Chapter 06: Making the Princess My Wife
Medina Aidron was confined in a room within the royal castle.
She wasn’t locked up in a jail cell. Instead, she was placed in a guest room. While it wasn’t luxurious, she was given three meals a day.
She was even allowed to walk around the castle with supervision if she wished.
That day, Medina was once again strolling through the garden with her maid.
“…It’s become lively. It’s so different from when my father ruled.”
Medina muttered wistfully, gazing at the castle corridor from the palace garden.
The castle, now the stronghold of the new government after falling to the rebel army, was bustling with people day and night.
Officials, soldiers, merchants, and townsfolk came and went.
Previously, only the elite could enter, but it had become much more open.
The faces of those working in the palace were full of hope.
Unlike before, when only the royal family and a few nobles seemed content, there was a stark contrast.
“Everyone seems to carry hope for the future, convinced that this country will improve.”
“Your Highness…”
The maid named Anne looked at the downcast Medina with a sympathetic expression.
A little distance away, a guard was standing watch.
However, he didn’t speak to Medina.
He didn’t seem to be an ally, but he wasn’t exactly an enemy either.
There had been times when he helped her when people with strong grudges against the royal family approached.
“Your Highness, just endure this for now. I’m sure you’ll be able to take back the castle and the country eventually!”
“…”
Anne’s encouraging words were strong, but Medina’s face remained somber.
(Can we really… should we really take back the country?)
Medina wondered.
Does the Aidron royal family even matter anymore?
The king, queen, and crown prince were executed, yet no one mourned their deaths. Many people even rejoiced.
(Even if nobles with royal blood like me regain power, it would only cause more confusion among the people. No one would be happy. No one would be saved.)
Besides, how would they even regain power?
Medina had seen a few familiar nobles around the castle, but they deliberately avoided her, not even greeting her.
She later learned that they had come to declare their allegiance to the new government.
Most of the nobles had already joined the new regime. No one was trying to restore the royal family.
(We… we’re not needed. Have the country and the people abandoned us?)
She didn’t blame the people. She had no right to.
The royal family had done things that made being abandoned inevitable.
“…Let’s give up, Anne. The Aidron Kingdom is gone. Restoring it is impossible. In fact, it shouldn’t be restored.”
“Your Highness, how can you say that…!”
“I should have been executed with my parents and brother. Instead of being kept like this, I wish I had died too…”
“…That’s not right.”
“…!”
“You!!”
Anne stood in front of Medina, shielding her.
A man had entered the garden without them noticing. He was the last person Medina wanted to see.
“…Van Arlengs. What do you want?”
He was the leader of the rebel army and the one responsible for Medina’s confinement.
“…Have you lost some weight? If your meals aren’t enough, I can ask the chef to increase the portions.”
“No, that’s not necessary. Answer my question instead.”
Medina glared at him and asked again,
“What do you want from me? We don’t talk unless there’s a reason, right?”
“…You’re right.”
Van sighed softly, his expression unreadable.
Medina couldn’t understand his feelings, but she felt like he was disappointed in her.
(Why does he look at me like that? I’m the last surviving member of the royal family he hates, aren’t I?)
Medina didn’t understand.
She knew the man before her was an exceptional knight.
His subordinates admired him, and the people trusted him.
However, some nobles disliked him.
If Van hadn’t started the rebellion, Medina might have seen him as the most reliable ally to help rebuild the Aidron Kingdom.
“…I’ve come to ask you for a favor today.”
“What could you possibly want from a fallen royal like me, who has lost all value?”
“…”
Van fell silent.
The man, known as the strongest and invincible knight, seemed to hesitate, his gaze wandering.
“Um…?”
“…Princess Medina.”
“Yes…”
“Will you become my wife?”
“…What?”
Medina was stunned into silence by the unexpected words.
Both Medina and Anne were left speechless by the shocking proposal.
They didn’t notice Van’s knees trembling from nervousness, despite his stoic expression.
(Help me, Moaaaaaa! I’m so scareddd!)
Neither Medina nor Anne realized that behind his stony facade, Van was inwardly crying out for his sister’s help.
