- Chapter 16: The Man I Respect.
The Man I Respect.
Chisaki Daichi’s POV
On the day of the ball game.
I got matched up with Umi’s class from the very first game.
But when I saw Umi with a basketball, I was so happy that I almost cried.
Winter of the second year of middle school.
After the third year students graduated, Umi stubbornly refused to be the head of the team, so a new team was formed with me as the head of the team.
With the slogan ” Let’s win the All-Championships again next summer, let’s go!” And just as we were getting started, Umi suddenly quit the club.
I wouldn’t go so far as to call him a one-man army.
But Umi was on a different level.
I would say that he was a number one high school player mixed in amongst the middle school students who were quite good.
In fact, even now that I’m in my second year of high school, I don’t know of any player who can surpass the player Umi was in that second year of junior high school.
After Umi left, we were in shambles.
I think the biggest thing was that we lost a practice game to a middle school that we were never supposed to lose to before, and the motivation of the club members went down.
The frustration of the club members was all directed at Umi.
They called him a traitor.
Why did Umi leave the club?
Umi explained the situation to me and me alone, with a promise not to tell anyone about it.
I couldn’t tell the other club members that he was leaving the club because he had to take care of my mother and my sister.
Umi gave everything he had for his family for a year until his mother got better.
He took time off to take care of his mother, who had a mental breakdown.
Sacrificing himself so that his younger sister, still in elementary school, would not be deprived of anything.
Even so, He never gave a bad look, just smiled and said, “Because we are family.”
He took care of all the housework, including cooking, laundry, cleaning and dusting, and even the application process for his younger sister who was about to enter middle school.
How could he possibly be involved in club activities in such a situation?
And he’s a traitor?
Didn’t you see how much fun he was having playing basketball?
Some of the club members seemed to have guessed that there was some complication because of the change of his last name, but it was too late for that, and in the end, Umi never reconciled with the rest of the basketball club members except for me.
It must have been hard for Umi himself, he must have been in pain.
Yet, he did not want to cause his mother any hardship, so he worked hard to get into the top public high school in the district, even cutting down on his sleep and studying, despite the difficulties he was going through with school, his mother, and his younger sister.
I knew I was no match for him.
I respect Umi from the bottom of my heart.
“That look on his face, as if he’s enjoying himself to the fullest, that guy’s for real… crazy.”
Shingo, a member of the same basketball team in my class, asked me,
“Is he a good basketball player?”
Shingo is a candidate to be a regular when the third years graduates, so this is a good opportunity for him.
I replied with a grin.
“Why don’t you try playing against him? You’ll see what I mean.”
I said to him and let him decide.
“Ha…huhhh…ha…ha…eye movement…body movement…foot step…fine ball control…they all feint in different directions…I don’t understand his movement anymore…”
The ball game was a 10 minute x 2 format, but he didn’t even last the first 10 minutes before he was crushed.
This time, I’ll be marking him…
“Daaaaah, I’m losing, don’t mess with me! you reading club member!
“Haha! I had to show my cute junior that I am cool as a senior.”
The result was that our class lost.
Umi, with a freshman? I saw Umi high-fiving a freshman with a camera.
Was that the junior member of the photography club that Umi mentioned? Was she Amemiya?
Heh… that expression on her face… could it be…??
In the end, Umi’s class won the basketball tournament.
I can’t compete with him after all.
