Chapter 80: The Orphanage in the Royal Capital

“….This orphanage… It’s not very…. Clean, huh?”

“It looks worn-out if I may be honest….”

Yeah… Flora was right. To put it bluntly, the orphanage looked like it was in shambles. I thought the orphanages in the Royal Capital would be in better condition, but I guess I was wrong. Just like the orphanage in Annick, this orphanage also looked like it was on the verge of collapsing. In fact, no one would suspect anything if they said they had converted ruins or old buildings into orphanages. That was how dilapidated this building was. 

“Uwaaah~ Who are those people? They’re so cool!”

“Awesome! So many shiny armors!!”

We entered the orphanage and the children immediately gathered around us. Instead of feeling scared by Elmie and the other knights, they seemed to be intrigued at us instead. Just like Riche, the children in this orphanage also had the heart of steel.

This orphanage was mostly filled with girls, just like the orphanage in Annick. This wasn’t a surprise though, given this world had a higher ratio of females. The children in this orphanage looked thin too. It was clear to see that they didn’t have enough to eat. 

“We bought something to eat at the market. I will give it to you all, so please make sure to share with everyone, okay?”

“Really?! Amazing!”

“Yaaay! Thank you, beautiful onii-chan nd cool onee-chan!

We handed out the food we had bought at the market, like skewers, sausages, noodles, bread, along with many other stuff. We planned on donating to other orphanages as well, so we had bought a lot of food to go around. 

“Oh my? It seems we have visitors…. Hiii?! I-Is there something you need from us?”

An elderly woman came out from the orphanage. She must be the director of this orphanage. 

Yeah, her reaction wasn’t a surprise either. This was the kind of reaction I expected from an ordinary person upon seeing a group of knights in armor, along with strong-looking adventurers and a distinguished lady. 

“I’m sorry for suddenly barging here with so many people. We’ve come to donate food and money to the orphanage.”

“Really?! Thank you so much! I’m sorry, this place is dirty and cramped, but please, come on in!”

“Then, I’ll take up on your offer. Don’t worry, we won’t be staying for long.”

We followed the orphanage director inside. Just like what she had said, the inside was a bit cramped, but generally speaking, the inside looked a bit better than the orphanage in Annick. 

“Director-sensei! The food is really delicious!”

“It’s been so long since we last had meat!”

“You lot! Eat more quietly! My, I apologize for the noise!”

Since our group couldn’t fit in the director’s room, we were guided to the largest dining hall in the orphanage. We had five very young children joining us. They were eating the skewers and the other food we had just given to them.

“It’s better for children to be energetic than glum. Don’t worry about it. The noise doesn’t bother us at all.”

“Yeah! Being healthy and energetic are the most important things for children.”

Just like what Ferris and Flora said, being energetic was the most important thing for children. Although the children here were all thin, but I didn’t see any sign of abuse. They seemed to have a good relationship with the director too. After all, we couldn’t deny the fact that there were some corrupt orphanage directors that abused children or corrupted the money they received from the state to fill their own pockets. Hence why, I needed to visit the orphanage myself. I needed to assess the situation with my own eyes.

“What?! You’re planning on making regular donations?!”

I had received a significant amount of money as a reward for helping the town capture the Dark Guild and for healing the injured members of the raid team. The king had also rewarded me handsomely for treating Deva-san. It was a large sum of money that I couldn’t possibly accept half of it. I didn’t have any need for that much money anyway. And so, I planned on donating half of the money I had received to the orphanages in this town. I already had more than enough savings lined up and since I was living as a guest at Elmie’s house, I really didn’t need money that desperately. 

And so, just like in Annick, I also wanted to donate regularly to the orphanage in the Royal Capital. I knew there were plenty of other people in need besides orphans, but although it might sound hypocritical of me, I just liked seeing the smiles on those adorable children’s faces. Seeing the joy spreading in their faces made everything felt worthwhile. 

“Yes. Although the donation won’t come from me directly. The knights and the adventurers from the guild that will come to hand the donations.”

Since I had received a lot of money, I made a plan with the knight commander and Lorelei-san to give small regular donations to the orphanages. Donating a large sum all at once would overwhelm the director and might attract unwanted attention from fishy people after all. I had discussed this with Lorelei-san, the knight commander and the king herself. I knew no one would dare to engage in any fraudulent activities. 

“Ahh! I don’t even know how to express my gratitude to you…! Umm… Could you be the famous black-haired healer from Annick?”

“….”

That nickname really had spread all the way to the Royal Capital, huh…?

“That’s right. Souma is the one that has been treating the people in Annick for 10 gold coins!”

“I knew it! I’ve heard many rumors about you! They say you are equally kind to everyone, you can heal all kinds of injuries and you make generous donations to orphanages in Annick! Truly, your benevolence surpasses that of an ordinary human! You’re like the incarnation of a god!”

It seemed the rumors spreading in the Royal Capital had been exaggerated a lot. I had never cured anyone’s illness or restored their missing body parts before leaving Annick. Although I did share my knowledge on food and helped the orphanage open up a bakery, but I never donated a large sum of money in one go. 

Rumors really couldn’t be trusted, especially rumors that had been spreading like wildfire like this. The authenticity couldn’t be seen anymore.
