I Want to Take the Most Beautiful Girl in the School to a Place Where We Can Be Alone.
After leaving the kimono shop, Hatsune-san and I continued to stroll around, soaking our feet in a foot bath to relax, enjoying the hot spring town.
As evening approached, food stalls lined the riverside in time for the fireworks display, and the number of tourists and locals grew.
After browsing a few of the stalls, Hatsune-san and I found a spot to watch the fireworks and made our way to a bridge spanning the river.
The fireworks were set to be launched from the riverbank.
Since the view was unobstructed here, we figured it would be a good spot to watch them.
The area was organized so that spectators could safely enjoy the show, with separate areas for viewing and for passage.
As the sky grew completely dark, Hatsune-san and I stood by the bridge’s railing, waiting for the fireworks to begin.
“We got here early, so we managed to grab a good spot,” she said.
Hatsune-san was holding a bottle of ramune in one hand. With the other, she picked up a toothpick and brought a takoyaki she had placed on the railing to her mouth.
“You’re really enjoying the festival, huh?”
“Well, I wanted to try a bit more food, but I could only afford so much, so this is about it.”
She said this, though before we came here, she had already eaten yakisoba.
“You’re surprisingly hungry, huh?”
“Well, I’m still in my growing phase, so…” she responded with a playful smile.
“Growing phase, huh…?” I mused, wondering which part of her body she meant. It was a pointless thought, so I decided not to ask.
“I kind of wish I’d seen you emptying out the fish pond in a goldfish scooping game, or continuing to win prizes at the lottery stall, Yakumo-kun,” she added.
“That would be cheating, wouldn’t it?” I replied.
It seemed she was curious about seeing Yakumo use the skills he had gained from another world in the stalls.
“Come on, you’ve at least thought about it once, right?”
“Well, I’ve thought about it, sure. But using them recklessly could end up causing more harm than good.”
“Yakumo-kun, you are amazing, though. You have got abilities beyond anyone else, yet you know how to use them wisely. If it were me, I’d probably just use them right away.”
Hatsune-san smiled innocently.
Even if Hatsune-san had some kind of cheat skill, I couldn’t really picture her abusing it.
“By the way, I didn’t completely refrain from using skills today, you know. I actually used my clairvoyance skill in front of the lottery stall.”
“Huh? Yakumo-kun, you were cheating? Give me back my compliment!” she teased, nudging me playfully.
“I wasn’t planning on participating, but I just peeked at the lot out of curiosity.”
“So, did you find the winning ticket?”
“I’ll leave that part as a secret,” I said with a grin.
Just as I was trying to avoid answering Hatsune-san’s question, the fireworks shot up into the night sky.
The loud boom of the explosions echoed a moment later.
“Oh, it’s starting!”
Hatsune-san’s gaze shifted toward the fireworks, and I followed her line of sight. It occurred to me that it had been years since I last properly watched fireworks like this at a venue. When I was a kid, my parents took me to see them, but after middle school, I didn’t feel like going with them anymore. And since I was usually alone, I didn’t have anyone to go with.
“They’re beautiful…” Hatsune-san whispered.
“Yeah.”
I nodded while watching her, her face glowing in awe as she gazed up at the sky.
“Fuufuu~~, still, today was so much fun… I feel like I’ve made some great memories on this trip with you, my first summer spent with you, Yakumo-kun.”
Listening to her nostalgic tone, I found myself thinking. How many more times would I be able to spend time with Hatsune-san like this? Was this thought brought on by the events of the day?
“Hmm? Yakumo-kun, you look kind of lonely all of a sudden.”
“I didn’t think my face was that easy to read.”
I always thought I was good at hiding my emotions.
“I’m pretty confident that I notice things about you better than anyone else, you know,” Hatsune-san said, her expression proud.
“I see…”
“Well… it’s true that you never know what the future holds. That’s why, from the moment I first met you, I’ve always trusted my intuition. I want to value it.”
Hatsune-san’s words felt as if she understood exactly what I had been thinking.
“Trust your intuition… like, suddenly pushing me down, for example?”
I asked, without really thinking, and for a brief moment, Hatsune-san’s smile froze. However, she Hatsune-sanHatsune-sanquickly recovered and continued.
“Well, uh… anyway. What I mean is, I want to treasure the feelings I have in the present, and share moments with you that only the two of us can experience at that time. And I want to keep creating beautiful memories like that. Of course, I’d love for it to last forever…”
After she finished speaking, I looked at her and thought to myself.
“Hatsune-san, your face is red.”
“…Maybe it’s just the light from the fireworks?”
“I don’t think that’s it.”
“Stop teasing me already. I was trying to say something meaningful.”
“Sorry, I just couldn’t help it because your words made me really happy.”
“W-What, now you’re trying to make me embarrassed again?”
“I think embarrassed Hatsune-san is cute, too.”
I turned to face Hatsune-san and gently placed my hand on her shoulder.
“You’re so smooth…”
She said this, but as if sensing something, she closed her eyes and braced herself.
I leaned in, ready to kiss her, but then stopped myself.
“This place is too public… Maybe we should hold off.”
“So, what you’re saying is, you want to take me somewhere where we can be alone, right?”
When she opened her eyes, she tilted her head slightly.
I realized then how my words could have been interpreted that way.
