Does The Former Introvert Get Jealous…?
“Are you really okay with that?”
“Yeah. While I’m in high school, I’ve decided to live in my current place.”
Hatsune-san nodded at my question. It was just before noon in mid-August. I had invited Hatsune-san to my home, and we were chatting in the living room. Today, my parents had gone out together, and my younger sister Mayuki, who was preparing for entrance exams, was at summer classes.
“I thought you would be living with your grandfather.”
“I care about my grandpa, but I think what’s important is that we have a relationship where we can see each other anytime, rather than just living in the same house.”
“That makes sense,” I said, feeling convinced by Hatsune-san’s sentiment. Considering that Hatsune-san and her grandfather had been out of touch for many years, it was a good relationship.
“Anyway, it means I’ll be living in the same place until I graduate from high school.”
“So, where will you go after graduation?”
“Well, that depends on my future plans.”
“Future plans… Are you planning to go to university, Hatsune-san?”
“Yeah. So, I think I’ll move closer to the university after I graduate from high school.”
“I see…”
“What about you, Yakumo-kun? What do you plan to do?”
“Me…”
Future plans after high school. I had asked Hatsune-san, but I hadn’t really thought much about my own situation yet. However, maybe I had an idea.
“Somehow, I was thinking I’d go to university too… maybe.”
“It’d be great if we could go to the same university!”
“Going to the same university as you…”
I imagined the future a few years from now. After graduating high school, I’d attend the same university as Hatsune-san. Perhaps we’d even live in the same apartment together… That sounded so exciting. I hoped that future would come true.
“To make that happen, I’ll need the grades to get into the same university as you, Hatsune-san. Honestly, I’m not very confident about that.”
“You did well on your last term exams, so I’m sure you’ll be fine, Yakumo-kun.”
“Well, yeah. I’ll do my best to study as much as I can.”
With Hatsune-san’s encouragement, I began to feel like it really might be possible. Of course, in the end, it would all depend on my efforts.
“Speaking of studying, I think Mayuki-chan will be back from classes, right?”
“Yeah. Today, the summer classes only go until the morning. She said she’d hurry back once they finish.”
The truth is, I invited Hatsune-san to my house today because Mayuki wanted to see her.
“Hehe, I can’t wait to see her too!”
…Looks like Hatsune-san was just as eager to meet her.

As we were chatting, Mayuki returned home.
“I’m back!”
“Oh, it’s Mayuki-chan! Welcome back!”
Hatsune-san rushed over to Mayuki and embraced her with enthusiasm.
“Whoa… Hatsune-san, what are you doing all of a sudden?”
“Well, Mayuki-chan is just so cute that I couldn’t help it.”
“Cute, you say?”
“Yep, Mayuki-chan is really cute!”
“Come on…”
Mayuki, slightly flustered by Hatsune-san’s embrace, didn’t seem to want to pull away.
“…I think this is a bit too close for comfort, though.”
“Oh, Onii-chan. Are you feeling jealous that I’m stealing Hatsune-san away from you?”
Mayuki grinned as she looked at me.
“Why would I be jealous of my sister?”
“Maybe it’s the other way around, and you’re jealous that I’m stealing Mayuki-chan from you?”
Hatsune-san held Mayuki tightly and glanced at me, curious about my reaction.
“Well, that’s not the case either.”
“…That kind of annoys me.”
For some reason, Mayuki glared at me as if sulking.
Why am I being teased and blamed here?
***
It was lunchtime, so the three of us headed to a nearby family restaurant.
Across from me, Mayuki was sitting next to Hatsune-san, enjoying their meal and chatting happily.
(Am I somehow feeling left out…?)
I should be happy that the two of them get along so well, but something felt off. Could it be that I’m feeling jealous…?
“By the way, are you really okay with me being here? I thought maybe you and my brother would want to hang out just the two of you since you’re dating…”
Mayuki said this with a hint of regret, as if realizing it too late. While she wanted to see Hatsune-san, she also felt a sense of hesitation.
“You don’t need to worry about that, Mayuki-chan. In fact, after all the outings we’ve had, I’m currently reflecting on how much money we’ve spent,” Hatsune-san replied.
That’s right.
Recently, Hatsune-san and I have been trying our best to avoid spending too much money when we go out together.
It’s a bit embarrassing, but as high school students, it’s understandable that our financial situation is tight.
“But Hatsune-san, can’t you just ask your grandpa for some pocket money?”
Mayuki casually brought this up.
She had recently learned that Hatsune-san was actually from a wealthy family.
“Hmm, I’m not sure. My grandpa is a strict person…”
Hatsune-san said this, but I had the opposite thought.
Sure, Hatsune-san’s grandpa always had a scary expression, but I felt like he was surprisingly lenient with his granddaughter.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he suddenly handed her an enormous amount of pocket money.
“Either way, it wouldn’t be healthy to ask grandpa for pocket money right after wasting it, so I won’t do that.”
“Wow, Hatsune-san, you’re so practical despite being a rich girl…!”
Mayuki looked at Hatsune-san with sparkling eyes.
Having been alone for a long time, it seemed Hatsune-san had developed a strong sense of independence.
Even so, it felt like Mayuki was placing too much faith in Hatsune-san.
“But, maybe it wouldn’t be bad to rely on my grandpa just a little,” Hatsune-san said.
“A little bit? How so?” I asked.
“I feel uneasy about just receiving money without doing anything, so I was thinking of asking him to help me find a job.”
Hatsune-san answered my question like that.
“A job…? Hatsune-san, do you plan on getting a part-time job?” I inquired.
“Yeah! Oh, since we’re at it, how about you join me, Yakumo-kun?”
Hatsune-san’s suggestion was appealing, especially since I was currently low on funds.
