The Most Beautiful Girl In High School Is Watching The Introverted Guy.
As we spent a meaningful practice period, the teamwork among my classmates steadily improved. Before I knew it, June had arrived, and we were faced with the day of the sports tournament.
On the morning of the event, I was wearing my gym uniform and standing in front of the whiteboard placed next to the soccer field with my classmates who would be participating in soccer. We had come to check the posted tournament bracket.
“Well, what’s important is the tournament pairing,” I said.
“Yeah, that’s right…”
I nodded in response to Shiina, who had addressed me. My classmates were likely hoping for pairings that would make it easier to aim for a higher rank. However, I was thinking differently.
(If I stand out too much by winning too many times, it might raise suspicions. Ideally, we would face the sports elite class early on, pull off a miraculous victory, and then lose in the next match in a way that seems unbelievable…)
While pondering this, I focused my gaze on the tournament bracket. My ideal scenario quickly crumbled. Our class, 2-3, and the class with good sports players, filled with members of the soccer club, were positioned at opposite ends of the bracket.
“Oh, lucky! We’re on the opposite side from the sports class,” one of my classmates exclaimed.
“That means we’ll only face regular opponents until the finals…” another added.
“We’ll likely have plenty of opportunities to face third-years, but with our current level, we can probably win against them.”
My classmates were pleased with the relatively favorable pairing. Meanwhile, I felt a complex mix of emotions.
(Hold on. Does this mean that winning against the soccer club, which leads the sports special class, equals victory for us?)
Winning against the soccer club, which has the level of talent to compete in national tournaments, would inevitably draw attention. It would have been better for us to lose at a suitable point so that people would think, “Their victory over the soccer club was just a fluke.”
(Well, if I play a role that doesn’t stand out, maybe my cheat skills won’t be exposed.)
I wanted to avoid a situation where my powers, which I had brought back from another world, would be revealed and exploited by those driven by greed. I had learned from my years in that other world that openly flaunting my abilities could lead to troublesome situations.
(Oh, and here I was forgetting about it, but I just remembered something unpleasant…)
Even though I had gained superhuman physical abilities and numerous cheat skills in the other world, my life there wasn’t all fun and games. In fact, it felt like I experienced more unpleasant moments. The fact that I had been able to forget about that until recently was indeed…
(It’s probably because I’m spending time with Hatsune-san and feeling fulfilled right now…)
That’s why I thought I didn’t want anyone to spoil this new life I had gained. Especially if it was someone who completely disregarded Hatsune-san’s feelings.
“Oh, Ueno-kun, you seem really pumped up too, huh?”
Shiina spoke to me while I was lost in thought.
“Really? Did it look that way?”
“Yeah. It kind of seemed like a fighting spirit was welling up in your eyes.”
Fighting spirit from my eyes? What does that even mean? Well, I guess…
“I suppose I might be a bit more motivated than usual.”
As I replied, I couldn’t shake off the unease brewing inside me. The thought of being thrust back into that past, filled with challenges and hardships, made me want to protect the calm I had found with Hatsune-san.
My classmates, meanwhile, were bubbling with excitement and anticipation for the tournament. As they discussed strategies and match-ups, I tried to blend in and maintain my cool demeanor. I knew I had to play my part well, keeping my abilities hidden while also ensuring the team remained motivated.
While I was worried about drawing attention to myself, I also felt a strange sense of responsibility for my classmates. They were counting on me, even if they didn’t fully realize the extent of my influence. I had to guide them without standing out too much, leading them to victory while keeping my secrets safe.
As we headed to the field for our first match, I took a deep breath, pushing aside my worries. It was time to focus on the game and enjoy the moment, especially since I had Hatsune-san by my side.
***
Thirty minutes later.
It was time for our first match to begin.
Our opponents were third-year students from the general studies program.
They weren’t as formidable as the sports special class, but being a year older, they were generally slightly bigger than us.
After lining up in the center of the field to exchange greetings, both teams dispersed to their respective positions.
My position was central midfield, specifically a defensive midfielder, or as it’s often referred to, a “holding midfielder.”
(Sounding good, but in a ragtag team like this for a sports festival, it’s just a position where the leftover players kind of stand around.)
In other words, it was the usual spot for someone like me, the introverted type.
While I felt that I had naturally settled into this position, when the match began, I effectively fulfilled my role as a holding midfielder.
“Ueno-kun, pass it over here!”
“Sure!”
“Oh no!? Ueno, stop that guy!”
“Got it!”
I was playing the unsung hero, contributing on both offense and defense.
I delivered accurate passes to help my teammates push forward and create scoring opportunities.
When the opponents attacked, I switched to defense, regained possession of the ball, and passed it back to my teammates.
This cycle continued, allowing me to subtly control the game.
(Being a forward scoring goals or a goalkeeper making flashy saves would draw too much attention. This approach was definitely the right choice.)
By playing in a less conspicuous position and becoming the pivot for both offense and defense, I was able to keep the score balanced, neither taking too many goals nor conceding too many.
I was committed to winning moderately.
(Well, so far my involvement hasn’t been too significant…)
Thanks to my enhanced physical abilities from my skills and our daily practice, we had better teamwork than the other classes, which kept us in the lead throughout the match.
As the match progressed, we maintained our advantage and ultimately won our first game against the third years with a score of 3-0.
After the match, my classmates, who had been cheering from the sidelines, welcomed us back with cheers.
…Well, most of them headed towards Shiina and the other extroverts, but one person rushed over to me first.
It was Hatsune-san.
“Yakumo-kun, great job! You really shone out there!”
Hatsune-san praised me with a smile.
Since it was the sports festival, she was also dressed in gym clothes, which made her previously hidden curves more noticeable compared to when she wore her uniform.
“No, I didn’t do much. I didn’t score any goals; that was all the others.”
“That’s not true! You were like the backbone of the team, doing amazing work on both offense and defense!”
“Well… I can’t deny that, but Hatsune-san, you seem surprisingly knowledgeable about soccer?”
In response to my question, Hatsune-san tilted her head.
“Why do you think that? I was just watching you, Yakumo-kun.”
“…I see.”
In front of Hatsune-san’s innocent smile, I felt my body temperature rise sharply.
Thinking about it again, Hatsune-san is incredibly beautiful.
To protect the days when I can see this smile, I need to do my best in the upcoming matches.
…I might be easily motivated if being praised by Hatsune-san gets me fired up right away.
