Chapter 17: The Arrival of Sideboob!!!!!!
“You’re saying you’d kill me…!?”
“If I hated you enough, wouldn’t that make it okay?”
The usually timid Michitaka Soranaki—
The same man whose timid nature made him resonate with the [Dove] Conceptual Spirit.
The man destined to die from being pushed into a sacrificial role due to his weakness—
That man was now furious.
“In this moment, I don’t like you at all. If just one more person agrees, then I’d have justification to act.”
Countless [Dove] feathers fluttered from Dad’s sleeve.
The feathers gathered in his right hand, forming a massive blade resembling a wing.
“Hieee! A-A practicing Reisoushi doing something like this is a crime!”
“The criminal here is you.”
“?!”
Dad’s eyes were icy cold, with no trace of hesitation.
“…Let me guess—you don’t even have a Reisoushi qualification, do you? Using techniques without a license is a clear violation of the law.”
“Ugh…!”
“If I report you, you’ll be officially labeled as a ‘Medium.'”
“No way!?”
Medium—a term for those who use Spirit Conduction illegally.
Once caught, the punishment is almost always the death penalty.
At best, you’d face life imprisonment. The alternative? Being conscripted into Ouma Shiranui’s personal penance slave corps, the Yatagarasu, where you’d be worked to death.
As long as Commander Ouma reigns over Japan’s Spirit Conduction world, mercy is nonexistent—even for someone from a prestigious family.
“No way… being labeled as a Medium… if that happens…!”
“You won’t be executed since you’re a minor. But without a doubt, the Kirisame family’s reputation would be tarnished.”
“T-That can’t beeeeeee…!”
Sharo collapsed to the ground, utterly defeated.
Wow… just wow. When Dad’s timid side fades away, he’s terrifying.
Now that I think about it, he’s a veteran Reisoushi who’s been through countless deadly battles.
If his weakness disappears, of course, what comes out from within would be nothing but sharpness.
Meeting me in this second life… might have turned him into a completely different person.
“Kanata.”
“(!?)”
Being called out, I flinched internally.
Outwardly, my “cool and expressionless” Body stayed composed, but my soul was pounding.
Is he going to scold me too…?
Just as I was bracing myself—
“You’ve done well, Kanata.”
“Huh?”
Out of nowhere, he patted my head.
“In the end, you didn’t hurt her even once. Despite her coming here to kill you.”
“Well, I guess…”
“And you followed my advice, ‘use respectful language with your elders,’ even with someone like her. Kanata, you’re a good child. And the way you came up with unexpected uses for the spirits—I’m proud to call you my son.”
…He hugged me, gently rubbing my back.
I looked up at Dad. His eyes as he embraced me were incredibly kind.
But—
“—Now then, Miss Sharo Kirisame.”
The moment Dad turned to face her, his tone turned cold again.
Sharo let out a small whimper, “Hyuuh!” The shift in demeanor could probably give someone a fever…!
“W-What is it…!?”
“I happen to be acquainted with your sister, Miss Setsuna Kirisame.”
“!?”
“She’s someone who, despite her cold demeanor, is kind at heart. Talented, too. I have no doubt she’ll lead a brilliant life as the Commander’s deputy. That’s why… I really didn’t want to tarnish her family’s name.”
Dad, with a slight smirk of revenge, pulled out his phone. Without hesitation, he pressed three buttons.
—Yep, it was a call to the authorities. Thank you very much.
“Noooo, anything but thatttttt!” Sharo wailed, tears streaming down her face.
“Now, all that’s left is to press the call button. Once I do, you’ll officially be a criminal…”
“P-P-P…”
“P?”
“Please forgive me! I was wrong!”
With a deep bow, Sharo practically planted her forehead to the ground.
Dad watched her for a few seconds, then let out a long sigh.
“…Well then, Kanata. What do you think? You’re the one she troubled, so I’ll leave the decision to you.”
Dad handed the judgment over to me.
“Hmm… (What should I do about Sharo Kirisame?)”
A girl who, in her desperation, tried to kill me because she’s a struggling student.
To put it simply, she’s someone who only thinks about her own advancement. Not exactly someone I’d like.
But—
“Today, I’ve decided to forgive you, Miss Sharo.”
“Huh!?”
I chose not to hold her actions against her.
Because deep down, I’m just an ordinary, unremarkable guy. I understand those feelings—of anxiety, of being cornered.
“Are you sure, Kanata?”
“Yes.”
I nodded toward my father, Michitaka.
…After his death, the Soranaki family will experience significant growth.
My older sister and brother are geniuses, incredibly attractive, and will become highly celebrated Reisoushis, even appearing on television. They’re stars—the protagonists.
In contrast, I was painfully average.
The constant pressure of expectations and my repeated failures to meet them was agonizing.
It took me a long time to accept that, compared to those “protagonists,” I was just a supporting character, a “mob.” I felt that desperation once too.
That’s why—
“Miss Sharo, we were engaging in a mock battle today, with my father’s permission.”
“E-Eh?”
“In that case, no laws were broken. And your family’s name won’t be tarnished either, will it?”
“…!”
I extended my hand to her.
I have my own thoughts about this whole situation, but Dad already gave her quite the scare.
For today, that’s enough.
“U-Um…!”
“Yes?”
“I… um…!”
Hesitantly, Sharo took my hand. Then—
“I’m sorry… for what I did…!”
Her voice trembled, tears in her eyes, clearly unused to apologizing.
Her way of speaking is still weird, though.
◆ ◇ ◆
“I was so scared… so, so scared…!”
“There, there.”
I gently consoled Sharo, who was sobbing uncontrollably. It must have really shaken her up.
“Since we have the chance, how about training together for your exam next week?”
“Huh?”
I decided to invite her to train with me.
If things stay as they are, she’ll probably fail the exam.
And if that leads her to recklessly charge at the high-level Conceptual Spirit [Erasure] again and meet that horrible fate, I wouldn’t be able to stomach it.
“I’m still in training myself, but I might be able to teach you a few things. And helping you will also help me grow.”
Watching and assisting someone inexperienced is a great way to reflect on your own weaknesses.
“D-Do you really mean that? Even though I… I tried to kill you, Kanata…”
“Yes, I don’t mind at all.”
“K-Kanata, you’re so kind…!”
Sharo looked deeply moved. Well, I suppose forgiving someone who tried to kill you might make you seem magnanimous.
…But that’s a bit of a misunderstanding.
With my current high-spec body, the danger she posed was about as threatening as a kitten playing around.
Even if I’d been hit by her water bullets or stabbed by her kunai, my spiritually enhanced muscle fibers would’ve easily prevented any fatal damage.
So being overly thanked for this feels… a bit awkward.
“You even protected me from becoming a criminal…! Kanata, you’re really an angel!”
Uh… sure.
Having been pushed to her limit and then shown kindness, she was now looking at me with bright, sparkling eyes.
“Kanata, Kanata…♡”
Well… I guess being liked isn’t a bad thing.
“Oh, and I’d be delighted to train with you!”
“That’s good to hear. I thought this might be a perfect opportunity for you as well.”
Sharo actually performed better than I expected. Her spiritual energy reserves and physical abilities weren’t bad.
But the later parts of the qualification exam… that’s where she’d likely struggle.
“The Spirit Conduction Skills Exam involves mock battles with other examinees. Having someone to practice with in a competitive setting will help prepare you.”
It’s not like the simpler tests for spiritual energy levels or physical measurements.
For this exam, you must demonstrate your techniques in actual combat against other candidates.
“I-I’d prefer to take my time building my techniques…”
“You won’t have that luxury in combat. The exam will assess not just the precision of your techniques but also the speed and your ability to perform under pressure.”
For the record, losing a mock battle doesn’t automatically mean failure.
Even if you’re defeated, as long as you demonstrate sufficient skill before going down, you can still pass.
However—
“Winning leaves a better impression on the examiners. Your opponents will be giving it their all, and because of that, there are fatalities every year.”
“Hieu…!”
It’s a tough test.
But think about it—sending an unprepared Reisoushi into battle against a Conceptual Spirit is a death sentence.
If their spiritual energy gets consumed, the enemy spirits could evolve, just like [Doll] and others.
This kind of ruthless elimination process is necessary to prevent such risks.
With that in mind—
“Miss Sharo, you’re welcome to come at me with the intent to kill.”
“Whaaaaat!?”
Sharo jumped in shock, her movements almost comical.
She’s clumsy, but her reactions are kind of adorable.
“W-What are you saying, Kanata!? If I tried something like that…!”
Her gaze flicked nervously toward my father, Michitaka.
He responded with a gentle smile, causing Sharo to let out a soft “Eek!” and flinch.
Yep, she’s completely terrified of Dad now.
“It’s fine. As Father said, the difference in our abilities is clear. Honestly, unless you come at me full force, it won’t be much of a challenge.”
“Wow… Kanata, you’re really composed…!”
Well, I’ve lived two lifetimes as a Reisoushi.
After completing so many missions, even a scaredy-cat like me grows a thicker skin.
“Fine! I’ll come at you with everything I’ve got…! Oh, but first, I need to call big sister Setsuna!”
“Good idea. It’d be best to clear up the misunderstanding.”
“Yes! Kanata, you’re an angel!”
“I’m not an angel.”
Sharo tapped away at her phone, ready to make the call.
But then—
“Shaaaaaaaaaaarooooo!“
A booming voice echoed from above.
Looking up, I saw a blue-haired woman in a loose kimono—Setsuna Kirisame—descending rapidly.
Her eyes were wide and intense as she snowboarded down on a sheet of ice from the sky.
Okay, this is… unsettling.
“Shaaaaaaaaaaaaaroooooo!“
“Big Sister!?”
The moment she landed, Setsuna grabbed Sharo and pulled her away, putting some distance between us.
Then she glared at me.
Terrifying.
“Kanata Soranaki! So you’ve finally revealed your true nature!?”
“Uh, Miss Setsuna, wait—”
“Shaaaaaaaaaaーーーーーー!“
“…So loud.”
Oh no, this isn’t good. She’s completely lost it.
This woman, who’s supposed to be famous for being a cool beauty in the future, turns into this when it involves her little sister?
Even Dad looked confused. “Was she always like this…?“
“From the moment I saw your wicked smile, I knew you were a hopeless villain! I figured it was only a matter of time before you went berserk, but to think you’d sink your fangs into my dear Sharo…!”
I didn’t do anything of the sort.
I was about to explain myself when Sharo suddenly shouted, “That’s not true!”
“Eh? S-Sharo?”
“It’s true Kanata looks really good, and his eyes are lifeless, he’s completely expressionless, and when he does smile, it’s this creepy dark grin. He gives off a total aura of darkness.”
I don’t, though.
“But he’s actually really kind…!”
Oh… oh! Sharo’s defending me!?
Good, good. Keep going and clear up my reputation.
“Wait, Sharo! He didn’t treat you roughly or anything, did he?”
“Well… a little, but… but still!”
Sharo glanced at me briefly, her cheeks flushing red.
“He didn’t hurt me… and he was so kind to me…♡”
“Sharo!?”
Whoa, Sharo, phrasing!
“I’m the only one who truly believes in Kanata…♡”
Sharo twisted shyly as she said this.
Seeing her act like that, Setsuna’s eyes rolled back, and she froze like a statue… and then—
“My beloved little sister has been… de…”
De…?
“DECEIVED BY AN ABUSIVE BOYFRIEND AND BRAINWASHED!!!!”
Who are you calling an abusive boyfriend!?

[Tips]
Penance Slave Corps “Yatagarasu”:
A group of those labeled as Medium and subsequently captured.
Formed by Ouma Shiranui, this special unit consists of individuals who have had all human rights stripped away.
Explosives are implanted throughout their bodies, rendering any rebellion impossible.
They are forced to undertake perilous missions until their deaths, all in the name of protecting Japan.
Sharo’s Ending No. 1: No One Left to Wish ‘Live’ for Her:
Sharo’s Bad Ending (One of Many):
Occurs if Michitaka Soranaki and Maro fail to connect sufficiently.
Without enough confidence, Michitaka cannot properly scold Sharo, leaving her arrogance unchecked. This leads her to charge recklessly at the high-level Conceptual Spirit [Erasure], just like in the previous life, and die again.
Kanata Soranaki, still harboring resentment towards her, refuses to get involved further, ensuring no one saves her this time.
Condition to Avoid:
At night, Michitaka must initiate a conversation with Maro.
Michitaka should ask, “How can I become a better father?”
Maro will dismissively reply, “I don’t know, I’m going to sleep.”
This seemingly unhelpful exchange triggers a realization in Michitaka:
“I see! I’m Kanata’s only father! Asking others for guidance is not the way to go, right, Mr. Maro!?”
This self-motivated epiphany leads to his personal growth.
Setsuna Kirisame:
The cool older sister who appears now and then. Eighteen years old. Known for her loose kimono and sideboob.
She adores her spoiled little sister. Loves her so much she spoils her with allowances whenever asked.
Has an odd habit of licking her sister’s ears.
Her world shattered when her beloved sister was “stolen” by Kanata Soranaki.
“HE’S PURE EVIL!!!”
Kanata Soranaki:
← Dark, abusive boyfriend!!! (according to Setsuna)
← That’s not true! (according to Kanata)
