Locking Eyes With The Most Beautiful Girl In The School.
The next morning, I began to feel the reality of it all.
I would reclaim my youth alongside Hatsune.
At this point, I was already in too deep.
I had been a social outcast and had fallen behind after disappearing since the beginning of my second year.
I had given up on a typical high school life, but I felt that I had changed somewhat.
I graduated from being a virgin after meeting Hatsune and got to know her better.
I felt a little more confident in myself.
Waking up in my bed that morning, I was fired up with those thoughts.
I would go to pick up Hatsune again today, and we would head to school together.
That part was good.
But everything after that was just like before.
Before class started, in the classroom of 2-3,
while my classmates gathered in groups and chatted happily,
Hatsune and I sat at our desks.
We were at the back row by the window, seated next to each other.
“…”
“…”
Hatsune and I were silent.
We had made that arrangement on the way to school.
In order to enjoy our youthful days, we needed to get along with our classmates.
So, we chose a waiting strategy.
Having both lived as loners until now, we didn’t know how to interact with our classmates.
Even so, Hatsune and I were, in a way, the talk of the town.
The previous scandal might be a sensitive subject, but we had told our classmates that we were dating before that incident.
To them, we must have appeared to be an unusual couple, so I thought someone would eventually approach us out of curiosity.
However, no one came to talk to us.
“…”
“…”
What should I make of this?
I glanced at Hatsune, who was sitting to my right.
Our eyes met.
“Hmmm…”
Hatsune wore a troubled expression.
It seemed she had come to the same realization as me: no one was approaching us, and we had no plan of action.
(But it’s too early to give up…!)
First, we needed to gather information. Some of our classmates were clearly glancing our way, curious. What were they thinking?
I decided to eavesdrop.
“Wasn’t his name Ueno? He and Ichigaya-san are just staring at each other in silence.”
“They totally look like they’re lost in their own world this morning…”
“I’m so jealous! Getting to hang out with a girl that pretty…”
Apparently, our classmates thought Hatsune and I were in our own little world and didn’t want to intrude.
Wait—was staying silent actually backfiring on us?
“…”
“…”
I looked at Hatsune again, and once again, our eyes met. From her expression, it seemed she had heard the same conversation, and she looked equally frustrated. But even if we started talking now, I doubted it would change the situation.
In other words, we were out of options. At least, that’s what I thought until—
“Good morning, everyone!”
A bright, cheerful voice rang out as a girl entered the classroom.
“Morning!”
“Hey, good morning, class rep!”
Everyone, regardless of gender, greeted her warmly. She was Senkawa Asuha, the class representative, or “iinchou” as everyone called her. She had been absent for a while, sick since last Wednesday.
“Class president, have you recovered from your cold?”
“Yes, thanks to you.”
The class president is a girl known for her distinctive ponytail, with brown hair tied at the back. She’s bright, approachable, and naturally takes on a leadership role, treating everyone equally.
Her seat is just one ahead of mine, so it was inevitable that she’d make her way over to us.
“Good morning, Ueno-kun. Ichigaya-san.”
Even though we were in the corner of the classroom, she greeted us warmly.
“…Good morning.”
“G-Good morning!”
While I responded quietly, Hatsune’s voice cracked a little, probably out of nervousness.
“I’ve heard the rumors about you two. I was worried as the class president since neither of you seemed to have anyone to talk to, but it seems you’ve found someone you get along with, which is a relief.”
The class president is the kind of person who dreams of everyone in the class getting along. In other words, she cares about even the loners like Hatsune and me, making an effort to talk to us. For people like us, she was a much-appreciated presence.
“Actually, while I was resting with my cold, I thought a lot about how the two of you could better fit in with the rest of the class.”
She sat down at her desk, placed her bag on the table, and turned around to continue the conversation.
“I-Is that so?”
Hatsune, though a bit awkward, responded to keep the conversation going. Perhaps she saw this as a chance to get closer.
“Yes! And I came up with a great idea.”
“A great idea…?”
“The sports tournament is coming up soon, so let’s use it to strengthen our class’s unity!”
The class president spoke confidently, as Hatsune tilted her head in curiosity.
“U-Unity…”
Hatsune looked like she was getting a little excited.
“This afternoon, we’ll be deciding which events we’ll participate in, so both of you should think about what you’d like to join!”
Just as the class president said that, the morning warning bell rang.
The sports tournament.
Now that she mentioned it, I remembered that event.
Up until last year, it wasn’t something I could really enjoy.
But maybe, with how things are now, I could approach it with a slightly different mindset.
