Chapter 66 – Fog in the Corias City
It was getting close to dusk.
The festival was reaching its climax, and I was beginning to think that it would be best if everything just passed by without incident.
“Master.”
“Yeah, something is wrong.”
The atmosphere throughout the town became oppressive, and it was enveloped in a thick fog.
“What is this?”
“I don’t know, but if they’re creating a fog, it means they’re trying to hide something.”
Lana-sama and the others are waiting at the mansion.
We need to identify the cause of this fog and where it’s coming from.
“Krish-san, Mei. We’re heading to the town to find out what’s causing it.”
“Yes, please. We’ll return to the mansion and act as Lana-sama’s guards.”
“Salt-sama! Good luck.”
I parted ways with them and set out to find out what was causing the fog.
When I headed towards the town, the fog had enveloped the entire walled city of Corias.
I couldn’t even see where anyone was.
“This is——!”
“Can’t Salt-sama clear the fog with purification?”
“If it was death magic, I could get rid of it, but it’s just a thick fog made by Water attribute. I tried a few times already but it didn’t work.”
“I see.”
I understand that the other person created the fog as a distraction, but how could he create fog the size of an entire walled city?
The air felt cold, but I couldn’t feel any wind.
“Could this be artificially created?”
“What do you mean?”
“Various conditions are required to create fog. This wasn’t done by magic alone, so the conditions must have been intentionally set up.”
What’s the point of going to such lengths to create this fog?
“What else are they trying to do besides kidnapping Lana-sama?”
“Besides kidnapping?”
“Yeah, this fog is so massive. It can’t be just kidnapping. It seems like they’re hiding something bigger.”
“Something bigger?”
“I smell something strange!”
“Something strange?”
I tried to smell something after hearing Ao’s words, but I couldn’t detect anything.
“You’re right, there’s a strange smell. It’s like the smell of something decaying.”
“Decaying?”
If it’s the smell of decay, I should be able to do something with my purification, but I can’t shake the feeling that my Holy magic has been restricted somehow.
“Sorry, but can you find out where that smell is coming from?”
“Okay, I’ll try.”
“Ugh, it’s so smelly!”
Ao was nearly in tears, but for now, I had to rely on their sense of smell.
Following their guidance, we reached a spot connected to the sewers.
“Is this it?”
When I reached the entrance, I could smell the smell.
The fog was also coming from this spot.
“I’m thinking of going in, but if it’s too much for you two, you can wait here.”
“No, now that the smell has gotten this strong, my nose has stopped working.”
“Yeah. Ao is fine now.”
Their voices were slightly nasally, which added a certain cuteness, even if it did make the situation feel a bit less tense.
The two of them were wearing long-coat maid outfits, which they used as battle attire, but they were bound to get dirty in the sewers.
They look good on them, so it’s a shame, but maybe I should ask Lana-sama to prepare some new ones for them?
“Are you thinking about something?”
“No, I just thought that the two of you would get your maid outfits dirty.”
“Don’t worry! Bunny-sama gave me five outfits, and Lana-sama gave me three, so we can switch based on color and purpose.”
“I have the same amount of mini ones too!”
So, they’ve already received maid outfits from Lana-sama?!
It seems like a bond has formed between these women without me knowing.
“Well, that’s fine then. So, these are your battle maid outfits, right?”
“That’s right, Master.”
“That’s right! Master!”
They both look like they’re having fun, so there shouldn’t be any problems.
We entered the sewers as is.
No matter how much purification I did, the sewers were a place where decay accumulated.
The Corias territory is not as well maintained as the Capital, so we pressed on while I continued to purify the area, though the two of them looked uncomfortable.
Sewers often become a kind of dungeon where monsters appear.
Lower level monsters such as slimes and goblins live here.
Food scraps and contaminated water become food for the monsters, so it’s a good place for them to live.
As we moved forward, dealing with them as we went… The fog became even thicker, and the smell of decay became stronger.
“This is it.”
“Master.”
I tried to open the door, but Ruri told me to step back when she opened it herself.
To lessen the burden on Ruri, I set up a Holy barrier to support against any negative effects that might come from opening the door, like the smell.
“I’ll open it.”
Ao nodded at Ruri’s words, wary of the enemies behind it.
Ruri slowly opened the door, and the stench of decay was quite strong. The room was filled with a massive, pitch-black, rotting creature that looked like a heap of sludge.
“Is it…a slime?”
“It’s probably a Death Sludge Slime. It’s a subspecies of Emperor Slime. Its attribute is water, but it seems to have absorbed a large amount of decayed matter. It has some death attribute mixed in.”
As Ruri explained, a chilling cold filled the air, freezing everything around us.
“How could something like this be in the Corias territory?”
“Someone must have brought it here and fed it corpses.”
Cynthia’s face came to mind as Ruri calmly analyzed the situation.
Did Cynthia really do something like this?
“If such a monster is allowed into the city, the city will be destroyed!”
“Can Master purify the death attribute?”
“Can we defeat the slime?”
“If it’s only water attribute, it could be handled like an Emperor Slime.”
I could see cold sweat on Ruri’s forehead, which confirmed that this is indeed a formidable enemy.
“Alright, I’ll give it a try. I need you to buy me some time.”
“Understood, Ao! Don’t take the enemy’s attacks.”
“Got it!”
The three of us each took action to fulfill our roles.
