Chapter 214: The Day Before the Sports Festival
The sports festival prep was settled, and time flew by.
We practiced for the relay and walked around in cavalry battle formation—everything’s ready.
It’s not just us who are prepared.
When I got home and told them I’d be in various events, Mom, Hirana, and Nagi-san—
“Oh! I’m taking a day off to watch!”
“Aki-san, Aki-san, let’s buy a camera! We gotta capture Yuki-kun’s heroic moments!”
“I want to cheer for Yuki-kun too, but I don’t have vacation days… Aki-san, Hirana, I’m counting on you for photos!”
“You got it!”
“Photos won’t cut it—let’s get a video camera!”
They even went shopping for a video camera on their day off.
Getting filmed by a video camera’s kinda nerve-wracking…
If I mess up, it’ll be recorded forever.
And so, the day before the sports festival.
After homeroom, we leave our bags in the classroom and head to the field.
By “we,” I mean me, Shigure, Sakura, Airi, and… since we needed more hands, I asked Sanbi, Alice, and Kyoka, who eagerly agreed to help.
“If it’s Yuki-sama’s request, I’ll follow you through fire, water, or dirt!”
“I’m not great at physical stuff, but for my companion’s sake, I’ll help out.”
“Nothing could make me happier than assisting Goshujin-sama!”
We walk past the field to the equipment room in the back.
“Yuki-kun!”
“You’re here, Yuki.”
There’s Sarina, the student council president, with student council members, Shino, and about ten other students.
“Sorry we’re late.”
“No, no, everyone’s just gathered, so you’re fine.”
“Are the non-council people volunteers?”
“Yup, when they heard you were helping, Yuki-kun, our class got a ton of volunteers!”
“Nice to meet you, Oyodo-kun, I’m—‘Hey, no cutting in! I was gonna—’ I’m trying to introduce myself first!”
“Sorry, Oyodo-kun, I’m—‘‘No way!’’”
For some reason, the girls trying to introduce themselves to me start bickering loudly.
It’s getting noisy—
“Hey, hey! We’re here to prep for the sports festival, so if you’re just gonna make noise, go home! Don’t wanna hang with Yuki-kun?”
Sarina shouts, and the place goes quiet, everyone turning to her.
“Alright, let’s start prepping. First—”
Work-mode Sarina briskly gives instructions to the group.
The students start carrying equipment from the room.
Shigure, Sakura, Sanbi, and Kyoka grab sports festival gear and head out.
Left behind are me, Airi, Alice, Sarina, and Shino.
“Yuki-kun, take these!”
Sarina points to some white cloth.
“This cloth? Where’s it going?”
“To the school side of the field. It’s the tent canopy.”
Oh, got it, tent fabric.
“Alice, it’s light, so can you handle it? I’ll take the poles.”
“Oh, as expected of my companion. So considerate. I’ll carry this mystical veil.”
I pick up a few folded tent poles.
“Yukki, you okay carrying all that?”
“Don’t overdo it, Yuki.”
Airi and Shino, worried about the load, call out.
“This much is fine. Let’s get this done quick.”
I start walking.
Airi and Shino follow, carrying poles.
Behind them, Alice has the cloth, and Sarina carries a basket with base plates for the poles.
We start setting up at Sarina’s designated spot, but Shino speaks up.
“You’re in several events, right, Yuki? All practiced up?”
“Did the basics! For me, the relay’s just taking the baton as anchor, and cavalry’s about formation.”
Ball toss is just throwing balls, and the scavenger hunt is just grabbing stuff and running, so no practice needed.
“Cavalry battle’s okay? It gets pretty intense.”
“It’s just a cavalry battle, right? I’m kinda fit, so I’ll be fine.”
“Hope so…”
“What about you, Shino?”
“I’m in two-legged race, relay, tug-of-war, and cavalry battle.”
“You’re in cavalry too?”
“Yes, though I’m a rider.”
“Speaking of, how do the teams work?”
“This year, first-years A and B classes are Red Team, C to E are White. Second-years are opposite: A and B are White, C to E are Red. Third-years are like first-years.”
“So White has more people.”
“They balance it by forming a cheer squad from White to hype up the festival. They cheer for both teams.”
“Got it.”
“Hehe, the cheer squad’s pretty wild, so look forward to it.”
“Will do!”
