- Chapter 51: My Stepsister Wants To Be Like Hatsune-san.
My Stepsister Wants To Be Like Hatsune-san.
I arrived at the fruit parlor inside a shopping complex with Mayuki.
It’s a high-end store that supposedly has branches in prestigious department stores.
We were seated at a small table for two.
“Mm, this is happiness…!”
Mayuki, sitting across from me, was savoring her fruit parfait with a contented expression. When I saw the price of the parfait, which was lavishly decorated with melon, I was shocked.
Though it’s a token of appreciation, it was quite an expensive expense.
It was nearly the same price as the shirt I bought earlier.
Because of that, I could only afford the cheapest coffee.
“The sweets I eat with my Onii-chan’s money are so delicious. I should’ve had you treat me to more sooner.”
By “sooner,” she probably meant before I disappeared and came back.
It wasn’t until I returned from another world that Mayuki began talking to me regularly and asking for sweets.
“Mayuki, you’ve started talking to me more recently.”
“…Are you happy about that?”
“Of course, it’s better than being ignored. Although, the expenses are painful.”
“I see, so that’s how it is.”
With a small smile, Mayuki brought a spoonful of cream and melon to her mouth.
She seemed to be in a good mood, probably because she was finally able to enjoy a dessert that had always seemed out of reach.
“I regretted it when you disappeared,” she said.
“Regretted?”
“Yeah. Ever since I entered middle school, I kind of ignored you during my rebellious phase, but I wished I’d talked to you more. It’s not like… I hated you or anything.”
“I see.”
I was happy to hear from my sister that she didn’t hate me.
Still, today, Mayuki seemed unusually open about her feelings.
“So, when you came back, I decided I would act in a way that I wouldn’t regret… but…”
“But?”
“In the end, I realized that to you, I’m just your sister.”
“…? Oh, Mayuki, you are my sister.”
Even if our biological parents were different, Mayuki and I are siblings… I said this with that thought in mind.
However, her reaction was somewhat ambiguous.
“Hmm, that’s not quite what I meant,” Mayuki said, looking at me with a bit of confusion.
“Then what do you mean?”
“Hey, Onii-chan, what would you think if I said I wanted to be like Hatsune-san?”
Mayuki suddenly asked me that. The conversation seemed a bit off-track, almost like a riddle.
“Well… I can understand why you’d admire Hatsune-san. She’s an incredible beauty and she’s really smart, too.”
“Oh, so you’re bragging about her now…”
Mayuki gave me an exasperated look. It seemed I hadn’t given the answer she was hoping for. After a moment, she let out a sigh.
“Ha… yeah, I guess it’s fine being your sister for now. I like Hatsune-san, too.”
Mayuki smiled, looking somewhat deflated.
“I don’t really understand, but I’m just glad to hear that you and Hatsune-san are getting along well.”
“Oh, speaking of which, lately we’ve been chatting on LINE, and she’s even helped me with problems I didn’t understand while studying for entrance exams.”
“Really? That’s nice.”
I nodded, and Mayuki continued eating her parfait while talking.
“Mm… yeah, and I’ve been thanking her in my own way.”
“Thanking her how?”
“I’ve been sending her old photos of you.”
“Wait, old photos? You mean from when I was a kid…?”
“Yeah, that’s right.”
Mayuki gave me a look, as if asking if there was something wrong with that.
“When did you even get those photos?”
“I fot the photos from the pictures Dad took.”
“I’ve never heard about that…”
“Well, I never mentioned it.”
“So Hatsune-san didn’t know about this either?”
“Yeah, so… does that mean it’s our little secret, just between me and Hatsune-san?”
Mayuki showed me a smug smile.
“…But I meet Hatsune-san almost every day,” I said, trying to one-up her.
“Mm…”
My comment made Mayuki’s expression shift to one of dissatisfaction.
“…I want to hang out with Hatsune-san too.”
“Well, you’re a student preparing for exams, so you probably don’t have the time. I bet your summer lessons are keeping you busy.”
“There are days like today when I have free afternoons.”
Mayuki persisted, pressing the issue.
“Well, if that’s the case, why don’t you invite Hatsune-san?”
“Uh, well…”
Mayuki averted her gaze, looking somewhat embarrassed.
“…?”
“If it’s just me and Hatsune-san alone, I’d feel awkward, so I’d prefer if you came with us.”
Mayuki mumbled this quietly, her head down.
I understood now.
Today, Mayuki seemed unusually open with me. But… would it be awkward for a sister to tag along with a couple?
That thought crossed my mind for a moment, but I quickly dismissed it.
If Mayuki wants to come, I’m sure Hatsune-san would be happy to have her along.
I’ll invite Hatsune-san to hang out sometime during the summer break.
