- Chapter 28: The Most Beautiful Girl In School Came To My House.
The Most Beautiful Girl In School Came To My House.
It was Saturday, just after noon, with the real test looming at the start of the week.
Today, Hatsune-san was coming over to my house.
I hadn’t told my family she was my girlfriend, only that “a classmate” would be visiting.
I went to pick her up at the nearest station.
I stood waiting for her to come through the ticket gate.
A few minutes later, the train arrived at the station.
Soon enough, people began trickling out of the gate.
“Ah.”
I spotted Hatsune-san almost immediately among them.
As expected of a beautiful girl—she stood out even in a crowd.
Hatsune-san noticed me as well.
Smiling, she waved with her right hand and walked toward me. In her left hand, she was holding a small white shopping bag.
“Ah, it’s Yakumo-kun!”
Today, she was dressed casually. I had seen her in loungewear a few times, but this was the first time I’d seen her all dressed up.
It was late June, and the temperature was rising, so she was wearing a light blue short-sleeved dress.
Overall, she gave off a calm vibe, but her shoulders were slightly exposed, adding a mature touch.
“What’s wrong…?”
“I just thought you looked really great.”
“Really? I’m glad you seem to like it, Yakumo-kun.”
Hatsune-san looked pleased.
“By the way, Yakumo-kun, I feel like I’ve seen that outfit before?”
That’s right.
I had put a little extra effort into my clothes today. I had bought a set of clothes similar to the ones she had dressed me in before.
I figured it was important to have at least one decent outfit for times like this, so I chose the one Hatsune-san had complimented.
“You seemed to like this kind of outfit before, so I thought I’d wear it again.”
“Fufuu~, is that so?”
“Hatsune-san, you look even happier than when I complimented your outfit.”
“When I see you adopting my style, it makes me happy. Maybe I should work even harder to influence your fashion sense~?”
She said this with a playful grin.
“…”
Her smile was so dazzling, I couldn’t even respond.
As someone who’s a bit of a pushover and socially awkward, I feel like a beautiful girl like Hatsune-san could have me wrapped around her finger without much effort.
“Oh, I guess that means I scored a point!”
Seeing my reaction, Hatsune-san looked even more pleased with herself.
“S-so, um… what’s in that box?”
I quickly changed the subject before she could tease me any further—my heart couldn’t take it.
“I heard your little sister likes sweets, so I thought I’d bring something for her.”
“Thanks for going out of your way. I think she’ll really like it.”
After that short exchange, Hatsune-san and I headed to my house. It was only a five-minute walk from the station.
When we arrived and I opened the front door, we were greeted by my stepsister, Mayuki.
(Is she… waiting for us here on purpose?)
I had hoped to sneak Hatsune-san up to my room before bumping into my family, but that plan was shot.
“Welcome back, Onii-chan. And the person next to you is… nice to meet you. I’m Ueno Mayuki, his little sister. Well, step-sister technically, but we’ve lived together for a long time.”
Mayuki’s greeting to Hatsune-san came with an oddly prickly attitude, and she even made a weird comment about our family.
Calling her the “person next to me” was a bit much. As her older brother, I figured I should step in and say something, but before I could—
Hatsune-san was smiling warmly.
“Nice to meet you, I’m Ichigaya Hatsune. Can I call you Mayuki-chan?”
Despite Mayuki’s coldness, Hatsune-san responded with friendliness. I was surprised—she used to be a shy, socially awkward loner, but here she was, handling the situation with ease.
“Hmm… call me whatever you like.”
Mayuki, still sulking, nodded reluctantly.
Just then, someone else appeared from the living room.
“Oh my, oh my!”
It was my mom.
“Yakumo mentioned he was bringing a classmate, but I never imagined it’d be such a cute girl!”
My mom, often told she looks young for her age, walked toward the entrance, giving Hatsune-san a thorough look. I guess I couldn’t blame her for being shocked—after all, I had never brought anyone over, not even a female friend, and suddenly here I was with a beautiful girl.
Still, could she not make such a big deal out of it? It was embarrassing.
“Oh, are you Yakumo-kun’s mother? I’m Ichigaya Hatsune. It’s true that we’re classmates, but recently, I’ve been seeing Yakumo-kun romantically as well.”
“Oh really! So Yakumo finally has someone like that in his life… If I’d known from the start, I’d have prepared something special to welcome you!”
My mom exclaimed in exaggerated surprise, looking almost as if she was scolding me.
“I didn’t explain because I didn’t want it to turn into a big deal.”
I retorted, though at least the issue of how to introduce Hatsune-san was now resolved, so I’ll count that as a win.
“Fuufuu~. Just the thought of you preparing something is more than enough. But as a small token of appreciation, please accept this,” Hatsune-san said with a smile as she handed over the white box she had been carrying.
“Oh my, what a thoughtful young lady. What could this be?” my mother said, clearly impressed.
“I had a feeling… is that from the famous pastry shop owned by that renowned pastry chef?” Mayuki, not my mother, was the one showing real interest.
“Yeah. I heard you like sweets, Mayuki-chan, so I got their most famous cheesecake.”
“Wait, the cheesecake that’s only available in a batch of 50 per day and sells out fast?”
“Exactly,” Hatsune-san confirmed.
“Wow, Hatsune-san, you’re such a wonderful person…!”
Mayuki was visibly excited about the gift—until she snapped back to her usual self.
“Hmph! Don’t think you can win me over just because you brought some sweets!”
She glared at Hatsune-san, adopting a prickly attitude once again. Was she trying to play the role of a strict sister-in-law? Because it seemed to me that her resolve was wavering the moment the cheesecake was mentioned.
“We’re planning to study for the upcoming test, so is it alright if we head upstairs?” I chimed in, now that the greetings and gift exchange were done.
“Oh, of course! It wouldn’t do to leave a guest standing in the entryway for too long. Take your time, Hatsune-san.”
“And Onii-chan, don’t do anything weird!” Mayuki added, as both she and my mom took the cheesecake and disappeared into the living room.
“Your little sister is really adorable. I’m kind of jealous,” Hatsune-san said gently, watching Mayuki’s retreating figure, even though she had been acting a bit rebellious.
