It Seems That My Younger Stepsister, Mayuki, Doesn’t Want To Leave Me And Hatsune Alone.
I led Hatsune-san to my room.
“Wow, so this is Yakumo-kun’s room!” she exclaimed as she stepped inside, her eyes scanning the space in awe.
“I don’t think it’s that interesting to look at,” I replied.
My room was fairly ordinary. Aside from a bed and a study desk, the only notable things were a TV, which was mostly used for gaming, and a bookshelf filled with textbooks, a few manga, and novels. The only difference today was that I had cleaned thoroughly in preparation for Hatsune-san’s visit and pulled out a foldable table from storage for us to study together.
“Well, it’s my first time visiting a boy’s room. And to think it’s my boyfriend’s room… It’s kind of exciting!” she said with a grin.
“I guess that makes sense.”
It reminded me of the first time I visited Hatsune-san’s room, probably feeling just as curious back then.
“This room is full of your scent… but I guess that’s natural, considering it’s where you always are,” she said, sniffing the air playfully.
“Wait, do I smell that much?” I asked, slightly concerned.
“Not like that! It’s more of a comforting scent—one that makes you feel safe when you’re close to it.”
“Well, as long as you like it, I guess that’s fine.”
“I do, I really like it,” she replied with a warm smile.
When she said that so directly, it was hard not to feel flustered. I hoped she wouldn’t overdo it.
“Anyway, shall we start studying?” I suggested, trying to change the subject.
“Yeah, I would have liked to explore your room more, but… I guess that can wait for another time.”
Hatsune-san said this so casually, like she was already planning her next visit. While I was happy she wanted to come again, having her inspect my room too much would be… awkward. Not that I had anything to hide, but still.

Fifteen minutes later, Hatsune and I sat side by side at the table, focused on studying. Just as I was getting into a good rhythm, the door to my room suddenly opened with a click.
“Onii-chan, are you seriously studying… Oh, I guess you are.”
Mayuki, without any warning, entered the room, holding a tray.
“What did you think we were doing? And hey, at least knock when there’s someone over.”
“Yeah, yeah. I brought drinks and the cheesecake, so no complaining.”
Ignoring my words entirely, Mayuki walked over and placed the tray on the table.
“Thanks for bringing them, Mayuki-chan,” Hatsune said, expressing her gratitude.
“It’s no big deal. After all, you bought the cake for us, so this is the least I could do.”
“Still, you’re really thoughtful, Mayuki-chan,” Hatsune said with a gentle smile.
Mayuki, on the other hand, seemed a bit flustered by Hatsune’s warmth.
“I-It’s not about me. Also, is she fine with coffee?”
“Yes, coffee’s fine. And you can just call me Hatsune, not ’she’.”
Mayuki paused for a moment, considering it, before responding, “Then… Hatsune-san?”
Hatsune giggled softly.
“Why are you laughing? I did what you asked,” Mayuki pouted.
“It’s just… you said the exact same thing as when I asked Yakumo-kun to call me by my first name. It’s cute how alike you two are as siblings.”
“Hmph… I see. Well, fine. I’ll let it go then.”
For some reason, Mayuki relented surprisingly easily.
“Anyway, since Mayuki-chan brought us these treats, how about we take a break? We haven’t studied much yet, but a snack sounds nice,” Hatsune suggested, putting her pen down.
“Yeah, sounds good. Let’s take a short break before getting back to it,” I agreed.
The smell of freshly brewed coffee and the sight of the limited-edition cheesecake made the idea of a quick rest even more tempting.
We decided to take a break and enjoy the cheesecake that Hatsune had brought. However…
“Mayuki, why are you sitting between us?”
For some reason, Mayuki had wedged herself between Hatsune and me.
“Just felt like it,” she said casually, sitting there without a care in the world.
“More importantly, let’s eat already,” Hatsune added, seemingly unbothered by the situation.
Am I the only one who finds this weird? I mean, the table’s not that big, and with the three of us squeezed together, it’s pretty cramped.
“Alright, let’s dig in.”
I took a bite of the cheesecake. As expected from a limited-edition item from a famous shop, it was delicious. The sweetness was just right, not overpowering, and had a refined flavor.
“Mmmmmm!! It’s so good!!”
Next to me, Mayuki was practically melting from the taste of the cheesecake, savoring every bite.
“I’m glad you like it, Mayuki-chan,” Hatsune said, watching her with a warm smile.
Meanwhile, Mayuki was quickly devouring the cheesecake with an almost comical enthusiasm.
“Hmph! Well, it’s good, but it’s not like I’m that happy about it…”
“Really? I was so happy you liked it that I was going to share some of mine with you… but if you’re not that thrilled, maybe I’ll keep it for myself,” Hatsune teased with a playful smile.
“Wait, what? N-No, I mean…” Mayuki, who had been stubbornly holding her ground, suddenly looked crestfallen.
“Just kidding. Here, you can have some,” Hatsune said, offering her own portion of the cheesecake.
“R-Really? But… if I accept it, doesn’t that mean I’m admitting defeat…?”
“Do you not want it?”
“…I’ll take it.”
After a brief internal struggle, Mayuki finally gave in and accepted the cheesecake, looking both relieved and slightly embarrassed.
After finishing the cheesecake, Mayuki sighed contently before turning to Hatsune.
“By the way, I’m in my third year of middle school, so I’m a student preparing for entrance exams this year.”
“Oh, really? That sounds tough,” Hatsune responded kindly.
“Yes, and actually, my first-choice school is the high school you and my brother go to.”
“Really?! So, you might become my junior next year?” Hatsune’s eyes sparkled with excitement.
“That’s the plan, but I’m having trouble with some of my exam prep. If it’s okay, could you help me study as a senior? Or… is that too much to ask?” Mayuki asked, sounding apologetic.
I could tell something was off. Mayuki wasn’t the type to act so humble. She must be putting on an act. I couldn’t figure out why, though. Was she really that serious about her exams?
Still, Hatsune didn’t come here today to tutor Mayuki.
“I understand, but we’re also trying to study for our own tests. Maybe next time—”
“If it’s for Mayuki-chan, how can I say no? Leave it to me!” Hatsune cut me off with an enthusiastic grin.
“Thank you! I’ll go get my study materials. Oh, and, Onii-chan, can you clean up the dishes?” Mayuki said, slipping in her request before running off to grab her things.
She didn’t even wait for my response. That sister of mine sure knows how to boss me around. Still, she did bring the cake, so I guess cleaning up is the least I can do.
“Alright, I’ll take care of it.”
“Thanks, Yakumo-kun.”
“Actually, I should be the one thanking you for looking after my sister.”
“Hehe, Mayuki-chan is just too cute; I can’t help but spoil her a little,” Hatsune said with a soft smile.
That smile… I etched the image into my mind as I grabbed the tray with the dishes and left the room.
(Wait…?)
As I walked down the stairs to the kitchen, something hit me.
Since she got here, there hasn’t really been much time with just me and Hatsune alone.
