Chapter 4: Getting Caught up With the Adventurer’s Guild (?)

They handed the female bandits over to the guards at the gate and took care of the formalities needed to enter the town. Flora parted ways with us. She went with the guard to handle the bandits. Maybe she would be assisting in the interrogation with her ability to discern lies. 

Under normal circumstances, any visitor needed to pay a toll or had a pass. However, since I didn’t have a pass nor a single coin to my name, Elmie and the others paid on my behalf. I needed to remember the amount they had paid for me so I could thank them properly later.

“Uwaaah!~”

Inside the city walls, a sight that could only be called as another world was unfolded before me. There was a wide road bustling with a large crowd of people and horse-drawn carts moving back and froth right after passing through the gate. The people on the road were dressed in a variety of outfits. There were people that looked like merchants carrying large loads on their backs, people who appeared to be farmers carrying plenty of produce, some people who appeared to be knights and adventurers wearing armor. There were also beastkin with cat ears sprouting from their heads and long tails swishing back and forth. There were also dog beastkin that looked like a dog save for their bipedal features. There were dwarves too, as could be seen from their short stature. It seemed various non-human races also lived in this town. 

Just like what I had heard from Elmie and the others earlier, most people on the street were woman. And for some reason… Many of these women kept stealing glances at me…. I wondered why….

“Men with black hair are rare in this area. Also, Souma, your face is cute and… You’re also wearing my clothes right now.”

Elmie explained upon noticing the confusion on my face. 

I see. Indeed. Now that I took a better look, most of the women had blonde or brown hair here. So in their eyes, I was like a foreigner woman with a rare hair color like green, walking around town nonchalantly wearing a man’s dress shirt… Yes. That would definitely attract people’s attention. 

And while “cute” might be deemed as an acceptable compliment for men in this world, but I didn’t feel happy hearing that. After all, back in my original world, I was often told that I looked weak for a guy. 

“For now, we need to report the completion of our quest, the bandits we had captured and tell the Adventurers’ Guild about Souma.”

“Ah, right. Thank you very much for helping.”

Oooh! So this world also has an Adventurer’s Guild! How exciting!

Ding ding!

We entered a large building in the city with a signboard that read “Adventurers’ Guild”. Although the letters weren’t written in Japanese, but for some reason my mind interpreted the letter as Japanese.

“Oh, if it isn’t Elmie and Ferris! Flora isn’t with you guys? Let’s drink together tonight! By the way…. Who’s that cute guy you have with you?”

“Albel, let’s save the drinking for another time. As for this boy, we found him lost just before the entrance of the forest so we took him with us.”

The woman called Albel seemed to be a cat beastkin. She had fluffy brown ears on top of her head and a magnificent long tail behind her. Even though it was still daytime, but it seemed she had been drinking quite a lot. She looked quite tipsy. 

“Well, you’ve got it rough, huh Cute Guy? But you know, life is full of ups and downs. Good things are bound to come eventually! Anyway, what do you say? Care to have a go with me later?~”

“Wha-What?!”

Wha-What the heck is this woman saying all of a sudden?!

Taking a second look at Albel, I noticed she was a pretty boyish woman, with short hair, sharp eyes and a cool face. 

….Yeah. I’m all for it. In fact, I’d be willing to beg on my knees if needed. I’d really love to take her up on that offer! Given that I’ve often been called effeminate and weak, she’s definitely the kind of woman who’s out of my league. If I could have a chance at her, I’d be more than willing to jump into the offer!

“Hey!”

“Ouch!”

“Stop pulling those stupid jokes on a guy! Sorry about that, Souma. Women like her likes to pull stupid jokes like that without thinking first, but you can just ignore them. She’s not bad a person, so please forgive her for this.”

Ferris said after she lightly tapped Albel on the head with her large shield. 

…So it was a joke. Well, of course. There’s no way a woman of her caliber would say something like that to a guy like me.

“I almost took it seriously for a second there, especially because Albel-san is really beautiful. Still, alcohol isn’t good for your body. It’s best if you drink in moderation, Albel-san.”

Even if it was just for a moment, I got to experience a fleeting dream. I mustered the best smile I could give to thank Albel-san for giving me a glimpse of that beautiful dream. 

“….”

Huh? For some reason, the Adventurers’ Guild fell silent. 

“Cute…”

“So sweet…”

“How beautiful….”

…..What is happening here? For some reason, all the female adventurers are staring at me…

“Wha-… Be-Beautiful?! Yo-You dune! I’m… I’m not beautiful or anything! You idiot!”

For some reason, Albel-san became so flustered. Her face turned bright red. But still, even when she was flustered like this, Albel-san looked incredibly cute!

“No, Albel-san, you’re truly beautiful! Your sharp eyes… Your cool and dignified face… Someone as beautiful as you are definitely way out of my league.”

“-!! UWAHHHHHH!!!”

Turning even redder than before, Albel-san suddenly bolted out of the Adventurers’ Guild.

“….Quite the heartbreaker, aren’t you?”

“Souma, what a bad guy you are.”

….How did things turn out this way?
