Chapter 21: Noble Patient

And then two days later, the incident at the treatment center somehow got glorified greatly and spread throughout the town. People were talking about a kind-hearted and beautiful man with black hair who had opened a clinic. They talked about how this man could use healing magic far beyond that of ordinary healers, how he healed dozens of severely injured people in an instant. They also said this healer would only charge 10 gold coins per person and refused to accept anything more than that. 

They also said this man would heal everyone equally, regardless of their races, appearance or age. This man would even heal those who had tried to harm him. They also talked about how he donated all the gold coins he received to underprivileged orphanages.

…The heck! I’m not that great of a man! I’m just an ordinary high school boy that you can find anywhere! Well, I’m a bit perverted though. I do have to admit that. I really need to force myself to not look at my patient in the lewd way. I can’t help it though. I’m just a normal boy. I can’t help but to stare when I see a woman going around topless or clad in scanty outfits. 

But, someone must had followed us or maybe spotted us by chance two days ago. After all, somehow the rumors about me donating food to the orphanage had started to spread as well. Of course, I didn’t donate all of my money. That rumor had been exaggerated. 

“I hope the misunderstanding will start to dissipate soon…”

“But most of it is true though? So it’s fine, right?”

“No! There’s not an ounce of truth in it!”

“Well, I guess the part about donating all your money is wrong, but the rest is pretty much accurate, isn’t it? You did heal that woman after all.”

By the way, I had told the three of them that I really didn’t heal her out of pure goodwill. Nonetheless, they still thought I was just being a tsundere. 

“But Souma, if that woman was critically injured, you would have still healed her even if she refused to come up clean, right?”

“…Well, yeah. I probably would.”

I mean, since I had the power to use healing magic, it was only natural to save someone who was dying in front of me. Besides, that woman wasn’t actually trying to kill me. She just brandished her knife to intimidate me and to make it harder for me to treat her. Her real goal was basically to damage my reputation. 

“See? You’re really kind after all. Anyway, having more allies is always a good thing. That healer will definitely try to do something to harm you again.”

Even though that woman already confessed everything to us, that healer was never arrested. Apparently, she wasn’t hired directly by that healer. She was contracted for a large sum of money through several intermediaries. It was clear that the healer was involved in this incident, but since we couldn’t procure clear evidence because he had used several intermediaries, there was nothing else we could do. The healer could easily defend himself by saying that the woman was lying and then, the guards wouldn’t be able to do anything. 

Sure, if we could get the healer to say his testimony in front of Flora, everything would be cleared in an instant. However, our case wasn’t strong enough to be able to force that healer to agree with being interrogated by Flora. 

The possibility of him trying something again was high, but both Guild Master and Elmie believed he would probably lay low for a while. Hence why, it would be best if we used this peaceful time to increase my allies and strengthen my security. 

“Souma-sama! There’s an emergency patient! Please come here quickly!”

“I’m on my way!”

It seemed a critically wounded patient had arrived. 

“My son has been badly injured. He’s right over there! Please, help him!”

The person who came to the treatment center was a woman in her 30s. She looked very well-dressed. It seemed her son had gotten in some kind of accident. His head was bleeding and his arm was bent in an unnatural direction. The boy looked like he was in deep pain. 

“I will heal you right away! Heal!”

I cast healing magic and the wound on his head closed instantly. His bent arm also returned to normal. 

“Mama…?”

“Jareth! Amazing… Just like a miracle… Thank you! Thank you for saving Jareth! Thank you so much!!”

I was glad the boy was healed. The injury looked really bad. Had he been injured far from this treatment center, he might not have survived. The boy was very lucky indeed. 

“The wound should’ve healed, but just to be safe, please make sure this kid can have plenty of rest.”

“Yes! This isn’t much, but please accept this as a token of my gratitude.”

As she said so, she tried to hand me 3 coins. However, the coins were bigger and more lavishly decorated than regular gold coins. 

“…These are platinum coins, right? The treatment fee is only 10 gold coins.”

1 platinum coin was equal to a million yen. To give me 3 platinum gold coins so nonchalantly like this, this person must be extremely wealthy. 

“No, like I said, this is my token of gratitude. Without you, Jareth might not have survived. Please, accept it!”

“I appreciate your sentiment, but it is my policy to not accept more than 10 gold coins. If you think 10 gold coins is not enough, then please lend me a hand if I ever need help.”

“…..Just like as the rumors say, you’re really like a saint.. No, you’re closer to a male god instead. You’re so different from that other healer.”

“Huh?”

It seemed she knew about the other healer too? This person looked quite wealthy. I wondered who she was?

“I apologize for not introducing myself sooner. I am Countess Rachel Curio. So the rumors about how you’d treat even non-nobles for just 10 gold coins were true. Souma, I will never forget this kindness of yours.”

Count Rachel bowed gracefully while placing her right hand over her chest and her left hand behind her back. 

Wait… A count? The rank of a count is pretty high among the nobility, right?!

“Please raise your head, Countess Rachel. I only did what I was supposed to do.”

“Fufu~ You’re truly a humble person. If there’s anything I can assist you with, please do not hesitate to call me. Now, if you’ll excuse me…”

Countess Rachel placed 10 gold coins down and gracefully left the treatment center together with Jareth. 

Whoa…. Even though she’s a woman, but she’s so impressive. A real noble is so amazing. I always thought all nobles were arrogant, but it seems that’s not always the case. 

“So-Souma… That person is Countess Rachel! She’s an incredibly important figure in this town…!”

….I knew it. She wasn’t just any ordinary noble. She seemed pretty reasonable, so it seemed I wouldn’t get in any trouble with her… Hopefully.
