Extra 3: Maria Jinguji’s Interference
“Alright then. Sanae, the budget is set, so just go ahead and order the necessary items. Just make sure to get a receipt, and that’ll be enough.”
“Aye aye, sir. Maria-san, thanks as always.”
One day after school.
Sanae and I were having a meeting in the student council room.
By the way, the usual owner of this room, Takamiya Riara, had already left for her part-time job with her boyfriend, so she wasn’t here.
Seriously, that girl is so carefree.
“I don’t get why I have to do student council work.”
“The president and vice president had to work at the shop.”
“Shouldn’t you be there too?”
“My mother is there today. Besides, the actual student council duties are my responsibility.”
“You’re stuck with such a thankless job. You should make Riara and the others help out more.”
“The president has a duty to act as a symbol for everyone. Meanwhile, the vice president’s role is to support the president and allow her to be herself. My job of handling miscellaneous tasks is actually the easiest.”
“Hmm, is that really how it works?”
Sanae has always been the type to work behind the scenes.
Even back in kindergarten, she would willingly take on roles that everyone else avoided.
In elementary school, she handled cleaning duties alone when it was assigned to an unpopular spot.
“Hey, Sanae, you should live a little more freely. If you push yourself too hard, you’ll end up like Mika Shinozaki and burn out.”
“Mika-san is a special case. Besides, I enjoy this. Seeing others become happy because of my actions makes me happy too. It’s a wonderful win-win situation.”
“You’re really weird, you know that?”
“Yes, I’m aware. But if anything, Maria-san, you’re just as much of a weirdo for sticking with someone like me.”
“…That’s just because we’ve been childhood friends for so long. Anyway, I need to finish up the proposal.”
“I’ll take care of the rest from here, so you can head home first.”
“Don’t be stupid. I’ve already done this much, so I’m finishing it with you. I won’t let you take all the credit. Besides, it’d be lonely if you didn’t walk home with me.”
“Oh my, that was quite the sweet line. Thank you for the treat.”
“…Just hurry up and get to work.”
By the time Sanae and I finished putting together the proposal, the sun had completely set.
Since it was late, someone came to pick us up, and we left the school together in a car.
On the way, Sanae spoke thoughtfully.
“Hmm, at this rate, next year might be an interesting match.”
“What are you talking about?”
“The student council president election. Maria-san, you want to become president, don’t you?”
“…What, are you planning to betray them?”
“Of course not. I will support the president no matter what. But at the same time, I want to be Maria-san’s greatest ally for life. Next year, due to my position, I might end up standing against you, but that’s just how it is.”
“Hmph, who knows what’ll happen next year. But if Riara keeps slacking off, I might just run against her and crush her.”
“If that happens, I’ll be cheering for you in my heart. Wishing you the best, Maria-san.”
“…Same to you.”
No matter how self-centered she is, Sanae always considers me.
Our relationship will probably stay like this forever.
Thinking about that makes my past obsession with romance feel ridiculous.
Love is an important source of energy, but so is friendship.
After all, it’s an irreplaceable page in my youth.

Extra 4: Is Enjouji Itsuki in Love?
“…Where’s Shinozaki-san?”
After school.
Lately, I always find myself looking for Shinozaki-san.
She’s been nothing but a nuisance in my love life, always acting so high and mighty, and yet, I can’t stop thinking about her.
Whenever I see her, my heart races. Whenever I try to talk to her, I get all awkward.
Hearing her voice makes my heart pound, and when she’s not around, I feel restless.
What is this feeling?
It’s not like I like girls.
I still love Kagami-kun, and I’m definitely interested in guys.
I just want to know what this feeling is called.
And the only one who can tell me is Shinozaki-san.
That’s why I waited for her at the school gate.
After a while, she finally shows up.
“Shinozaki-saan!”
“Ugh… What do you want today?”
“You don’t have to look that disgusted. I just want to talk.”
“I don’t really have anything to talk about, and I need to get home.”
“You’re so mean. But you can talk while walking, right?”
“…Only while walking.”
She’s been avoiding me a lot lately, so it’s been a while since I’ve had the chance to talk to her.
Feeling a little excited, I asked,
“Hey, do you think it’s weird for a girl to like another girl?”
“Not really, it’s pretty common these days. I mean, it’s not my world, but still.”
“I love Kagami-kun. But I can’t stop thinking about you too. Is that weird?”
“Some people like both. But liking two people at the same time? That’s just being unfaithful. I hate people like that—my parents got divorced because of an affair.”
She cut straight to the point.
And that honesty made my heart skip again.
“…Kagami-kun is the only one I’m in love with. So, this feeling I have for you… it must be something else.”
“Who knows? By the way, Enjou-san, do you have any other friends?”
“Not really. Back in middle school, I only really talked to Kagami-kun.”
“You seem social, but that’s surprising.”
“Well, a lot happened. I got unwanted attention from some creepy guys, and the girls I tried to rely on ended up betraying me. I guess I just don’t trust people.”
“Huh. I guess everyone’s got their issues. But in that case, your feelings for me probably aren’t love, so you can relax.”
She said it like she saw right through me.
I quickly asked back,
“Then what is it?”
“It’s probably just that your idea of ‘liking’ someone hasn’t been separated into different categories yet.”
“Wh-what do you mean?”
“Like, the difference between liking and loving. You can’t tell if it’s love, admiration, or respect yet. Who knows, maybe what you feel for Suzukaze-kun isn’t even love but more like gratitude or something else.”
“…So there are different kinds of ‘liking’ someone?”
“Exactly. I love Riara to death, but that’s not romantic love. Riara loves me too, but the only person she’s in love with is Suzukaze-kun. People’s hearts are full of all kinds of love.”
Then, as if it was nothing, she added,
“Well, I only realized this recently myself.”
And she smiled.
“I see. So maybe my feelings for you aren’t love… or maybe they are.”
“I’d rather not be on the receiving end of that, thanks. I wouldn’t be able to return the feelings anyway.”
“Hey, that’s kinda mean.”
“No way. If I ever liked a girl, it’d only be Riara. Anyway, you should try liking different people too. Eventually, you’ll figure out what real love is. Oh, that’s something I picked up from Riara. It’s funny how someone who used to hate guys ended up saying something like that.”
Hearing that, I wondered if I’d ever reach that kind of understanding myself.
Before I knew it, we had reached Shinozaki-san’s house.
“Alright, we’re here. Don’t be too clingy, okay?”
“…Hey.”
“Huh?”
“Can I… come over sometime? You know, as a friend?”
“…I’ll think about it.”
She sighed as she said that and headed inside.
This is just the beginning.
I want to talk to her more.
I want to understand what my feelings for her really are.
If she acts cold toward me, it’s only what I deserve.
After all, I’ve treated people the same way.
I even did it to Kagami-kun.
So I have no right to blame anyone for it.
This won’t make me give up.
“Alright, I need to try harder.”
