The Most Beautiful Girl in School Wants to Dress the Boy She Likes in a Yukata.
After placing the heavy luggage in the room, I left the inn with Hatsune-san. We were leisurely strolling along the riverside, exploring the old-fashioned hot spring town.
“I want to see a lot of things, but where should we start?” Hatsune-san asked, walking beside me.
“I want to see a lot of things,” she said, but her gaze was fixed on a particular direction.
“That seems to be the local specialty,” she said, pointing ahead.
I turned to follow her gaze, and sure enough, there was a shop. From the characters on the noren (curtain) hanging at the entrance, it looked like a soba shop.
“Yes, it’s famous for its soba and mountain vegetable tempura,” Hatsune-san nodded in agreement.
Just as she spoke, a small sound came from Hatsune-san’s stomach—kururu—a telltale sign of hunger.
Now that I thought about it, it was around lunchtime.
“How about we have lunch first?” I suggested.
“Hehe~” Hatsune-san placed a hand over her stomach, looking embarrassed.

After enjoying the local soba and tempura, Hatsune-san and I left the shop.
“Ahh, that was delicious,” she said with a satisfied smile.
“Yeah, it really had the taste of proper soba,” I agreed with her.
“Well then, shall we continue our stroll?” Hatsune-san suggested, suddenly taking my hand and intertwining our fingers.
It was what you’d call holding hands, the way lovers do.
“A stroll, huh… Is there anywhere you’d like to go, Hatsune-san?” I asked.
“Well, I suppose I’m counting on your escort, Yakumo-kun,” she replied, her tone teasing.
“Even if you say that… this is my first time here,” I said, feeling a little guilty for not having planned better.
I regretted not doing more research about the place before coming.
“Then, how about we just walk around leisurely together?” Hatsune-san suggested, not scolding me for being a bit clueless.
“Thank you, Hatsune-san… and, um, sorry about that.”
“Why are you apologizing? Honestly, just wandering around aimlessly with you makes me happy,” she said with a smile.
To hear such a thing from her, I felt like I was the lucky one.
As I looked at her smiling face, I thought to myself: spending this leisurely time with Hatsune-san, in this slightly unusual atmosphere of traveling, was something I cherished.
I preferred this kind of experience to being transported to another world.

As we walked for a while, a poster on the wall of a building along the street caught my eye.
It was an announcement for the fireworks festival happening that evening.
“I want to go see this tonight,” Hatsune-san said, stopping in front of the poster.
“Ah, this is the one,” I said, recognizing it.
Ever since we booked the inn, Hatsune-san had been eager to attend this fireworks festival.
“Could it be that you’ve been to this festival before…?” I started, but then paused. “Hatsune-san?”
“Huh? Oh, what was that again?” Hatsune-san responded, clearly not paying attention to me.
It was obvious that her attention had been diverted elsewhere.
“Ah, I see… Is it this shop that caught your interest?” I asked.
“Yeah, actually,” she admitted.
What had caught her attention was the building that had put up the poster. It seemed to be a kimono shop.
“Look, this shop rents yukatas,” Hatsune-san pointed out, showing me a sign next to the fireworks poster.
The sign read something like “Highly recommended for festivals!”
“I see…” I murmured.
As I looked at it, I couldn’t help but imagine what Hatsune-san would look like in a yukata. She would probably look stunning in it.
“Yukata for Yakumo-kun… That might be a good idea,” she said with a thoughtful expression.
But it seemed her interest had shifted slightly.
“Oh, you want to dress me in one?” I asked.
“Yeah. If my favorite guy were to wear something different, I’d get excited too, you know?” she replied, a playful tone in her voice.
“I see,” I said.
If it were someone like Hatsune-san, of course, I could understand the excitement of seeing them in different clothes, but honestly, I wasn’t sure what was so appealing about watching me change. Still, if it made Hatsune-san happy, I was starting to feel like trying on a yukata myself.
The idea of wearing a yukata with Hatsune-san and heading to the fireworks festival together… it sounded like fun.
“Ah, I see. So you want to see me in a yukata?” Hatsune-san asked, catching on to my thoughts.
“Honestly, yes, I’d like to see that.”
“Hehe~~, really? Well then, let’s go inside the shop,” she said with a smile.
And so, Hatsune-san and I entered the kimono shop where we had randomly stopped by.

The inside of the shop was adorned with kimonos and traditional fabrics, creating a calm and serene atmosphere.
As soon as Hatsune-san and I entered, we quickly noticed something.
The rental fees were high.
For the shop’s standard plan, which involved renting yukatas for the night of the fireworks festival and returning them the next day, the cost for both of us would come close to 10,000 yen.
“What should we do…?” Hatsune-san murmured.
“If we spend 10,000 yen here, it feels like we won’t have enough to spend on other things,” I replied.
“Yeah… I’d feel bad if I couldn’t buy souvenirs for Mayuki-chan and my friends.”
We stood near the entrance, whispering quietly to each other.
“Welcome. I noticed you’ve been looking at the poster quite intently… Could it be that you’re interested in renting yukatas?” a soft-spoken woman greeted us.
She was dressed in traditional attire, probably in her 30s. Most of the shops around here seemed to be run by older people, so she seemed young in comparison.
“Well, we were thinking about it, but the price is…” I started, feeling a bit embarrassed. After all, we were still in high school.
“Oh, I see. If that’s the case, we can offer it to you for free,” she said with a gentle smile.
“Wait, really?” Hatsune-san immediately responded, intrigued by the offer.
“Yes. However, in exchange… would it be alright if we took some promotional photos of you?”
“Photos…?” I asked, unsure.
“Yes. We’d like to take a few photos, similar to the ones displayed there. You two would make a beautiful picture, so we’d love to have you as models.”
The shopkeeper pointed to several framed photos hanging on the wall. They showed people of all ages, dressed in traditional clothing. They were likely former customers of the shop.
“Hatsune-san, what do you think…?” I asked, looking at her.
Hatsune-san tilted her head slightly, waiting for my decision.
It was a great offer—getting to wear a yukata for free. The idea of our photos being displayed in the shop felt a bit intimidating, though, especially since I had been a shy, introverted kid until recently. But more than that, I really wanted to see Hatsune-san in a yukata.
After thinking about it for a moment, I made my decision.
“Well, in that case, let’s accept the offer.”
I agreed to the shopkeeper’s terms.
