Chapter 23: Securing the Baker

“Good day…”

“Yes, welcome… Wait… That black hair… Are you the god everyone in town has been talking about recently?! Wha-Wha-What brings you to this humble place?!”

….Unfortunately, my reputation had spread far and wide. 

“Nice to meet you. My name is Souma. Are you Doldia-san?”

“Ye-Ye-Ye-Yes! May I know what brings you to this modest, rundown bakery….?”

…The manager of this bakery was extremely humble for some reason. Doldia-san was a slightly chubby woman, she looked like she was in her 40s or 50s. While it was true that the shop wasn’t large, but it wasn’t shabby or rundown as she made it out to be. The inside was quite clean and nice. 

“Marvin-san, the director of the orphanage, recommended you to me. I have something I’d like to discuss with you.”

“Ye-Yes! Bu-Bu-Bu-But this place is unworthy to have a discussion at, so please, come inside first!”

She led us to what I assumed was the staff room at the back of the bakery. Since there were four of us (all members of Blue Eternity naturally also came along with me), the room felt a bit cramped. 

“Ma-Ma-May I know what brings male god himself to come to this humble place?”

“Allow me to get straight to the point. I’d like to teach you how to make a new kind of bread and in exchange, I’d like to borrow one of your bakers.”

“A-A new kind of break?”

“Yes. This is the bread I baked today. I’m still an amateur in the baking department, so I apologize for any shortcomings beforehand.”

I had brought the best-looking loaf out of the batch of bread I had baked as a test this morning. 

“Ah… The bread that male god himself baked… Well then, pardon my discourtesy… Mmhm?! Wha-What is this?! It’s so incredibly soft! Is this really a bread?!”

“Yes. This bread becomes soft and fluffy because I added a new ingredient to the usual ingredients for bread people often used. The new ingredient practically cost nothing, but adding it to the recipe will definitely improve the bread currently sold in your bakery.”

“Thi-This is amazing! I’ve never eaten such soft and delicious bread before! We could definitely sell this bread as it is!”

“Thank you for the compliment. Receiving praise from a professional like you truly makes me more confident in my bread. And so, in exchange for teaching you this new recipe, I’d like to borrow one of your bakers to teach the people at the orphanage how to bake bread until they can manage to do it on their own.”

“M-My…. I’ve never heard a better offer… But, may I know what makes you choose this small, rundown bakery?”

“I heard from Marvin-san that the bread from your bakery is delicious. I heard you always put your hearts into each and every bread and that you occasionally donate bread to the children at the orphanage. Considering the nature of this new project, I believe someone like you is the best candidate I can hope for.”

To be honest, the main reason why I chose this bakery was because this bakery was relatively small. If I taught this recipe to the biggest bakery in town, the orphanage wouldn’t stand a chance. It might sound a bit rude, but I preferred to work with a smaller bakery first. Before coming here, I had gone to the orphanage first to get permission to bake and sell bread there. Then, I asked the director and Mina-san if they knew any bakery that would suit our preference. 

They recommended this bakery to me. Not only did this bakery occasionally donate bread to the orphanage, but this bakery perfectly met the conditions I had in mind. If I was going to teach someone how to make this new bread, it should be to someone kind who was already doing good deeds periodically. 

“I-I see! I must thank Marvin-san later! Thank you very much for trusting me! I gladly accept your offer!”

“Thank you very much! I look forward to working with you!”

I shook hands with Doldia-san. With this, I had secured a baker for the orphanage. 

After that, I gave the natural fruit yeast I had left to Marvin-san and taught him how to make the yeast and the science behind bread fermentation. He said he wanted to experiment with various fruits and fermentation times until the orphanage was ready to bake the bread for sale. If Marvin-san would take his time to experiment on his own, he would definitely be able to make a better bread than I. After all, I was only an amateur who didn’t have any deep knowledge about baking. 

Now that I could entrust the bread researching part to Marvin-san, it was time for me to secure the stall and the oven for the orphanage. 

“….What a magnificent view…”

I had seen various buildings ever since I arrived in this town, but this building was easily the second largest building I had seen after the Adventurers’ Guild. However, unlike the Adventurers’ Guild, this particular building had a large chimney with black smoke billowing into the sky. 

“This is Delgart Workshop, one of the largest smithies in this area. They take on various orders, not just weapons and armor.”

“This big shield of mine was made by them!”

“They’re very popular in this town. They have a reputation for always doing their work meticulously.”

“Well, since we’re already here, maybe we can at least look around first… But…. Maybe I should reconsider? This doesn’t seem like the right place to request for a bread oven to be made….”

I definitely felt out of place. All of the customers entering Delgart Workshop were all adventurers. Even someone who didn’t have any experience in combat like me could tell that they all looked really strong and tough. This definitely didn’t look like the kind of place where I could just walk in and ask,”Excuse me, can I make a request for a bread oven?”. Yeah, definitely not.

T/N: I swear, if I were to get isekai-ed, I would be the most useless bum ever (ᗒᗣᗕ) I don’t know how to make yeast or anything useful for survival! Heck I don’t even know how to make mayonnaise!! I mean, given how many isekai stories I’ve translated, I get the general idea… But I never tried making mayonnaise myself. I don’t want to poison myself to death.
