Chapter 73: Another Ability

Back at Annick, my healing magic also couldn’t heal people that were sick with a cold. It seemed even my healing magic as a male saint couldn’t cure illness. 

“…Souma-dono, there’s no need to feel discouraged. Deva-dono couldn’t heal himself either.”

“…Yeah, I understand. I’m fine.”

Although I said so, but truthfully, I was a bit disappointed. The old man in front of me looked so emaciated. He was breathing peacefully, as if he was in deep sleep. Of course, I wasn’t arrogant enough to think I could heal ALL injuries and illnesses. However, I had never seen someone getting so sick to the point they couldn’t even stay conscious. 

“Let’s return to the room we were in earlier.”

“….My apologies. I should’ve warned you beforehand about Deva-dono’s conditions.”

“No one is to blame for this. Deva-dono was simply unlucky. Of course, I couldn’t help but to wonder why such a noble person like him would be afflicted with such dreadful illness when there are so many more undeserving individuals in this world.”

I could sympathize with the king. Even back in my original world, whenever I saw someone suffering from serious illness on TV or in movies, I couldn’t help but to wonder why they needed to suffer when there were so many worse people living their life carefreely in the world. In fact, in this world, there were a lot of despicable people like the Dark Guild that used children for assassination. It was only natural for us to feel those people deserved to suffer instead. Frankly speaking, I was sure there were a lot of people who would be willing to sacrifice the lives of those despicable criminals from the Dark Guild in exchange for Deva-san’s life. 

Sometimes… Because of this, I found it hard to believe in gods or Buddhas. 

“Oops, I didn’t mean to make the mood turn glum. Anyway, there’s no need to dwell on it too much. Just forget about it. I’m sure Deva-dono would’ve preferred it that way.”

“Yes..”

“Souma, you’ve done what you could. It’s only natural that there are things that you can’t do.”

“That’s right. There’s no use worrying about things you can’t do, Souma.”

“Souma already did his best. Some things are just beyond anyone’s control.”

It was truly reassuring to know everyone had my back. Also, hearing their words of comfort helped me to feel a bit better. 

“Since everyone is already here, how about joining me for a meal? The food at the inn where Souma-dono and the others are staying is good, but the meals in the castle are quite good too, you know.”

“That’s right. Souma, how about we accept their offer since we’re already here?”

“Thank you. However, before that, there are a few things I’d like to ask.”

Flora said I had done my best, but that wasn’t exactly true. I hadn’t done my best. Not yet.

“We’ve gathered books from all over the world, covering all kinds of subjects. It’s not an exaggeration to say that this is the place with the most books in the country.”

Colette-san guided us to the Royal Castle’s library. After receiving the king’s permission, she led me here and indeed, there were a lot of books in this place. The library was bigger than the national library back in my original world. 

“This is going to take a while…”

Just as Ferris-san said, it would take a considerable amount of time to check this vast library. 

“Then, I will take my leave. When you’re done, please speak with the person standing guard in front of the room.”

“Yes, thank you.”

With that, Colette-san left the library. Now, only me, Elmie, Flora, Ferris and the library staff remained. The fact that they allowed us to come into this place where they stored a lot of valuable books showed that they trusted us deeply. 

Now… The reason why we came to this library was to find any clues that could help us cure Deva-san’s illness.

“Souma, you just want us to bring you the book that we can’t read, right?”

“Yes, that’s right.”

Elmie and the others began bringing me books after books. I began looking through each book. 

Before coming to this library, I had talked with the king about this illness called ‘romak disease’ and Deva-san’s symptoms. Actually, as a normal high school boy, I didn’t have the modern medical knowledge with me. I didn’t know how to treat this romak disease either. This country might not have the knowledge to treat Deva-san’s illness. However, maybe the cure actually existed in another country or perhaps… In the past. Just like what Colette-san said, this library had a wide variety of historical books too. 

So, while the chances were slim to none, but it might be possible that within one of these books, we could find the cure for romak disease.

“….History books, cook books, educational books.. None of these are what I’m looking for.”

I went through the books that Elmie and the others couldn’t read one by one. 

“Oh! A book about diseases and medicines! Maybe this is the one…! ……No, it’s no. There’s nothing about romak disease or anything with similar symptoms.”

I read through books related to diseases, medicines and other medical topics in hope to find anything mentioning romak disease. 

“Not this one either.”

It was a battle against perseverance. Colette-san told me that this library housed many books that hadn’t been translated yet. The older books were stored at the back and I was advised to handle them with care.

Little by little, the books that I had finished reading began to pile up. However, we still had a lot of books in this library that Elmie and the others couldn’t read. 

“Souma, how about if we call it a day?”

“Yeah. You’ve read a lot of books. Let’s stop here today.”

However, Deva-san’s condition looked really severe. Besides, we had to look through the books in the city’s bookstores as well, not just the books in the library. We really needed to cover all of our bases, just in case the clue for helping Deva-san might be hidden in those books. 

“…Hmm… Just a little bit more… What about this book?”

Besides books about medicine, I also looked through biographies and books about the job system.
