The Rice Balls Made By A Beautiful Girl Holds Special Value.
The boys’ soccer team of Class 2-3 smoothly won the morning matches.
It was just about noon.
During the sports festival, matches are constantly being held on the field and in the gym, so everyone takes lunch breaks whenever there’s a gap between games.
I had about thirty minutes until my next match, so I made plans to have lunch with Hatsune-san during this break.
Normally, I eat the bento my parents make, but today I didn’t bring one.
(Hatsune-san said in her message yesterday, “Don’t bring a bento tomorrow. Just look forward to it,” didn’t she?)
So, I’d been looking forward to something since this morning.
Since both of us had matches right up until noon, we agreed to meet in the classroom of Class 2-3.
“Yakumo-kun, sorry to keep you waiting!”
Hatsune-san arrived at my seat, where I’d been waiting a little ahead of her.
“I tried my best, but we lost…”
“That’s too bad.”
“Yeah… but it was fun. I feel like I got closer to the others on the team.”
Hatsune-san had been playing in the girls’ basketball tournament.
Recently, she’d been practicing more with the girls in our class, and it seemed like she was gradually making more friends.
“How did your match go, Yakumo-kun?”
“We won again.”
“So, if you win three more times, you’ll be the champions.”
“Yeah, that’s right.”
In the afternoon, we had the quarterfinals and semifinals left, and then the final match against the sports-specialty class, led by the soccer team.
Of course, that’s only if we keep winning.
“I lost, but I’ll be cheering you on from now on, Yakumo-kun!”
Hatsune-san clenched her fist in a show of enthusiasm.
“Thanks. I’ll give it my best.”
I had planned to take it easy, but with her cheering me on, I found myself saying that out loud.
“Alright, let’s fuel up before your next match.”
“You told me not to bring a bento, but what’s the plan?”
“Come on, Yakumo-kun, you’ve already figured it out, haven’t you?”
Hatsune-san grinned mischievously in response to my question.
“Well, I had a feeling.”
“So, how about this? I made a homemade bento, and I’ve got one for you too.”
“I’d love to eat it.”
I answered without hesitation.

Today, I decided to have lunch outside for a change of pace.
That’s how I ended up in the courtyard with Hatsune-san. We sat together on a bench, spreading out the bento between us.
“I figured you’d be busy with the sports festival, so I made something easy to eat.”
Hatsune-san had brought a picnic basket, the kind you’d take on an outing. Inside were rice balls and various finger foods.
“Wow…”
“Uh, Yakumo-kun, are you the type of person who gets bothered by eating rice balls made by someone else?”
As I was admiring the spread, Hatsune-san asked me.
“Not at all, I welcome it.”
“O-Oh, that’s good then.”
Surprised by my unusually quick response, Hatsune-san blinked a few times. I mean, when a beautiful girl makes you rice balls, that alone adds extra value. And these were handmade by Hatsune-san. There aren’t many guys who’d turn that down.
“Mind if I dig in?”
“Go ahead.”
“Thanks, let’s eat!”
I picked up one of the rice balls and took a bite.
“Mmm, it’s delicious.”
“Thanks! But, I mean, rice balls taste the same no matter who makes them.”
“No, it’s important that you made these rice balls.”
“R-Really? You’re exaggerating, Yakumo-kun.”
Though she said that, she didn’t seem too displeased.
“Alright, I’ll try the side dishes too.”
The side dishes—karaage, tamagoyaki, and others—each had a toothpick stuck in them, making it easy to eat without chopsticks.
“This is great too. I especially like the sweet flavor of the tamagoyaki.”
“Oh, I’m glad! Does your family make sweet tamagoyaki?”
“Yeah, it started because my sister prefers it sweet, but now I can’t imagine eating anything but sweet tamagoyaki.”
“Haha, looks like we’re a good match, Yakumo-kun!”
It seems Hatsune-san also prefers her tamagoyaki on the sweeter side.
As we continued chatting, we both made our way through the bento.
“Phew… Thanks for the meal. That was really delicious.”
“You’re welcome! But honestly, I want to cook something even better for you next time, so how about coming over to my place for a meal?”
Hatsune-san had just invited me over to her house.
The last two times I went over to her house… well, those were pretty memorable occasions, to say the least. The first time, I lost my virginity, and the second time… we did it again.
This time, though… surely, it doesn’t mean anything like that, right? But then again, there was that selfie she sent me the other day, so maybe…
“…? What’s wrong, Yakumo-kun? You’ve gone quiet.”
“Oh, uh, it’s nothing.”
For now, I decided to set aside the whole selfie situation. After all, getting invited over just for a meal at Hatsune-san’s house is a special experience on its own.
“I’d love to come, but I feel bad always being the one treated. It’s not fair to you.”
“You really don’t have to worry about that.”
“No, I can’t just take advantage of your kindness like that.”
“Really? Well then, I’d be happy if you could do something to thank me in return soon.”
Hatsune-san playfully asked for a favor in return.
“A thank-you, huh… Yeah, I’ll think of something.”
“Fufu~, I’m looking forward to it.”
She smiled shyly, and for a moment, I was content, basking in the happiness of this peaceful time together.
But that moment didn’t last long. Suddenly, a guy appeared before us, interrupting our quiet lunch in the courtyard.
“Hey, Ichigaya-san. Long time no see. Looks like you’ve just finished lunch, right?”
He seemed polite enough on the surface, wearing a friendly smile, but he completely ignored me and only greeted Hatsune-san.
That guy was none other than the ace of the soccer team, Kawasaki Raito.
