“We do have some activities during the summer break, but we will only meet about once or twice a week. It’s not as busy as the sports clubs.”
“I see.”
“By the way, can we work on our summer homework together?”
“Yes, of course.”
“Yatta! I always end up leaving my summer homework until the last day and then do it while crying. But this year, with you around, I feel like I can work on it more diligently.”
“Well, let’s do our best and try to finish it early.”
“Oh, speaking of which, what are your plans for the Obon holiday? You mentioned about your grandmother the other day, didn’t you? Are you planning to go visit her?”
“Obon holiday…it’s my mother’s first death anniversary, so I’m thinking of going back to her hometown. And while I’m there, I think I’ll visit my grandmother too.”
“I see…your hometown is in ‘XX’ prefecture, right? It’s quite far from here.”
(TN: The author doesn’t mention the name of the prefecture in the raws as well)
“It can’t be helped. I’m still a middle school student. So, I can’t live on my own.”
“I see…”
Since Souji-kun is still in middle school student like me, our family took him in to take care of him. I think once he graduates from high school, he will no longer live with us.
Even though we still have quite some time before Souji-kun graduates from high school, thinking about it suddenly makes me feel lonely.
After passing our school, we walk along the path to get to the train station.
She sun is shining brightly, both me and Souji-kun are heavily sweating as we walk.
As we walk, I take out the towel that I have prepared in my backpack and wrap it around my neck, just like Souji-kun.
Then, the heat gradually make us talk less and less, and we both walk in silence.
Along the way, we take some breaks in the shade.
We finally arrive at the library around 11 in the morning.
By the time we arrive at the library, both of our shirts are soaked with sweat. So, we decided to take a break and hydrate.
We head to the library’s lounge area where eating and drinking are allowed, to cool down and refresh ourselves.
