Chapter 89: Arriving at the Village

The next day after wiping out the goblin nest, we finally arrived safely at the village we had planned to visit by the evening. 

“Halt! What business do you have in this village?”

The village was surrounded by a wooden fence and there were two female guards. They stopped Tia-san’s carriage, since her carriage was at the front. 

“These people are adventurers. They’re the ones that saved us.”

“Madre! Edward! You two are still alive?!”

“Yes. We got attacked by a group of goblins on our way back from the capital though…”

“I see… But still! I’m glad you two are safe! What about Riede and Mari—no, never mind. Adventurers, thank you for saving them. I will call the village chief here, please wait a moment.”

“Ah, okay.”

Immediately grasping the situation, one of the gatekeepers quickly went to fetch the village chief and other villagers. Then, Tia-san and the others showed the villagers their guild card. After they confirmed that we were indeed a group of adventurers, we were then escorted to the village chief’s house. By the way, the village chief was pretty old. She should be around 60s. 

“I see… So the other two and the rest of the female guards are already…”

“Unfortunately, yes…”

“No, no! We are truly fortunate to know Madre and Edward have returned safely! We thought all of them were already dead, but turns out we still have 2 survivors! Adventurers, thank you so much!”

“No, no. We simply did what we should do as adventurers.”

Elmie was the one that spoke to the village chief as our representative.

“Their families are overjoyed to know they’ve returned safely. Truly, thank you very much!”

Madre-san and Edward-san were now recuperating at their homes with their families. Although High Dispel had restored their sanity, but I could tell that they were still exhausted mentally. Their families were deeply grateful to know they had returned safely. They hugged them tightly while crying tears of happiness and thanked us repeatedly for their safe return. 

However, at the same time, there were also some villagers that broke down in tears upon learning the fact that we had failed to rescue the other females. These people must be the relatives of the wives.

“But still, to think those goblins had built such a large nest so close to the road leading to the capital… The situation was really dangerous for travelers indeed.”

“Yes. If the nest had been left alone for longer, it would’ve grown larger and this village would’ve been overrun by the horde of goblins. Adventurers, thank you for destroying the goblin nest!”

The village chief and the villagers bowed their heads in gratitude to us again. Indeed, if a nest of that size were to grow, the goblin horde might eventually attack this village soon. While a single goblin wouldn’t pose as much of a threat, but a hundred goblins would definitely put this village at risk. Especially with the combination of high-ranking goblins like goblin mages and hobgoblins. A village this small wouldn’t be able to stand a chance against a big horde, unlike the capital.

“We’re only doing our duty as adventurers. We’ll make sure to report the destruction of the goblin nest to the Adventurers’ Guild to hand over the belongings of the female guards.”

Any discovery of a goblin nest had to be reported to the Adventurers’ Guild, so we would be sure to report our finding to the guild in Annick. Furthermore, we also had to hand over the belongings of the female guards to the guild. 

“Also, we’d like to buy several days worth of water and food if possible.”

“Of course. After all, you’ve saved Madre and Edward… You also have avenged our friends… As you can see, our humble village doesn’t have anything much to offer, but please feel free to take whatever you need.”

“Thank you.”

After that, we were guided to an empty house in the village. They gave us dinner and allowed us to sleep there. Sleeping in a house with a proper roof and all was so much better than sleeping in a tent. We were able to rest our fatigue away.

“Well then, thank you very much for your help.”

“No, no. We’re the ones who should be thanking you all for the water and food.”

“Not at all. Not only have you saved Madre and Edward, but Souma-sama has also treated the injured villagers. We are deeply grateful for all the help. I’m sorry for not being able to offer much in return.”

Before leaving the village this morning, I had used my healing magic to treat the injured in this village. Fortunately, there were only two people that were injured serious enough to require healing magic. As a way to show their gratitude for treating the injured and saving Madre and Edward, the villagers gave us plenty of water and food.

The people of this village didn’t seem very wealthy, so I decided to waive the treatment fees and told them I was testing my magic out. In return, they insisted on giving us plenty of supplies until our carriage was overflowing with it. 

“Please don’t worry about it. I’m stationed in Annick so if any of you were to get injured critically, please come to Annick. Of course, I will be charging my treatment fees properly when you do.”

“Yes. If it’s only 10 gold coins, we should be able to afford it! Ah~ I can’t believe that Souma-sama is the black-haired god that we’ve been hearing about!”

….During our journey from Annick to the capital, I came to know that my reputation had spread to every village and town around. 

“Souma-sama, everyone, thank you so much for everything!”

“We will never forget this kindness!”

“….Madre-san and Edward-san, I’m sure it’s still hard for you two to accept the reality, but please, stay strong.”

Even though the emotional wounds from losing their wives to goblins were still fresh on their heart,  but Madre-san and Edward-san had come all the way to the entrance of the village to see us off. 

“Yes! Thanks to everyone’s help, I’m able to return alive to reunite with my family again!”

“If I keep feeling depressed forever, I won’t be able to face my late wife in the afterlife. I’m grateful I was offered a second chance in life!”

I knew they must be still grieving, but they still tried to look their best and look forward for the future. Their eyes were all red and swollen, probably from crying all night. I was truly relieved from the bottom of my heart that I could help the two of them.
