The Most Beautiful Girl in High School Was Afraid of Her Grandpa.
The Next Day.
I decided to go with Hatsune-san to meet her grandfather.
It was Hatsune-san’s suggestion that it would be better to go sooner rather than later, which led to our impromptu visit.
She mentioned that she had been called by her uncle today, but she decided to ignore that plan.
“Somehow, this place feels different from an ordinary residential area…?”
“That’s probably because only the extremely wealthy live here.”
In response to Hatsune-san, who spoke in a quieter voice than usual, I replied.
We were now in a high-end residential area located right in the middle of the big city.
Even though it was just a little way in from the bustling shopping district, an unusual silence enveloped the place.
The mansions lining the streets were all surrounded by long, tall walls, obstructing any view into the interiors.
No one was walking on the road, and I couldn’t feel any human presence.
Only the occasional luxury car would pass by.
It was clear that Hatsune-san had been here before, but I figured she had always been driven in one of those cars, so she probably had never walked here.
“Oh, this is it, Yakumo-kun!”
After walking for a while, we arrived at our destination.
Hatsune-san stopped in front of a particularly grand house with fortress-like gates and walls, which stood out among the surrounding mansions.
“This is where Hatsune-san’s grandfather lives…”
“Yeah. There’s no nameplate, but this is definitely my grandfather’s house.”
Since there was no nameplate displayed in front of the house, anyone passing by wouldn’t know who lived there.
Other mansions were the same, so this might be one of the measures to prevent unwanted visitors.
“Wow, the wall continues on as far as the eye can see…”
I was overwhelmed by the scale of it.
Just how wealthy is the owner of this house?
I was reminded once again that Hatsune-san is the granddaughter of such a person.
“Should I just press this intercom?”
Next to the gate, there was an intercom.
That part was no different from an ordinary household, but the numerous security cameras facing us near the intercom and gate made me feel the high level of security.
“Yeah. I’m a bit worried since we came without notice, but I think it’ll be fine with you here, Hatsune-san.”
“Y-yeah…!”
Hatsune-san, with a slightly nervous expression, pressed the intercom button.
After a brief pause, a response came.
“Who is it?”
It was the voice of an older woman.
Could it be a housekeeper or someone else?
“Uh, um. I’m Ichigaya Hatsune.”
“Ichigaya…?”
“Yes, I’m the granddaughter visiting Ichigaya Kuranosuke, who lives in this house.”
When Hatsune-san said this, the person on the other end fell silent.
“Please hold on for a moment.”
After about ten seconds of silence, that was the response given, and the call was cut off.
“It got disconnected. Was it no good…?”
“From the response, it doesn’t seem like we were turned away at the gate.”
Just as Hatsune-san and I were exchanging those words, the large gate opened automatically with a low sound.
It seemed we had been deemed acceptable to enter.
A moment after the gate opened, a woman who appeared to be a servant came to greet us.
We walked through the garden and entered the building through the front entrance, where we were guided to a tatami room that seemed to be a reception area.
As we sat on the cushions, after a while, a different servant came in with tea and announced, “The master will be here shortly.”
“…”
“…”
We waited in silence for Hatsune-san’s grandfather to arrive, both of us quiet.
I felt a sense of tension as I thought.
(To be honest, I have no idea what kind of expression I should have when we meet…)
I was Hatsune-san’s boyfriend, but I was clearly an outsider to this family.
Oh no.
What if he thinks that his granddaughter suddenly shows up after a long time with a stranger? That’s quite a scenario, isn’t it?
And not just any stranger, but her boyfriend.
I decided to act as merely an accompanying person this time and tried to keep a low profile as Hatsune-san’s plus-one.
Before long, Hatsune-san’s grandfather arrived.
Ichigaya Kuranosuke.
He was an elderly man with white hair and a white beard, yet he still exuded vitality at first glance.
He carried an air of dignity and grace, and I could understand Hatsune-san’s impression of him as someone who “always had a scary face.”
When I glanced at Hatsune-san, her expression was visibly tense.
Of course, I wasn’t any exception to that.
“It’s been a while.”
Hatsune-san’s grandfather sat down across from us, looking sharply at Hatsune-san.
“I-it’s been a while.”
Hatsune-san greeted him, looking flustered.
“And who is this boy next to you?”
Hatsune-san’s grandfather asked, glancing at me while questioning Hatsune-san.
“Uh, this person is…”
Hatsune-san hesitated as she tried to explain.
“I’m Ueno Yakumo. I’m a classmate of Hatsune-san’s from the same school.”
“I see…”
Hatsune-san’s grandfather looked at me closely, as if appraising me, but he had no further words to say.
It wasn’t a lie that we went to the same school or that we were classmates.
It was just that there was a lack of information.
Information about our relationship, for instance.
The thought of being questioned about that made me even more nervous, but it seemed I had managed to get through this situation for now.
While I felt relieved, Hatsune-san was pouting next to me.
Could it be that she was dissatisfied with the fact that I didn’t explain our relationship properly?
It felt a bit unreasonable since Hatsune-san had hesitated too, but well, it was true that I had chickened out.
“So, what brings you here suddenly?”
“Uh, um… I’m sorry.”
Hatsune-san stumbled over her words and bowed her head slightly.
But…
It seemed like she was overly frightened.
“I don’t think your grandfather is blaming you at all.”
I couldn’t help but interject.
“It’s just that since then, I haven’t had the chance to meet or contact you.”
Hatsune-san’s grandfather neither affirmed nor denied my words but instead said something that seemed to be an explanation.
“That ‘since then’ must refer to the incident when Hatsune-san’s parents went missing.”
“So…?”
Hatsune-san tilted her head at her grandfather’s words.
“I think he’s surprised.”
“Is that so?”
Upon hearing my speculation, Hatsune-san looked at her grandfather.
However, she still received no reaction from him.
“…Hatsune, you’ve grown up. You were just a little child back then, so it’s surprising to see how much you’ve matured. I’ve heard you’re doing well in school, too.”
“Ah, thank you.”
Instead, what was said was a compliment directed at Hatsune-san.
Although she was still bewildered, I could see her cheeks relaxing a bit.
Even though she might have various thoughts, it seemed she was happy to be praised.
“…”
“…”
However, the conversation between the two of them didn’t continue.
It quickly fell into silence.
In the midst of that, Hatsune-san glanced at me from the side.
As if seeking help.
(I understand that even if she has a lot to say, she probably lacks the courage to voice it…)
Being someone who has always struggled with communication myself, I can relate to the feeling of wanting to say something but being unable to.
I gently placed my hand over Hatsune-san’s hand under the table.
This was about all I could do for her right now.
I hoped that this would ease her feelings a bit and make it easier for her to talk.
It seemed that this action had a certain effect.
Hatsune-san clasped my hand in return.
At the same time, her expression turned more resolute.
“If you needed to show your face, you could have just called. Why didn’t you reach out to me at all?”
Hatsune-san voiced the question that she had likely been pondering for a long time to her grandfather.
“I thought you hated me. Your guardian, Kouzou, told me that you were placed in an environment to focus on your studies, so I shouldn’t disturb you. That’s why it was surprising that you came to visit today.”
“I have a lot to say about that… but I don’t actually hate you, Grandpa.”
“I see.”
For the first time, it seemed like Hatsune-san’s grandfather, Kazunosuke Ichigaya, relaxed his stern expression a little.
“But why did you think I hated you? Did you just take your uncle’s word for it?”
In a somewhat accusatory tone, Hatsune-san pressed on.
“It’s not because of what he said. When you were younger, you always hid behind your mother and looked frightened whenever you saw me. That expression stuck in my memory, so I thought you disliked me.”
“That’s… just that, when I was little, your face scared me.”
“Scared…?”
Surprised, Hatsune-san’s grandfather widened his eyes.
“I thought I was the one who was disliked by you. I mean, you never contacted me at all… and more than anything, you always had a scary face.”
“There’s no way I could dislike my grandchild. This face is just how I was born.”
“Is that so? So, does that mean we both misunderstood that we hated each other?”
“…It seems so. I have to admit, I’m not good at human relationships outside of work.”
It seems that the misunderstanding between Hatsune-san and her grandfather has been resolved.
They both felt disliked by the other, but in reality, it was just a misconception.
This might be rude to say, but it turns out they were both just socially awkward.
What they needed was likely just conversation.
However, there had been a presence that had deprived them of that opportunity.
Hatsune-san needed to convey this fact to her grandfather.
“Then… will you be on my side, Grandpa?”
“Of course, I will be on your side.”
Hatsune-san’s grandfather nodded firmly and clearly.
Upon hearing that answer, Hatsune-san let out a sigh of relief and began to recount everything she had endured from her uncle and the current situation she found herself in.
“Kouzou did something like that… This is my responsibility for having entrusted him with guardianship. From now on, I will protect you in his place. I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you until now…”
“To be honest, I still have things I want to say… but if you’re going to help me, I’ll forgive you. After all, you’re my grandpa.”
Hatsune-san puffed out her cheeks like a sulking child, and her grandfather, who had seemed intimidating, let out a small laugh.
“Of course, I will also deal with the matter of the misappropriated assets that Kouzou was supposed to manage, as well as the engagement issue. You don’t have to worry about anything going forward.”
“Thank you…!”
Just as Hatsune-san happily expressed her gratitude, a servant entered the room and relayed something to her grandfather.
“He’s here.”
“Huh? Who is?”
Hatsune-san asked her grandfather.
“Kouzou. He originally wanted to discuss something important today and cleared his schedule for it… but it seems we’ll need to change plans a bit.”
Hatsune-san’s grandfather’s eyes seemed to shine sharply… or at least, that’s what I thought.
