Chapter 1 – An Environment Where No Problems Should Occur
“Finally… I’ve finally become a teacher…”
One autumn morning. As I walked down the school corridor, I, Hosokawa Ryuuki, felt that realization hit me once again.
The dream I’ve had since I was a child was about to come true.
Outside the window, I can see the endless mountains. It’s a wonderful space surrounded by nature, completely free from the hustle and bustle of the city.
The breeze blowing in through the open window is a little chilly, but it tells me that the lingering heat has completely disappeared and the most comfortable season of the year is just around the corner.
This is Seiou Private Academy. This high school, celebrating its 150th anniversary, is a refined all-girls’ school, where the daughters of company presidents and politicians from all over the country gather.
It is a girls’ boarding school tucked away in the mountains, about a two-hour drive from the city.
This high school is completely isolated from the rest of the world, allowing students to devote themselves to their studies in safety and security, away from the seedy allure of the city.
Today, I begin my duty as a teacher at this very school.
Not in spring, but in the middle of autumn. (T/N: School year usually starts at spring)
Now then, why did I come to this school at such an awkward time of year?
It’s because the school had a vacancy about a month ago, and I was hired on the recommendation of my former teacher from university.
Though I was able to graduate from university, I had failed the teacher recruitment exam and was in despair, but an unexpected recommendation from my former teacher allowed me to achieve my dream.
When I heard that it was an all-girls boarding school, and moreover a school for the daughters of wealthy business magnates and the children of politicians, I was hesitant at first, but since I had dreamed of becoming a teacher since I was a child, I had no reason to refuse.
And so right now, I’m more filled with hope than anxiety.
Just you wait, everyone!! I’m going to do everything I can to raise you all into fine adults!!
As I imagined the students I hadn’t yet met, I walked toward the classroom of class 2-B, where I had been appointed homeroom teacher. But just as I reached the staircase, I caught sight of a female student from behind.
The girl with a short bob, wearing a navy blue sailor uniform and black stockings, was carrying some kind of cardboard box up the stairs to the third floor. The box itself looked quite heavy.
Without hesitation, I ran over to her.
“Hey, are you okay?”
Saying this, I ran up the stairs and circled around to her… But…
“Kyahhh?!!”
The moment she saw me, the girl opened her eyes wide in shock and dropped the cardboard box she was holding to the floor.
With a thud, the box hit the floor, echoing loudly in the stairwell, making both of us flinch.
“S-Sorry!! I didn’t mean to startle you!! Are you hurt?”
I hastily lowered my eyes to her feet.
A fairly heavy cardboard box had fallen. If it had hit her toes directly, it could have caused serious injury.
I was in a panic, but the girl replied to me in a low voice, “I-I’m okay…”
Hearing her words, I sighed in relief.
Then, I looked back at her and she apologized,
“Sorry for calling out to you out of the blue.”
She looked quite young at first glance.
Well, she must be a high school student if she’s attending this school, but her big round eyes, small round face, and tiny mouth gave her a very youthful appearance.
I would almost believe it if she told me she was a middle school student.
No, that’s not important right now.
As soon as I started working here, I almost hurt a female student. Luckily nothing happened, but it was wrong of me to call out to her so carelessly.
As I was feeling guilty about it, she suddenly muttered, “I-I’m sorry…”
“Huh? W-why are you apologizing?”
“I just… I didn’t expect to see a young man here, so I was startled…”
“Oh, I see… I see…”
And strangely, I found myself understanding her seemingly incomprehensible words.
That’s right… This is Seiou Private Academy…
This school is… well, a bit unique.
Well, it’s an all-girls school so it’s to be expected, but the majority of the teachers at this high school are female, and although there are male teachers, they are all veterans who are two or three times older than me.
As our school is a boarding school in the mountains, outsiders rarely come, and it’s no exaggeration to say that the students have no opportunity to interact with a young man like me.
It’s no wonder that she was surprised and dropped the cardboard box.
So then, you might be wondering why a young man like me was hired at this high school…
It seems that in recent years, a wave of diversity has been coming to Seiou Academy, so they were experimenting by hiring a young man like me.
My former university teacher knew that I wasn’t the womanizer type, and I was pretty plain looking, so he thought I would be a safe choice and recommended me.
It’s a bit of a depressing reason, but my long-cherished dream of becoming a teacher had come true so I had no complaints.
Anyway, it seems I really startled this student.
I picked up the cardboard box that had fallen to the floor and smiled at her.
“It looks heavy, so I’ll carry it. Where should I take it?”
When I asked her that, she looked at me blankly for a while, then suddenly came to her senses and answered, “T-to classroom 2-B on the third floor.”
Huh? 2-B? That’s the class I’m in charge of… Wait, that means…
“Are you by any chance a student in 2-B?”
“Yes… I’m Sakurada Momo from class 2-B…”
I knew it, it seems she’s a student of my class after all. I’m sure I saw her name on the attendance list earlier.
“I see, I see. Actually, I’m going to be the homeroom teacher of 2-B starting from today——”
“Hosokawa-sensei… Right?”
“E-eh? You already know?”
“Yes. You’re going to be our homeroom teacher starting today, right? It’s been talked about in class.”
“I-I see…”
I was a little surprised she guessed my name, but thinking about it, of course the students would have been told. And if a completely unfamiliar man suddenly appeared, they’d easily figure it out.
“Well, if you already know, that makes things easier. I’m Hosokawa Ryuuki, and starting today, I’m joining you all as your teacher. Nice to meet you.”
When I introduced myself again, she blushed for some reason and bowed repeatedly to me.
“N-nice to meet you too!!”
So after introducing myself to one of my cute students, I headed up the stairs again.
But still, this cardboard box is quite heavy… How did this girl manage to carry it all by herself…
As I continued up the stairs, impressed by the strength of the petite girl walking next to me, Sakurada, who had been glancing my way for a while, spoke up.
“U-um…”
“What’s wrong?”
“Is sensei…a commuter?”
“Huh? Ah… I live in the teachers’ dormitory.”
Of all things, that’s what she asked.
She was wondering whether I commuted from home or lived in the dorms.
As I mentioned before, our school is located in an area isolated from the city. So naturally the students live in the dormitory, but the teachers can choose whether to live on campus or not.
Many teachers live in apartments called teachers’ dormitories, but teachers who have families apparently commute from the foot of the mountain by car, even though it takes a long time.
I don’t have a car, and it would be a hassle to commute two hours from the foot of the mountain, so I decided to live in the dorms. But I wonder why she was interested in that?
I wasn’t sure, but on second thought, maybe it’s because teachers living in the dorms are easier to approach if something comes up. From a student’s perspective, I guess it makes sense to care about that kind of thing.
To my answer, Sakurada softly replied, “I see. That’s a relief…”
And then——just for a split second——I thought I saw a faint, sly smile cross her lips.
Huh? Maybe I was just imagining it…
Or so I told myself, as I headed toward the classroom of 2-B, where my new students awaited me.
