The Former Introvert Returns To School For The First Time In A Long Time.
The Beginning of the Week.
I walked to school with Hatsune-san.
As we exchanged casual greetings, we headed to our seats, which were next to each other.
“Good morning, you two. Ueno-kun, it’s been a while, hasn’t it?”
As I was organizing my belongings after sitting down, the class representative approached us.
“Good morning, Chairperson!”
“Hatsune-san, you seemed a bit down recently, but you look cheerful today. It seems you’re really happy that your boyfriend, Ueno-kun, is back.”
“Eh, do I really seem that different…?”
The class representative pointed it out, but Hatsune-san couldn’t hide her smirk.
“Well, well,” the representative said with a sigh as she looked at me. “So, is it true that Ueno-kun was helping with Hatsune-san’s family business?”
“Yeah, that’s true.”
It was a lie.
But for now, it was better to go along with it.
When I re-entered the classroom without warning after being absent for the entire second term, my classmates were surprised.
However, it didn’t escalate into more chaos because Hatsune-san had managed the situation with our classmates and the school.
“It’s unusual for a high school student like you to take such a long absence from school to help out at your girlfriend’s family business… You denied it, but it certainly raises some suspicions.”
“Suspicions about what?”
“I mean whether you two have developed a relationship that’s more than just boyfriend and girlfriend. While you were away, there were whispers in class about you two being engaged.”
“Such rumors…?”
Now that I think about it, my mom had a similar suspicion.
It seems like my classmates also enjoy that kind of gossip.
I don’t like being talked about or being the center of attention.
To be more precise, I’ve had very little experience with it in my life, so I feel quite bewildered.
Still, compared to the time when I went missing in spring and no one cared, I might say I’ve integrated into the class more this time.
“Hatsune-san denied it, but I think some classmates would like to hear it straight from you, Ueno-kun…”
“Asuha, you shouldn’t bring up topics that might trouble them,” a central figure among the boys in class, Shiina, chimed in.
Shiina was the only one in class who called the class representative by her first name.
“It’s been a while, Ueno-kun.”
“Yeah, it has.”
I returned Shiina’s greeting.
“I’m not troubling them at all. I’m just voicing the thoughts of the class,” the class representative said.
“Even in situations like this, acting like a class representative, you’re really something, Asuha,” Shiina teased her.
“Hmph! What do you mean ‘acting like a class representative’? I am the genuine class representative! The only one who doesn’t call me ‘Chairperson’ is you, Shiina-kun.”
“Isn’t that special enough?”
With that, Shiina playfully patted the class representative’s head.
“Special feeling… that’s true.”
The class representative seemed to rebel at first, but then she quietly accepted Shiina’s playful pat.
They were childhood friends and were dating.
Even so, to be able to flirt so openly in class in the morning—this is definitely something only an outgoing couple would do.
It’s dazzling to the point that I can’t look directly at them.
Wait.
Could it be that from a third-party perspective, Hatsune-san and I look like this too?
…No, there’s no point in thinking about that, so I’ll just leave it be.
Just as I concluded this in my mind…
“Hey, Shiina! Have you heard that a transfer student came to the first year?”
The slightly oblivious and cheerful Shinbashi approached Shiina and the class representative without caring about their flirting.
“Uh, a transfer student? That’s news to me.”
Shiina looked momentarily bewildered, then withdrew his hand from the class representative’s head to respond to Shinbashi’s conversation.
Next to them, the class representative wore a slightly dissatisfied expression, but Shinbashi continued chatting, completely unaware of the cause.
“Apparently, a stunning beauty has transferred to the first year—it’s the talk of the town!”
“It’s a bit late for a transfer student to show up after the second term has started,” Shiina pointed out.
“Yeah. It’s not only rare to have a transfer student, but the fact that she’s a beauty is getting the first-years all excited.”
Hearing about a transfer student from another grade first thing in the morning—it’s mysterious how well-connected the outgoing students are.
“So, Shinbashi, have you seen what this transfer student looks like yet?”
“No, not yet… but according to rumors, she’s an exchange student. I hear she’s a silver-haired girl.”
Silver hair?
As I listened to their conversation nearby, that description struck a chord with me.
Just recently, I had been caught up with a silver-haired, tanned elf maid from another world.
And that maid… Meryl had mentioned she would think of ways to meet me frequently.
…No way, could it be?
