- Chapter 19 - Towards the Future (The End)
A little over two years had passed since the day I learned the truth about Shinozaki.
Our situation had changed in some ways, but it hadn’t in other ways.
First, we were now attending different universities and were on the summer break of our first year of campus life. I had gotten into the university I aimed for, and Shinozaki had won a scholarship at her top-choice university, which cut her costs a lot.
Shinozaki had another big change, too. She had completely cut ties with her father. She had grown tired of him after he became a criminal for breaking into my house, and she even changed her last name from Shinozaki to her mother’s family name, “Inoue.”
After cutting ties with her father, she reconnected with her mother, who apologized for running away on her own. Shinozaki forgave her, and they rebuilt their parent-child relationship, which was good.
Also, I no longer call her by her last name. Now, after Shinozaki had changed her last name, we were officially dating. I confessed to her when we started university, and my mom was really happy when I told her.
I had told my father too, but his reaction wasn’t good. He had been busy during the robbery incident and left everything to my mom, so he never realized Mikage was the thief’s daughter. He also didn’t notice that we lived together in high school. But when I told him everything about Mikage, he got furious.
“You’re dating the daughter of a criminal? That’s shameful! Her family background is terrible, and it affects my reputation! End it immediately!”
“Shut up!”
I got angry too. For the first time in my life, I stood up to my father. It was a late rebellion phase, but seeing my reaction completely shocked him. He didn’t know how to handle a son who defied him. I kept my ground and finally said, “If you won’t allow us to date, I’ll cut ties with you!” He surprisingly gave in easily. It seemed he had no experience dealing with a rebellious son.
From that point, we could date openly without hiding anything.
“―Yeah, I made beef stew today.”
“It looks delicious.”
A few days earlier, we had gone shopping and had a daytime date. Now we were back in our shared apartment, having dinner. Mikage’s cooking was so good that once I started eating, I didn’t say much. I was just focused on the food.
“Don’t rush, there’s more if you want.”
“I know, but I can’t help it.”
“No, it’s nice to see you enjoying it so much.”
Seeing her smile made me feel happy. Even though our relationship had started casually, I was glad we had reached this point.
Mikage had changed me, too. I used to be like a puppet, obedient to my father, but thanks to her, I was able to hide her for a while and even stand up to my father. Without her, I’d probably still be a stressed-out robot who only studies.
“Thank you, Mikage.”
“Why all of a sudden?”
“I just wanted to say thanks for letting me have these peaceful days.”
“That’s my line.”
Mikage smiled happily as she was tearing off a piece of the bread on the side.
“Omiya’s the one who made my life easier. I’m really grateful. I can enjoy every day now.”
“Mikage…”
“So, thank you. And let’s keep going forward together, okay?”
“Yeah… of course.”
Summer, age 19.
At this early stage of life, I was truly lucky to have already found the person I love most.
Of course, the future is unknown, but one thing I knew for sure was that I would never betray Mikage, and she wouldn’t betray me either.
Both of us came from difficult families, so if we ever had a child, I would want to give them all my love and raise them properly.
For now, I just wanted to enjoy my time alone with Mikage.
