Chapter 8 – It Wasn’t a Dream
I’ve done it…
The next morning, I woke up in my bed in the six-tatami room, holding my head in my hands, remembering what had happened the day before.
I… kissed Miyama-sensei…didn’t I?
Or was it a dream? No, no, no, there’s no way it could be a dream when the memory is so vivid in my brain…
I’m… a teacher, right? A high school teacher?
And yet, I kissed a beautiful colleague on just my second day at the new school. That’s not just a problem——it’s a full-blown disaster.
Of course, there’s no way my contract said I can’t kiss a colleague, and even if Miyama-sensei and I were dating, I shouldn’t be disciplined for it, but…
That’s just the official stance.
If it were discovered that two teachers were dating (not that we are) at a boarding school full of daughters of wealthy families like this, I wouldn’t be able to stay here.
Ah… This is bad…
On my second day at school, having made a fatal mistake as a teacher, I headed to the school building in a feeling of despair and participated in the morning staff assembly.
“Oh, good morning Hosokawa-sensei! Did you sleep well last night?”
These were the words that Miyama-sensei spoke to me in the staff room.
She greeted me refreshingly, without a hint of awkwardness, as if the previous night hadn’t happened.
“Good morning…”
I replied, but I was not at all at peace inside.
I… kissed this person yesterday… Such a stunning woman pressed her soft body against mine and we shared our lips…
With such thoughts in my mind, I couldn’t concentrate on the contents of the morning assembly, and before I knew it, the morning staff assembly was over.
I left the staff room with a somewhat dazed head, but a sudden thought occurred to me.
Miyama-sensei had definitely been at least a little drunk last night——even if it was just from a single can of beer. Her face was red, though I couldn’t tell if it was from the bath or the alcohol. But realistically speaking, she had no reason to kiss someone like me.
So the most reasonable explanation is that it was just something that happened under the influence of alcohol.
And considering the cheerful way Miyama-sensei greeted me this morning, it was entirely possible that she no longer has any memory of the kiss in her mind.
Actually, could someone really greet the guy they drunkenly kissed the night before with that much cheerfulness if they did remember?
At the very least least, I couldn’t.
In that case, it would be reasonable to assume that Miyama-sensei doesn’t remember what happened last night.
That’s right!! That must be it!!
Let’s just pretend it never happened. If I just pretend it never happened, everything will be solved.
Thinking like that, my heart felt a little lighter as I walked towards the 2-B classroom.
“Do you still remember the taste of our kiss?”
Suddenly, I heard someone whisper in my ear and my heart nearly stopped.
“Eeekkk…”
I was so surprised that I couldn’t help letting out a pathetic voice, and the person that whispered in my ear giggled.
Naturally, the voice belonged to Miyama-sensei.
“S-sensei, so you do remember what happened yesterday after all——”
When I tried to speak, she put her index finger over my mouth and said, “Your voice is too loud.”
“Eh? Ah, I’m sorry… But about what happened yesterday…do you really remember?”
I asked again in a quieter voice, and Miyama-sensei let out a sigh.
“Hah~… I’m not particularly good with alcohol, but I’m not so weak that one can of beer will erase my memory.”
“I-I see…”
Unfortunately, she seems to remember it well.
But even if she remembered, why did she greet me so cheerfully this morning?
Women are scary…
“Well, about what happened last night——”
“It’s not something that can just be undone. Looking at how nervous you were in the staff room this morning, it seems like you still don’t have much tolerance for women.”
“But as a teacher, doing stuff like this is——”
“It’s just a role I’m playing. I don’t mind. If it helps you get more comfortable around women, I’ll take responsibility for playing the part. We’re both homeroom teachers for the second years, after all.”
“But…”
“Or are you worried you might fall for me if we keep doing this? If that’s the case, I wouldn’t mind getting serious either, you know.”
Miyama-sensei’s mischievous smile made my face heat up.
Naturally, I could tell she was teasing me. But I have no resistance to this kind of thing, so I couldn’t stop my face from heating up.
Miyama-sensei giggled again when she saw me like that.
Then she smiled at me and said, “Well, I’ll be going first,” and turned her back to me, walking towards her classroom.
However,
“Ah, that’s right.”
She stopped as if she remembered something, then turned towards me again and smiled.
“What is it?”
“It seems like a mouse showed up in the faculty dormitory last night.”
“What?! Seriously?!”
Sensei’s words made the blood drain from my face.
Well, it’s true that in that rundown dormitory it wouldn’t be weird that there’d be one or two rats, but it’s information I didn’t really want to hear.
When I was working part-time at an izakaya in college, I saw countless rats rummaging through the garbage, and it left a traumatic memory.
“Oh? Are you not good with mice, Sensei?”
“Is anyone good with mice?”
“I saw one running toward the student dorms right before I went back to my room last night.”
“S-seriously…?”
That’s a shame for the students.
“Ah, but don’t worry. I only saw one, and it was nothing like those sewer rats you see in the city. It was actually a really cute, tiny little mouse.”
“I-Is that so…”
“So cute, I bet even you’d fall head over heels for it, Sensei. Well then, good luck with your class today!”
And with that, Miyama-sensei walked off to her classroom.
Well… If it’s a mountain mouse, it probably isn’t all that dirty.
Maybe it was something like a dormouse or a harvest mouse?
With that thought in mind, I opened the door to classroom 2-B.
