- Chapter 21: Friday, When Words Dance.
Friday, When Words Dance.
Friday.
The opposite side of the ticket gate from the school
It has been less than a month since I stopped coming here, yet I feel nostalgic.
I left early, but Ayaka was already there.
“Umi-kun…”
“…Good morning, Ayaka.”
“Good morning… Um-kun… I have a lot to apologize to you for…”
“Yes, I understand. I’ll listen. Let’s go there?”
Sitting on a bench in a flowerbed-like area just outside the ticket gate, Ayaka started to talk.
“First of all… I’m sorry for always standing at your door for you every morning… I understand that we can’t talk anymore at school, but I really didn’t want to cut the connection with you, Umi-kun.”
“Well… I accept that apology of yours.”
I couldn’t tell her too… Please don’t trouble yourself by coming here every day…
“Thank you… and I’m sorry… I lied… and tried to hide it when you asked me what I was doing on Saturday… the day we broke up…”
“…I can’t look over the fact you lied… but I understand that you tried to hide it on the spur of the moment… You knew you were guilty of something, didn’t you?”
“Yes, I’m really sorry… and I’m sorry for being alone with someone other than you… Umi-kun… and I’m sorry for holding hands with him… and I’m sorry for kissing him… and I didn’t understand… Umi-kun… I’m really stupid for doing this… and I’m sorry for how I made him feel… and I’m sorry…”
“I’m not saying that you are only for me Ayaka or that I have control over you. But you know, you know what?! One shouldn’t cross the line…”
No! I’m not trying to criticize Ayaka.
I almost shouted at her, but I forced myself to stop.
I knew that. That Ayaka has a character that she can’t leave someone in trouble.
That Ayaka is the type of person who would reach out to help anyone within her reach.
I exhaled deeply to calm down.
“…If I had only relied on you more, you and I would had trusted each other more… and… this would not have happened…”
When I saw the clock in front of the station, it was almost time to leave for school.
“…I’m sorry, Ayaka. I know it’s a little late, but I want to talk to you about something… I’m going to call you after the test, so please wait for me. And I can’t give you an answer right now regarding the apology you gave you earlier…”
“…Okay. I’ll wait… for your call.”
I stood up.
“Also, do your best and don’t lose your score on the test because of this. I’ll be my fault if you did. See you later.”
With that, I headed back to school.
I can’t really recall what I have studied for the test…
…Though, I was the one who told Ayaka not to fail the test.
Talking with Ayaka, my head is all jumbled up and I don’t know how I feel.
Even so, I managed to face Ayaka.
I think it’s thanks to Marin that I didn’t break down… and…
And kept me from going into depression…
At noon, I received a message from Amemiya.
Hibari: Are you going to the rooftop today too?
Umi: Daichi isn’t here, but do you want to join?
Hibari: I’m coming!
While waiting for Amemiya, I rest my arm on the rooftop railing and look up at the sky.
The sun was shining through the clouds, and when I looked out onto the schoolyard, I saw that there were a few people playing soccer.
A warm breeze, mixed with humidity, seemed to tell me that summer would soon be here.
“Umi-senpai! Sorry to keep you waiting!”
Then came a junior of mine, shining like a summer day.
“Ahh-, I haven’t been waiting that long.”
Chatting with Amemiya while having lunch on the rooftop.
“Soon as the tests are over, it’ll be summer vacation, right?”
“Yep-“
“What are you going to do during summer vacation, Umi-senpai?”
“Well, maybe part-time job.”
“Ehh? You do part-time job?”
“No, I’m looking for one.”
“I see… then why don’t we work at the same place?”
“There’s no problem, but do you have a part-time job you want to do?”
“Hmm… well… part time job… part time job… uniform…”
Amamiya closed her eyes and ran her index finger between her eyebrows.
“Ah! How about a maid cafe? Wouldn’t you like to see your cute junior dressed as a maid?”
“It’s not something I can do too…”
“Ha! That’s right! I was just thinking about the cute uniforms.”
Amemiya started worrying again, Hmmm….
Good Grief… this girl…
I had been thinking about a lot of things since this morning, but now It’s all nice now.
Then I suddenly remembered Daichi’s words.
“You have a nice face.”
Maybe it’s all thanks to Amemiya.
“Hey, my junior Amemiya.”
“Yes, what is it?”
“Thanks.”
Amemiya’s eyes widened in surprise.
“Ehh? What’s wrong?”
“The reason I’m able to smile now and not depressed is because of you, Amemiya.”
And then…
A tear fell down from Amemiya’s eye and she sat down on her knees.
“Ehh?? Y-you okay?!”
I was frustrated, but Amemiya just started talking.
“…Please… don’t look… at my face…”
“…I wanted you to… smile… Umi-senpai.”
“…Even if I can’t make you smile… I don’t want you to look sad…”
“And then of course… If you thank me… then of course I will cry…”
“…Please… wait… a moment…”
Amemiya took one deep breath and stood up vigorously, her eyes red but with a big smile on her face.
“Let’s look for a part-time job together!”
With that, she ran off.
When I saw Amemiya’s smile as she left, I froze for a while and was almost late for my afternoon class.
