Chapter 9 – Krish-san and Mei’s Attributes
With Mei’s guidance, we headed towards the rocky mountain where the dragon zombie had appeared.
As an adventurer, I’m grateful to be able to borrow a carriage managed by the Fourth Knights from the walled city of the Corias territory, as it shortens our travel time.
“Krish-san, Mei, could you tell me about your attributes?”
In this world, every person is born with a specific attribute.
Whether they are warriors or mages, they can only use powers that match their attribute.
I have the Holy attribute, and I’m a thief.
I can use Holy attribute healing and attack magic.
“Yes! I have the Wind attribute.”
“Wind, huh? That’s pretty handy.”
Mei, who was driving the cart, declared her attribute while glancing at Krish-san.
She was clearly being considerate of Krish-san, so I looked at Krish-san with curiosity.
“I’m… attributeless.”
“Attributeless? That’s rare.”
I know someone with attributeless attributes.
Attributeless people are rare, so you don’t come across them very often.
My old acquaintance was proud of being attributeless.
“Krish-san, what can you do with your no-attribute?”
“Nothing.”
“Huh?”
“Attributeless means exactly that. I also believe that to be true.”
I tilted my head at Krish-san’s troubled expression.
The attributeless person I knew didn’t interpret it that way.
“That’s strange.”
“Strange?”
“Yeah, attributes have their own significance. I think attributeless is an attribute full of possibilities.”
Remembering what that old acquaintance had told me about the true nature of attributeless people, I began to think that Krish-san might not be aware of her true nature.
“That’s not true. In reality, I cannot use the magic that others can. Although my magic power reacts, nothing happens. That’s why I live by the sword.”
With that, she unsheathed the sword from her waist.
“I don’t need attributes. With this sword, I’ll cut down monsters and magic.”
I think Krish-san’s resolve is admirable, but is that really true?
Attributeless. The attributeless people I knew were untainted and unaffected by anything.
In fact, each attribute has its strengths and weaknesses.
As a Holy-attribute, I have a tremendous advantage against Dark and Death attributes.
However, against other attributes, my offensive magic isn’t very effective. That’s why Holy attributes are only useful as a healer.
Cleansing, which uses the purifying effect to remove disease and dirt, is also highly valued, so if I wasn’t an adventurer, I would even consider working as a cleaner.
When me and my party went into a dungeon for a few days on an adventure, I was able to use Clean to keep us free from odors.
Krish-san seems to be pessimistic about the fact that she has no attributes.
Rather than being proud of her swordsmanship, it appears more like a desperate resolve, as if she’s clinging to the only path available to her.
“Salt-sama, I was originally from the slums.”
“The slums?”
“Yes, but now, thanks to Lana-sama, the Corias territory has changed a lot. But two years ago it was in a terrible state. To nobles and outsiders, it might have seemed like a fine city.”
When I came here a long time ago, I had never seen a slum, but there is inequality and a dark side to every town. This is true, even in the Capital.
“The gap kept growing. But then, Lana-sama became Steward and carried out great reforms. With that, the town was reborn.”
Krish-san’s eyes sparkled with joy as she spoke of Corias’s transformation, her face full of hope.
I can tell that she really loves this town.
“It was Lana-sama and Freyna-sama who made me Vice-commander of the Fourth Knights, even though I’m attributeless and can’t use magic. Therefore, in order to repay them, I must master the sword and become stronger.”
As Krish-san declared this, I couldn’t help but wonder if there’s anything I can do to help her.
“Mei, can you stop for a moment?”
“Is something wrong? Do you need to go to the bathroom?”
I gave a wry smile to Mei, who said it teasingly.
I asked her to stop the carriage to give Krish-san and Mei a little lecture.
I often did this with Cynthia and Asha too.
“Listen to me, the attributes in this world have inherent strengths and weaknesses.”
“What’s this about all of a sudden?”
“Just listen to what I have to say for a moment. Mei, can you show me your wind magic?”
“Yes.”
After glancing at Krish-san, Mei created wind and sent it flying like an arrow.
“Wind Arrow.”
“Right. Wind magic is said to be powerful because it’s part of the four elements, but it strengthens Fire, can’t go through Water, and it’s inferior to Earth attribute.”
When I pointed out its compatibility with other elements, Mei made a sour face.
“Wind magic excels at lightening the body, increasing arrow accuracy, and other abilities, but it’s considered the weakest in raw power among the four elements.”
“That’s true but——!”
Mei tried to argue, but I stopped her with my hand and continued.
“However, by honing your ability, you can also create a tornado and increase its power to the point of blowing everything away.”
Mei seemed to understand after I explained that it was a matter of proficiency.
However, after hearing about the great power of Wind, Krish-san’s expression darkened.
“Krish-san.”
“What?”
“I have a friend who is also attributeless.”
“Also attributeless?”
“Yeah, he’s a high-ranking adventurer, and he once said that having no attribute means not being influenced by any specific element. And Krish-san herself said that she could cut through monsters and magic, didn’t she?”
“Yeah, I did.”
“That’s what seems strange to me.”
“Eh?”
Krish-san tilted her head, not understanding what I meant.
“Mei, cast a Wind spell at me.”
“Eh?! But that’s dangerous!”
“It’s fine, I’ll use Holy magic too.”
“Okay then.”
As Mei cast her wind magic, I didn’t use any magic but slashed at the spell with my knife. The wind magic was sliced but dispersed and still came toward me.
“Gaaghh!”
“Salt-sama!”
“It’s okay. I can cast healing magic on myself.”
I casted healing magic on the wound from the Wind blade that Mei created, and turned to look at Krish-san.
“Did you see that, Krish-san?”
“See what?”
“I just cut the Wind blade with a weapon wrapped in magical power. But it didn’t cut it completely. If it was Dark magic or Death magic, I would have been able to cut it completely. I’ve experienced that many times to understand it. But neutralizing magic of other attributes is much more difficult.”
I completely healed my wounds and stood up.
“Now, I’m going to cast a Holy magic spell at you, Krish-san. Try cutting it.”
“…Got it.”
Krish-san drew her sword and wrapped it in magical power.
The sword was wrapped in colorless magical power, different from any other attribute, and cut through the pale Holy arrow I had fired.
It cut cleanly through the magic power.
“What does this mean?”
“Attributeless is not stained by anything. That means it has no weaknesses. It means that Krish-san has an attribute that no one can beat. Attributeless can cut through the magic of any attribute, regardless of compatibility.”
Attributeless might not be able to do what other attributes can do.
But I want Krish-san to know that it’s an attribute with its unique strength.
“I’ve never thought of it this way before…”
“It’s not that Krish-san has no attribute. You have an attribute that only you have. So be proud of it. Krish-san’s attributeless is strong.”
I said all I could.
How Krish-san would feel about it is up to her. Now, knowing both of their attributes, I can start planning our strategy for the battles ahead.
