Chapter 3.1 – The Evil Dragon Goes to Town With Her Son
That night, a banquet was held to celebrate Ryuuji’s coming of age.
Though the only attendees were Ryuuji and his mother, Karma.
Partway through, the Observer came by with a birthday gift, but Karma drove her off, yelling, “Outsiders, stay out of it!”
“‘Outsider,’ how cruel. Well, you’re not wrong. This onee-san will take her leave.”
“Get lost, long-ears. Tonight is a celebration for just the two of us.”
“So mean, Karma. I get it, I get it. See you later, kiddo. We’ll meet again.”
After the Observer left, Karma beamed. “Now, let’s continue the birthday party!”
The meal, which served as a coming-of-age ceremony, birthday party, and a celebration of his recovery, was unbelievably extravagant.
It was far too much for one person to eat. It would’ve been nice if the Observer had stayed to eat with us.
“This is a meal prepared just for Ryu-kun. That means Ryu-kun has to eat all of it!”
And so, Ryuuji struggled his way through every last dish.
After finishing the meal, he took a breath.
“Mommy will clear the dishes now,” Karma said, before using her 【All-Destruction】 skill to annihilate the empty plates.
For Karma, to whom creation and destruction came easily, dishes were disposable. After all, she could just make more.
“Hee hee, and now, it’s time for the cake. Ta-da!”
Karma, her face alight with glee, brought out a cake so massive it could rival a wedding cake.
Ryuuji, his expression strained, still managed to eat every last bite.
…It’s not that Ryuuji hated his mother or anything.
He just hated the overprotective parts, or to be blunt, the annoying parts. He didn’t despise her as a person.
His mother was celebrating the fact that he was born, that he’d come of age, from the bottom of her heart.
And that made Ryuuji happy.
…Though, he really wished she’d stop with the over-the-top celebrations.
He finished the cake and took a breath.
Ryuuji steeled his resolve. It’s time.
In a corner of the cave they called home.
Sitting across the table from his mother, Ryuuji spoke.
“Mom, there’s something important I need to talk about.”
“Hrm, I’m listening.”
Ryuuji straightened his posture and faced his mother.
“Mom… I want to leave home.”
This was Ryuuji’s big decision.
He’d been meaning to say it for a while: once he came of age, he would leave this home.
…But it took a lot of courage to actually say it.
After all, this was a mom who was completely crazy about her son. If he said he was leaving, she would surely throw a massive fit.
However…
“Hrm. I see. I understand.”
Contrary to his expectations, his mother’s reaction was lukewarm.
“Y-you understand?”
“Yes. That’s right, I was also thinking it was about time we moved. Instead of a dark cave like this, maybe we could build a house somewhere else, on a grassy plain, for example. That might be nice.”
“…Huh? H-huh?”
He and his mother were on completely different wavelengths.
“Um… Mom. What are you talking about?”
“What do you mean? About moving. You don’t like it here, so let’s leave and move to a different place.”
Karma tilted her head with a genuinely puzzled look.
(This woman… she has no idea what I’m trying to say!)
It seemed his mother had simply interpreted his words as a request to move house.
“No! That’s not it.”
“Then what is it?”
(…At this point, I’ll just say it and not worry about the consequences.) Ryuuji spoke, his voice clear and firm.
“I want to leave this house and live by myself in town. Away from you, Mom. On my own.”
Timidly, Ryuuji glanced at his mother.
She was wearing a gentle smile.
(Yes… Is she going to let me…?)
That faint hope, however, was immediately shattered.
“…”
“Mom?”
“…”
…She’s not responding when I talk to her.
Thinking something was off, he stood up and gave his mother’s shoulder a light tap.
poke
And then…
THUD!!
She fell flat on her back.
She passed out… with her eyes open?!
S-so it was that much of a shock…
The thought made him feel guilty. Sorry, Mom, I didn’t mean to hurt you… But no, Ryuuji hardened his heart. If I go easy on her now, I’ll never be able to leave.
“Mom, I—”
“AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!”
WHOOSH!
Karma shot to her feet and screamed.
“AHHH! AHHH! I can’t hear anything! I caaaan’t hear a thiiing!”
(This woman… she’s escaping from reality!)
“Mom! I’m telling you, I want to live alone—”
“AHHHHHHHHHHH! Can’t hear you! Well, it’s about time for bed! Come on, let’s have our goodnight hug and sleep together, hurry up, come on, hurry!”
Apparently, his mother intended to pretend this conversation never happened and sweep it under the rug.
“Mom! Will you please listen to me!”
“NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!”
Then, Karma shouted, “Transform!”
POOF!
With a puff of smoke, Karma, who had been in human form, reverted to her evil dragon form.
A dragon so massive you had to crane your neck to see it all.
A dark aura leaked from her body.
A wicked appearance that made you tremble just from looking at it. A majesty befitting the name “Evil Dragon.”
In her dragon state, Karma declared to her son:
“If you wish to leave this home, you will have to defeat your mother first!!!”
“Don’t ask the impossible!!”
After all, this evil dragon held the title of God Slayer, making her Level 999—the max level.
There was no way Ryuuji, who possessed only average strength, could ever win.
…Then again, no one in this world could beat his mom.
“If it’s impossible, then give up. You are to stay by my side forever! And that’s final!”
“No! I’m leaving! I’m leaving this place and becoming an adventurer!”
“Then you must defeat me! If you truly wish to leave, you will have to step over your mother’s dead body!”
“I don’t have that kind of resolveeeee!!!!”
…In the end, they went back and forth with “I’m leaving!” and “No!” until dawn broke.

The next day.
Ryuuji… had made it to town. “So this is the town of Kamiina…!”
What awaited Ryuuji after he passed through the gates was a sea of people and a forest of buildings.
This was Kamiina, a town located slightly south of the country’s center.
Ryuuji had lived with his mother at the foot of the Sky Dragon Mountain Range, in the southern part of this country.
The town of Kamiina was located several kilometers from there.
Compared to the royal capital of Shea or the main capital, Masumoto, it had fewer goods and people, but it was still classified as a major regional city.
Merchants in horse-drawn carriages. A group that looked like adventurers. Children running around and laughing.
Every single thing was new and fresh to Ryuuji.
“My new life starts here!”
His spirits soared. He was lost in thought about his new life… when it happened.
“That’s not right, Ryu-kun. It should be, our new life, shouldn’t it?”
…His soaring mood came crashing down. Ryuuji glanced to his side.
Standing there was… the tall, long-haired beauty, his mother, Karma.
“Mom…”
As for why Karma was here, that began a few hours earlier.
On the day Ryuuji declared he was leaving, Karma was absolutely determined not to let her son go outside.
No matter how much he explained, his mother stubbornly refused to nod her head.
So… though he felt bad about it, Ryuuji decided to use his trump card.
“If you don’t let me leave home, I’m going to start hating you!”
(…It was a move he didn’t want to use. Because it was a lie. There was no way he could ever hate Karma.)
Besides, Ryuuji knew that hearing this would make Karma incredibly depressed.
So he really didn’t want to use this card, but if he didn’t, he felt like he’d be stuck living in that cave for the rest of his life.
Now, upon being told she’d be hated, Karma cried her eyes out, and after a great deal of reluctance…
“I understand…”
And so, it was decided that Ryuuji would leave home.
But on the morning of his departure, as Ryuuji finished getting ready, he found his mother waiting for him—also dressed to go out.
“Mother will be coming with you.”
“Huh?!”
His mother continued.
“As I thought, I cannot let Ryu-kun go out into the world alone. The outside is filled with too much danger. Besides, if your mother is with you, you’ll be perfectly safe and sound. Because I can eliminate any and all enemies in a split second.”
Hmph, she said smugly.
“Hey… were you even listening?! I said I wanted to live alone!”
To which Karma replied in a calm tone, “But are you sure about that?”
“If you live alone, do you even have any money?”
“Ugh…”
