Receiving Advice from the Most Beautiful Girl in the School Year.
After I carried the shopping bags to school, I went to an empty classroom and contacted Hatsune-san.
As soon as I connected the video call, Hatsune-san answered.
“Sorry for the sudden call, Yakumo-kun.”
Today, Hatsune-san had been called by her uncle and had returned to the house where she used to live with her parents. However, based on the background visible in the call, it looked like she was currently at a family restaurant or somewhere similar.
“It’s no problem, but the fact that you’re calling me out of the blue… does that mean something happened with your uncle?”
“Yeah, it’s turned out to be more troublesome than I thought.”
“Troublesome? What happened?”
“When I got here today, they started talking to me about my marriage prospects.”
“Marriage prospects… so they’re trying to marry you off to someone?”
Hatsune-san’s family is from a powerful conglomerate. I had heard rumors about political marriages being a thing in such circles, and I had a feeling that something like that might one day happen. But to hear it being discussed while she’s still a student…
“Yeah. They want to marry me off to my cousin.”
“That guy…”
Her cousin was the man I met during our trip.
“From what I’ve heard, it’s something he needs to do in order to secure the position of heir to the Ichigaya Group.”
According to Hatsune-san, her grandfather currently holds the top position in the company. He’s a brilliant businessman, but he’s elderly and his health has been declining for quite some time. Her father was originally the heir but has gone missing, leaving the position vacant. As a result, there’s a silent battle for succession within the Ichigaya Group.
Her cousin, a young and capable individual, currently holds an important position and is one of the candidates for the role. However, it seems that’s not enough to guarantee his succession. By marrying Hatsune-san, the only daughter of the direct family line, he would gain a significant advantage in the race.
“I understand the situation now, but what matters is not what they want. The important thing is what you want, Hatsune-san.”
“Of course, I don’t intend to marry anyone right now. More than anything, I want to be with you, Yakumo-kun.”
Hatsune-san smiled softly as she spoke.
“But you’re saying the person you’re dealing with won’t just back down easily, right?”
“Yeah. Right now, it’s just talk, but if they get serious, they might have me move out of my current apartment, drop out of school, and even send someone to drag me back.”
“That’s a pretty extreme measure.”
“They’re recognized as my guardians, so they claim they have the right to oversee me and my assets… but I think that’s an overstep.”
“Yeah, there’s no reason for you to just comply with that.”
I unconsciously clenched my fist as I listened. The fact that the adults who should be protecting Hatsune-san were taking the exact opposite approach made me furious.
“Well, even knowing all that, I didn’t have anyone to rely on until I met you, Yakumo-kun. I tried going to the proper places for help, but either no one took me seriously or they used the Ichigaya name to cover things up.”
She had no one to turn to, and when she did seek help, she was betrayed. In a situation where no one was on her side, Hatsune-san was all alone. But she spoke of it as something from the past. That meant she had someone on her side now.
She said that she hadn’t had anyone to rely on until she met me. And I wanted to respond to that feeling.
“Hatsune-san, if you ever run into trouble, don’t hesitate to tell me anything.”
“Thank you, Yakumo-kun. Well, in the end, if I just throw everything away and run away, then the marriage talk will probably stop… but…”
“But?”
“Still, I have some attachment to the memories with my father and mother in that house. Letting go of all of that completely… I’m not sure, but I feel a little regret. Is that greedy of me?”
Hatsune-san squints her eyes, looking somewhat lonely.
If her uncle and the others are trying to take away her freedom, knowing how she feels, then…
I can never forgive them.
“Hatsune-san, you haven’t done anything wrong. You don’t need to run away or hide. I’ll take care of this.”
“I’ve heard about your abilities before, and I do want to rely on you… but, please, don’t push yourself too hard, okay?”
Hatsune-san listens to my words and looks at me with concern.
“I won’t push myself, but I won’t mess up either.”
“I… I’m really worried about you, though…?”
“I’m happy to hear that, but Hatsune-san, you’re the one who’s supposed to be worried, so you don’t have to worry about me.”
“Even if you say that… I still worry about you. I love you.”
“…Thank you.”
It’s embarrassing when she says she loves me in the middle of such a serious conversation.
In any case, I don’t plan to take any drastic measures right away. It’s not a problem that can be solved with just that.
Even if I remove her uncle, I can’t take his place. Even if I had some kind of cheat from another world, in this one, I’m just a high school student.
Ultimately, while the situation is complicated, this is still a family matter. Simply intervening without understanding the full picture might not lead to a solution.
(That said, it’s a situation that can’t just be left alone…)
Since Hatsune-san doesn’t want it, I can’t just let the marriage conversation continue like this.
“Is there anyone who could oppose this situation?”
“Well… if I had to say, it would be my grandfather. After all, the most powerful person in the Ichigaya family is him.”
“But from what I’ve heard, you can’t rely on your grandfather, can you?”
“Yeah. Since my parents passed away, I’ve become distant from him.”
“I see…”
I don’t know much about Hatsune-san’s family or relatives. I’ve heard about the succession dispute from her, but there are many things a student like me wouldn’t be able to learn.
I need to know more. I need to figure out who the real enemy is.
Only then can I begin to solve the problems surrounding Hatsune-san.
