A few days later, the day of the forest school trip finally arrived.

We were on a bus, heading to the place for a one-night and two-day trip. A nature lodge in the forest somewhere in the prefecture.

“Do you want some candy?”

Sitting next to me, Shinozaki offered me a piece. She had decided to join the trip after I covered her part-time job shift, and by chance, we ended up in the same group and sat next to each other.

I gratefully accepted the candy, but before I could say anything,

“Wow, it’s great that Mikage’s here too♪”

A girl with blonde hair, Hoshikawa, Shinozaki’s friend, is in our group. She leaned over the front seat to say that. She was probably the happiest about Shinozaki deciding to join.

“But why would you join all of a sudden?”

“W-well, it doesn’t really matter…”

“I feel like you’ve become kind of close to Hasshi, maybe you convinced her?”

…She’s sharp.

There was no way I could tell the truth, so I had to dodge the question.

“No… I didn’t do anything.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, Shinozaki just happened to have her plans work out.”

“Well, I guess that happens. Anyway, it’s great that Mikage’s here too♪ —Oh, by the way, Mikage…”

“What?”

“Can we swap seats? I want to chat with Hasshi.”

“…Sure, but why?”

“Well, you know, I wanna mark my territory.”

…She jokes like that again.

“Hehe, looks like Hashiguchi-kun’s popular.”

Shinozaki squinted at me in a strangely serious way.

What is even with her…

“Fine, whatever… just like Yuna then.”

“Yay!”

So we swapped seats, and from then on, I just became a bot, nodding along to Hoshikawa’s nonstop chatter.

We eventually arrived at the nature lodge for the forest school trip. Even though it’s called a house, it was a plain but solid building and kind of official-looking.

After putting our bags in the rooms, we got dressed in our gym clothes and started the outdoor activity (sketching). We were supposed to stick with our groups, but many students just wandered off and did whatever they wanted. The teachers didn’t bother scolding anyone, since it was a day to relax after finals. So the group system was mostly just for show.

I had planned to sketch quietly by myself, but Shinozaki and Hoshikawa dragged me along, and the three of us ended up sketching the nearby pond together.

“Sketching time sounds kind of naughty, don’t you think~?”

“…Are you a grade schooler?”

Shinozaki rolled her eyes and muttered to Hoshikawa.

“Excuse me! I’m a proper high school girl, you know!”

“Then stop joking about dirty stuff. It’s dumb…”

“Hating dirty jokes, you’re so innocent~ But Mikage, that’s fine. You have to stay pure and pretty just like this.”

…I wonder how Hoshikawa would react if she knew I’d already taken her purity. Well, maybe it’s better not to find out.

As we continued sketching, Hoshikawa wandered off to see other friends, leaving just Shinozaki and me. With her gone, the air felt calm, like a storm had passed.

“Hoshikawa is really loud. You notice how quiet it is once she’s gone, and it’s for the better.”

“…Do you like girls like Yuna?”

“No, not really.”

I denied it to avoid any weird misunderstanding.

“I see, that’s fine then… Anyway, Hashiguchi, thank you.”

“…For what?”

“For giving me the chance to come on this trip.”

“Oh, that.”

“That’s the only reason?”

“Yeah.”

“Anyway, I’m really glad I came. It’s nice to get away from just school and work, and I feel so relaxed.”

As she said this, Shinozaki brushed the dirt off her skirt and stood up.

“Then, we shouldn’t stay alone too long, as people might get the wrong idea. I’ll go check on other friends.”

“Alright, got it.”

“See you later.”

Shinozaki’s face was bright and cheerful, and her positive energy was obvious as she walked away while waving. Seeing her like that made me feel glad I’d persuaded her to come.

Now, I just hope the rest of the trip will go smoothly.

Thinking that, I quickly finished my sketch and pulled out my vocabulary notebook. A little study session by the pond. No matter what, studying was always a must.
