Chapter 43 – A Cheating Wife and the True Mastermind
After meeting with Mei, I immediately began to act.
I plan to set up a small trap with the help of Ao and Ruri.
“I need you two to lend me your strength.”
“I’ll do anything if it’s an order from Master. Who will I have to kill?”
“Ao is happy to receive orders from Master!!! What kind of monster will we kill?!”
Why are this pair of mother and daughter so keen on killing? Perhaps it’s their hunting instincts as Fenrirs?
“No, it’s not that. I want you to spread a little rumor around town. And there’s one more thing. I need you to do…”
I talked to them in the morning and had them running around all day. It’s nothing special.
Just spread the rumor in Daut city that all the residents of Daut leaked information to the Azaman territory, based on the testimony of those who were caught.
“Was this okay to do?”
“Master, everyone had a surprised look on their face! But they said it had nothing to do with them.”
“Yeah, that’s enough.”
With the two of them wearing the recognition-blocking robes, I had them spread the rumor of spies everywhere they went, so that the town’s people would hear rumors they couldn’t trace back to a source.
At first, it would be dismissed as mere gossip heard somewhere, but as more people claimed to have heard it, the more they would begin to suspect that it might be true.
It would gradually turn into a rumor that even innocent people could be labeled as spies.
What would the people who heard it think?
As a reincarnated person, I myself have experienced the internet society.
I knew how people would make a fuss over fake news, whether true or false.
For example, a baseless rumor about tissue sales restrictions on an SNS would increase the sales of those tissues the next day…
Now, if the rumor concerned themselves, they would be overcome with anxiety and act without even checking whether it’s true or false.
“Now, all that’s left to do is…”
I waited in a special seat for the appearance of Gain-dono, who I had told to put on a show for the people.
“Citizens of this town! Listen to me!”
As the afternoon turned to evening, Mei’s family of three was brought to the square, led by Gain-dono and soldiers.
Despite the soldiers forming a perimeter, all eyes from the townsfolk were fixed upon them.
“These people are suspected of being spies! As I’m sure you all know, under the law of the kingdom, those suspected of being spies can be executed at the discretion of the feudal lord. However, these people say that everyone living in Daut city is also a collaborator.”
Mei’s father was gagged, struggling as if wanting to argue against what Gain-dono had just said. However, he was restrained by soldiers.
Mei’s mother was laughing madly, and her younger brother glared angrily at the townspeople.
“Gain-dono! That’s a lie! I didn’t do anything like that!”
“Me too! They’re trying to take the townspeople down with them!”
Several townspeople denied it, but were held back by the soldiers.
The townspeople must have started to believe the rumors were true.
Perhaps they feared they might be executed too.
Such thoughts must’ve welled up inside them, and they started throwing stones at Mei’s family.
Somewhere, Mei is watching her family suffer.
She might even be in pain for her family.
But this isn’t the end.
“I want to believe in you all too. But these people say otherwise. They say the townspeople are fools who spill secrets at the slightest prompting.”
The townspeople looked at each other at Gain-dono’s words, tilting their heads and shaking their heads in confusion.
The townspeople probably didn’t fully understand Gain-dono’s words.
“Let me ask you this. Have you ever confided your worries to someone, thinking it was just casual conversation? Have you ever been treated kindly and ended up telling them more than you should have? Have you ever approached a specific person for advice? Has there been anyone like that around you?”
After hearing Gain-dono’s words, everyone turned their attention to one person.
“You always greet me kindly and you helped me out on a few occasions.”
“Me too. You always call out to me, and when I’m in trouble I can always rely on you.”
“Me too.”
In a strange way, everyone seemed to be looking at the same person.
It was unnatural in a way. However, as the townspeople felt guilty to the person they had in mind, everyone was still suspicious.
“Come on, you’re being ridiculous. There’s no way I would do something like that!”
Gain-dono left Mei’s family in the care of the soldiers and headed towards the soldier who was in charge of holding back the citizens.
“Rutas, are you a spy?”
“Haha, please don’t say stupid things! Commander, I’ve just been doing my job honestly every day.”
“That’s right. From my point of view, you’ve been a good, kind and honest soldier. In a town like Daut without competent officials, you’ve helped me out with checking numbers, managing the town, and patrolling.”
“That’s right! Not just as a gatekeeper, but I’m always diligent!”
I’ve heard of a strategy called the “good guy strategy.”
Kind to everyone, friendly to everyone, and excellent in communication.
Even if they usually neglect their own errands, they work for the sake of others.
Maybe that person was truly kind at first.
But one day, that “good guy” realized something. He realized other people’s worries could be turned into money…
Anyone would come to a good guy for advice.
From the perspective of others, getting advice is always beneficial.
And then the “good guy” who everyone came to for advice started thinking, “What if I put all this information together?”
It actually came back as a great success. Someone decided to buy those information. He started to thank and gave rewards to the “good guy.”
And so, the “good guy” did more good things, collected more and more puzzle pieces, and completed the bigger puzzle.
By offering the completed puzzle to those who wanted it, he could make a big profit.
This included confidential information in the territory.
For example, military movements.
Financial transactions.
Secrets of local products.
The lord’s schedule.
The strength of the guards.
Management of the entire town.
All of this became useful information, and the more it was sold, the more money “the good guy” made.
To those who were unaware, they might have simply been telling “the good guy” about how their son had become a soldier and was doing well.
A farmer might have just been talking about this year’s harvest size.
With no civil officials available, the lord might have simply been asking “the good guy” for help.
They asked the “good guy” without regards that all of that information could be taken advantage of by the spy.
By the time they realized it, all the information had already been stolen, something no one ever considered.
“There is no evidence!”
“Evidence?”
If Rutas hadn’t captured Mei, his plan might have been perfect.
But I never thought he’d go that far.
“Rutas.”
“Salt-sama!”
“Don’t we have the right to execute spies based on suspicion alone?”
“P-please wait! It’s true that the townspeople are suspicious of me, but that’s about it!”
“Mei was accused of being the culprit by her family. There was no evidence, but she was held captive anyway.”
“She’s part of the family! But I’m not! I was just being kind.”
Rutas still tried to make excuses.
So, I removed Mei’s mother’s muzzle and cast a “Refresh” spell.
“Huh?”
“There’s something I want to ask you.”
“Yes?”
At the same time, I casted a “Recovery” and “Healing” spell.
“Hauu~~”
I only used a small amount of magic to restore her stamina, and the Healing spell induced a sleep state.
By applying these three spells, I could cast a new spell.
“What kind of person is your husband to you?”
“He’s trash!”
Mei’s father looked shocked at the words of his wife.
“And your son?”
“A good-for-nothing.”
This time the son glared at his mother.
This is a kind of hypnosis magic that elicits true feelings and deep-seated psychology.
“And what about Rutas?”
“He’s someone I love.”
“Oh, so it’s not your husband, but Rutas whom you love? He’s currently under suspicion of being a spy. Is that true?”
“…When I was feeling lonely, he would speak to me kindly. He would also embrace me in his gentle arms.”
Mei’s mother is a cute woman, just like Mei.
However, she doesn’t wear makeup and has always been dependent on men.
You could say that this is her way of getting by in life. In a way, she was probably the easiest person for Rutas to manipulate.
“He’s a spy, isn’t he?”
“…Yes. He asked me to gather information from the townspeople.”
“That’s a lie! Don’t make up nonsense!”
Rutas screamed, unsheathing the sword hanging from his waist to try and kill Mei’s mother.
But Gain-dono acted fast.
He knocked Rutas’ sword away and pinned him down in an instant.
“Tell us in detail.”
Gain-dono exuded such intimidation that it was hard to believe he was the same person who had pathetically bowed his head to me.

T/N: Dem, this might be one of the longest chapters so far. And the monologue about the “good guy” was tough to translate too. I hope it’s understandable
