I Asked A Beautiful Girl, Who Was About To Jump Off The School Rooftop, 'If You're Going To Die Anyway, Could You At Least Take My Virginity Before You Go?' To My Surprise, She Agreed. - Chapter 70: There's No Room Between Lovers.
There’s No Room Between Lovers.
As August reached its final stretch, and with less than two weeks of summer vacation remaining, I found myself at school.
It wasn’t a mandatory school day today. Instead, it was a day when our class gathered to prepare for the upcoming cultural festival. Participation was voluntary, so only about half of my classmates showed up. The meeting time was also a relaxed 10:30, later than the usual school start time.
For people like Hatsune-san and me, who tend to be more solitary, days like this with voluntary attendance usually meant staying home. However, recently Hatsune-san has been making more friends, and she decided to come today after being invited by the class president.
It’s the kind of classic summer experience—getting together with classmates during vacation to prepare for the school festival—so Hatsune-san had been looking forward to it since the day before. She even invited me through Line, and so here I was, reluctantly showing up.
But, I was already starting to regret it a little.
We were all gathered in the classroom for 2nd-year, Class 3, supposedly to work on festival preparations, but progress was sluggish. Sure, half the class was missing, but it felt more like everyone was just in a summer holiday mood, too relaxed to do any real work. Everyone was chatting and barely moving a finger.
I wasn’t the one in charge of managing progress, so I didn’t particularly care if things weren’t moving forward. My problem was that I didn’t have anyone to talk to.
The guys I had gotten to know a bit during the ball game tournament were all absent today, and none of the boys in the group I was working with were people I had ever really talked to. So, I was completely by myself.
(Being alone is something I’m used to… but today, I really feel like I miscalculated.)
With a light sigh, I glanced across the classroom.
Hatsune-san was chatting happily with some of the other girls in class. But the person she was talking to this time was different from her usual crowd. She was with Shirogane.
(That’s an unusual pair… What are they talking about?)
As I watched them from a distance, my mind drifted back to when I went shopping with Shirogane.
Shirogane is, well, what you’d call a “bit of a flirt.” She’s quite open about these things—enough to invite someone like me, who already has a girlfriend, without hesitation. She’s rather free-spirited when it comes to matters of romance.
And now, there she was, talking to Hatsune-san, someone she normally doesn’t interact with.
(I’ve got a bad feeling about this…)
I don’t think Shirogane is a bad person, but her worldview is far too different from that of your average high school girl.
…I just hope she’s not putting any strange ideas into Hatsune-san’s head.
As I idled away some time, noon arrived.
Now, Hatsune-san and I were sitting together in an empty classroom, eating lunch. As always, I was grateful to enjoy the homemade bento she had prepared. While eating, I decided to ask about something that had been on my mind.
“Hatsune-san, I noticed earlier you were talking with Shirogane.”
“Y-Yeah… we were talking.”
Hatsune-san’s response was awkward, almost embarrassed.
“What were you talking about?”
“Umm… do you really want to know?”
“If it’s something you can’t talk about, you don’t have to force yourself.”
“Well… I think I should tell you.”
After a brief moment of hesitation, Hatsune-san began explaining. Apparently, Shirogane had taken an interest in Ueno Yakumo—meaning me. She had tried to approach me directly, but I turned her down. However, instead of losing interest, it only made her more intrigued, so she decided to talk to Hatsune-san instead.
“And then… well, she sort of made an offer, saying it could be an ‘unusual experience.'”
“An offer? What do you mean?”
“Umm, that is… she invited us—me, you, and Shirogane—to do something together… the three of us.”
Now that’s quite the proposal. As I suspected, Shirogane had indeed put some strange ideas into Hatsune-san’s head. After being rejected by me, she thought she could get Hatsune-san’s permission directly. In a way, I had to admire her boldness.
“Just to clarify, how did you respond?”
“Wh-What? Of course… I turned her down!”
Hatsune-san answered, flustered.
“Yeah, that makes sense. Honestly, I’m relieved to hear that.”
I wouldn’t have known how to handle the situation if she had said yes.
“Really? I felt happy when I heard you had turned her down too!”
Hatsune-san smiled shyly.
…I’m glad I didn’t get swayed by Shirogane’s temptation.
I want to protect that smile.
After the lunch break, we returned to the 2nd-year, Class 3 classroom.
“Ah, this looks like a failed strategy. It seems there’s no room for me to intervene,” Shirogane said, observing Hatsune-san and me holding hands as we walked back into the classroom, a wry smile on her face.
“I feel bad for you, but Hatsune-san and I have a harmonious relationship,” I replied.
“Hmm… well, I’m not planning to give up just yet. So, Ueno, what are you doing after this?”
“N-No way!?”
“Is that so? Then how about this, Ichigaya—let’s just be friends.”
What is with her lighthearted attitude?
“Friends…?”
“Exactly. Ichigaya is a beauty, so getting close to you could be beneficial in many ways. Can you give me your Line ID?”
“Beneficial…? I don’t really understand, but being friends sounds good!”
Hatsune-san seemed unsure but was steadily expanding her social circle.
…I hope she doesn’t get influenced in strange ways, but I think she’ll be fine.
