Chapter 82 – The Spreading Disease
There were more people coming and going in the Doubt city than when I was here before.
Courtesans in gorgeous clothes, customers gambling, and among them were probably the people suffering from illness.
“Let’s go talk to Mia at the Adventurer’s Guild.”
“Okay.”
We headed for the Adventurer’s Guild, and when we entered, a desolate atmosphere hung in the air.
“Excuse me. I’m Salt. I’d like to see Mia, the Guild Master.”
When I spoke to the receptionist, she looked very tired, probably because she’s been very busy.
“I’m sorry. The Guild Master is currently out on urgent business due to a surge in requests.”
“I see. In that case, please pass on the message that Salt is in the city.”
“Understood.”
As a real adventurer, I might have to hurry up and find out the cause.
If this illness is occurring within the Adventurer’s Guild as well, then that may be where the manpower shortage is coming from.
“First off, let’s secure a hotel and ask around. We’ll take a break today and start the investigation in earnest tomorrow.”
“Yes!”
The other three replied, and Ao looked outside curiously.
“Is something wrong?”
“No, it’s just… the sky is gloomier and the air smells worse than when we came here before.”
“The air smells worse?”
“Yes.”
As Fenrir species, Ao and Ruri have a better sense of smell than normal humans.
I looked at Ruri and found her nodding in agreement with Ao’s opinion.
“I see. I’ll try to use purification to clean it up as much as I can.”
“Yes!”
Ao was happy, so we moved to the hotel and took three rooms.
Since the rooms also smelled bad, I used purification and cleansing spells to make it somewhat better.
With Eris still on my shoulder, I headed out alone into the night streets of Doubt.
The red-light district, which had once seemed glittering, now had a heavy, gloomy atmosphere, with the shadow of disease lurking in the background.
I arrived at the brothel that Honey-sama had mentioned would cooperate with us.
“Gekkoudo. Yeah, this is the place.”
When I entered, a bear beastwoman who was the clerk in charge gave me a sharp glare.
“What do you want?”
“I’ve come here at Honey-sama’s request. I’m Salt.”
“Oh, so you’re the one. This way.”
The clerk called a maid and led me to a place where three courtesans were lying in their rooms.
“They suddenly got sick and quickly became weak.”
The maid, who seemed to be their caretaker, explained. However, she didn’t appear to have contracted the illness herself.
“Do you have any idea where they got the disease?”
“There’s no specific place or time that seems to be the source. But the number of cases has suddenly increased over the past few weeks.”
There must be some common factor in this information, but I still can’t find a clue.
At that moment, a man suddenly came running up to me.
“Hey, you! Can you cure the disease?”
His eyes were bloodshot, and he looked anxious and angry.
“Please stay calm. I’m trying to find out the cause of the illness.”
I responded calmly, but the man clenched his fists.
“My sister… My sister is sick with it and is on the brink of death! Please, save her!”
I could tell from his words that it was an urgent matter.
“Where is she? I’ll go and examine her right away.”
The man nodded with a tearful face and guided me inside.
When I entered the room where his sister was sleeping, I found a weak young woman lying there.
A rash had spread all over her body, and she was barely breathing.
“This is…”
The symptoms of this illness were not those of an ordinary disease. It felt as though some abnormal force was at play.
“Help me… Onii-chan…”
The young courtesan, still in her youth, called out to her brother in a faint voice.
Seeing her, I wanted to help her.
“I’m going to use healing magic on her now. I’ve heard that healing magic only has a temporary effect, but this is what I can do until I find the cause.”
“I’m begging you! Please, save my sister!”
The man, with tears in his eyes, begged.
First of all, what should I do? A rash is spreading across her skin. And her body is weakened by the fever.
It’s possible that she’s been affected by some kind of poison or virus.
The people of this world wouldn’t understand if I told them about a virus, but perhaps an antidote would be effective.
“Antidote.”
I casted a Holy magic spell with an antidote effect to stop the progression of the disease attacking her body.
Her complexion, which had been suffering up until now, quickly calmed down. Seeing that, I casted a Recovery spell to heal her injuries.
The rash appeared to stop spreading, and the disease’s progression seemed to have been halted.
However, this is not a fundamental solution.
“Eris, do you have any clues?”
I put Eris, who was on my shoulder, down next to the patient and asked her.
“I think…monster, inside.”
“Monster?”
“Yeah. I sense monster.”
“I see. We need to investigate further.”
I might be able to suppress the disease’s progression, but without addressing the root cause, I won’t be able to fully resolve the situation.
“Your sister’s condition is stable for now, but we don’t know when it might worsen again. For now, she must remain in bed.”
“Thank you! Thank you!”
After bidding the man farewell, I treated the remaining three women using the same method.
