Chapter 7 – In the Adventurer’s Guild
My whole body hurts from sleeping on the sofa at the front desk.
I washed my face and tried to stretch my neck when Freyna-sama arrived.
Freyna-sama, who’s fidgeting shyly in a fluttery dress, looks very cute.
“Good morning, Freyna-sama.”
“Ah, yeah. Good morning.”
“You look especially cute today. Would you like to have breakfast with me?”
Asha and Cynthia had taught me to always express when a woman looked beautiful or cute.
So I did just that, but Freyna-sama hugged herself, looking cold.
Cynthia often got cold and used to wear a jacket, so I draped my jacket over Freyna-sama.
“T-thank you. Y-yes, I’d be happy to join you.”
I invited her out of impulse, but I’m glad that she agreed.
However, when I tried to take a step forward, Freyna-sama almost fell over.
Remembering how Asha often nearly fell over when we attended noble parties, I gently offered my hand to escort Freyna-sama.
I ended up acting out the situation because Asha liked doing this sort of thing.
As I looked at Freyna-sama, remembering the old days, I was taken aback by how beautiful and cute Freyna-sama is, different from Asha and Cynthia.
I hope she doesn’t notice my sweaty palms.
♢
Breakfast with Freyna-sama was a constant source of tension.
I didn’t expect the lodging staff to prepare a frilly one-piece dress for her, and when Freyna-sama showed up wearing it, she looked incredibly beautiful and cute. It made me want to protect her.
I felt like I had to be extra careful not to ruin anything, so I tried harder than usual to act like a gentleman.
During breakfast, I didn’t feel like the conversation flowed smoothly, which was pathetic of me.
Haha, I know I did something out of character, but I think it was also because my body was hurting from sleeping on the sofa at the front desk.
My neck hurt a lot if I didn’t stick my chest out.
Freyna-sama also seemed a bit stiff, so maybe she didn’t sleep that well either on the bed.
After I returned to my room after seeing her off, I could smell a scent characteristic of women, and it reminded me of Freyna-sama’s figure.
With a pounding heart, I casted a healing spell to heal my neck.
Today, I’m planning to leave the lodging to explore the city and take on a job as an adventurer.
“Well, I’ll be living in Corias for a while, so I need to get to know the city a bit better. Whether I stay as an adventurer or get a job with the Knights, it’s necessary to understand the geography.”
As an adventurer, I plan to focus on investigating the miasma.
Miasma is polluted air that contains poison and high concentrations of magical elements.
As a result, creatures that inhale it turn into monsters. It also decays plants and land.
Since I have a good affinity with the Holy attribute and can deal with the source of the miasma, I can make money just by purifying it.
As I was walking around and approached the Adventurer’s Guild, someone jumped out.
“Salt-sama!”
“Huh?!”
I was surprised to see that the person who jumped out was a familiar face.
“Mei? What’s wrong?”
“Salt-sama! Please help me!”
“What happened?”
As Mei panicked, I looked inside the Adventurer’s Guild.
“Anyway, come this way.”
As I entered the Adventurer’s Guild with Mei pulling me by the arm, I saw several men surrounding Krish-san.
“What the!”
“Vice commander Krish-sama was protecting me from those adventurers, but…”
Krish-san is surrounded by three male adventurers.
They seem to be aiming at something, and Krish-san doesn’t notice what’s happening behind her.
The fourth man raised his club.
“Holy Impulse!”
I flicked my thumb, sending a holy shockwave that blasted the man with the club into the wall. I quickly knocked the other three back and approached Krish-san.
“Salt-dono!”
“Krish-san, what are you doing?”
“Ah, well, this is…”
“It’s my fault! I got scared when the adventurers called out to me, and vice commander Krish-sama protected me. It was my fault for not clearly refusing them.”
Mei explained what happened in a sad voice.
Krish-san, looking embarrassed, ran a hand through her beautiful silver hair. If she stayed silent, she’d look like a refined lady, but perhaps her training in the knights made her act so manly.
“What’s going on?!”
As I was wondering what to do next, the receptionist from the adventurer’s guild came over.
A beautiful woman with glasses and reddish-brown hair tied up in a bun looked around the guild as if to assess the situation.
Other adventurers were watching, but none dared to approach.
“Sorry. It’s just a dispute between adventurers.”
“And you are?”
“Here.”
I showed my adventurer ID to prove my identity.
The receptionist looked surprised when she saw my adventurer ID.
“Salt the ‘Holy Light’!!!”
Please stop shouting that embarrassing nickname…
“Holy Light?”
Behind me, Krish-san tilted her head.
But the Adventurer’s Guild began to buzz with excitement.
“Yes! He’s a healer and dagger user who wields Holy Light. His party, consisting of his childhood friends ‘Sword Saint’ Asha and ‘Meticulous Mage’ Cynthia, is a renowned A-rank adventurer party in the country!”
You didn’t have to say all of that!
“So Salt-dono is such an amazing adventurer?! So that’s why you were able to defeat the Wraith King alone.”
Krish-san, saying that now will just lead to more misunderstandings! Why did you say that!!
“Wow! That’s the first time I’ve heard that! The Wraith King is considered a natural disaster-level monster. When it appears, it’s said that even a group of A-rank adventurers would have a hard time defeating it!”
Why are you saying everything so loudly?! Am I the only one who thinks this is a bit dramatic?
“I just happen to have the Holy attribute, that’s all.”
“I see! That makes sense now. Salt-dono’s skills are exactly what the Knights need! Salt-dono, would you please accept joining the Fourth Knights Brigade?”
Krish-san, that’s already a different matter.
Mei asked me to help, that’s why I came here.
I glanced at Mei, who stuck out her tongue in a playful “oops” gesture.
Mei… I thought you were the one person who wouldn’t lie. Give me back my trust.
“I see, so that’s why you both came to the Adventurer’s Guild. Understood.”
Which part are you understanding, receptionist-san?!
And where does the acting end and the truth begin?
I’m totally lost here. Could you explain it a bit more clearly?
“That’s right. But now, I’ve learned about Salt-dono’s surprising background and nickname.”
“I’m also happy to learn about his achievements that I didn’t know about.”
Why are the receptionist and Krish-san shaking hands?
As I was dumbfounded by their strange exchange, the fallen adventurers stood up and asked.
“I-is it true that you’re Salt, the Holy Light?”
“I don’t really like that nickname, but yeah, it’s true.”
“P-please forgive us! We just wanted to mess with the Fourth Knights a bit because they came here!”
So it seems they really did approach Mei and tease Krish-san.
Did Krish-san and the receptionist just turn this to their advantage? Is the receptionist in on it too?
“Are you on bad terms with the Fourth Knights?”
“No, it’s not that! You’re a man, right? You should understand. There are so many beautiful women there. It’s a man’s nature to want to be with them.”
I don’t like seeing these men with their grins.
Krish-san is certainly a beautiful woman, and Mei has insanely big boobs, but that doesn’t justify these adventures’ bad behavior.
“I understand what you mean, but you better stop doing that from now on. I’m backing them up.”
“Y-yes! We’re not stupid enough to go against an A-rank.”
And with that, the four adventurers left.
Coming to the countryside, the number of bad guys inevitably increases, indicating how bad the law and order is.
“Um, Salt-san! There’s a request I really want you to take on!”
The receptionist’s eyes sparkled as she gave me a cunning look that said trouble.
“No, I——”
“Salt-dono! I’ll help too!”
“Me too!”
For some reason, Krish-san and Mei leaned forward eagerly, fully prepared to accept the request.
Their appearance reminded me of Asha and Cynthia, and I couldn’t help but take a deep breath.
“What kind of request is it?”
“To slay a dragon!”
Why is the guild asking a healer like me to slay a dragon? It doesn’t make any sense.
