Chapter 39 – I Hate My Family [Mei’s POV]
[Mei’s POV]
I hate my family.
My father never listens to what others say and keeps bragging about himself.
My mother just bows her head and keeps following my father.
My younger brother just smiles happily because he is loved by such parents.
And I also hate myself, who is unable to say anything back to such a family…
I hated everything.
So when I joined the all-female Knight Brigade created by Lana-sama, I applied to join the intelligence corps.
The intelligence corps is a special unit within the Knight Brigade, and I thought I would be able to gain more knowledge than other units.
Without knowledge, you can’t judge whether information is important or not.
You are required to make such judgments, and it’s not as if you can just report every piece of information you get.
It’s a behind-the-scenes job within the Knight Brigade, involving the gritty task of gathering information, but it gave me a sense of being needed.
For someone like me, who only knew the world of my family, it was a place to learn new knowledge and indulge in the sweet pleasure of knowing others’ secrets.
Even if I wasn’t interested in the person, learning their secrets allowed me to experience the pleasure of being the only one to know about them.
After completing a year of training, I was assigned to the vice-commander’s unit, led by Krish-sama, as a knight.
My idol, Krish-sama, may have come from the slums, but she is an honorable knight at heart. With a talent for swordsmanship, she has risen to the position of vice-commander through martial arts and charisma.
Many female knights admired her beauty and talent, and I was no exception.
I wasn’t interested in climbing the ranks. But I continue to work hard, hoping to be of use to Krish-sama, Lana-sama, and Freyna-sama.
Unfortunately, I have little talent in combat and would be of no use on the battlefield.
However, I have the eagerness to gather information by befriending others and learning knowledge that wouldn’t normally be accessible.
“Mei, do you know what to do about this?”
“Fufu, I’ll help you, Krish-sama.”
I’ve also learned how to use the necessary tools in the process of gathering information, and by using the information I’ve gained from accumulating knowledge, I’ve become able to teach Krish-sama things she doesn’t know.
Krish-sama is great in appearance and in combat, but she’s not good at using magical tools and she’s not very good at etiquette either.
So, every time Krish-sama asks me a question, I feel like I’m useful.
“Hah… This is why I don’t want to get involved with you guys anymore.”
In front of me are my mother and brother.
My father was thrown in prison, and the Second Knights asked me what to do with my family, and I was put in charge of the interrogation.
Of course, it’s thought that as a family member I would show leniency, so it’s been decided that I will be the first to interrogate them, and then the Second Knights will do the rest.
“Mei! Release your father!”
“Neesan! What’s going on? Father’s been arrested!”
I sighed deeply as the two of them spoke to me in a reproachful tone.
“He was disrespectful to A-rank adventurer, Salt, the Holy Light, while working as a gatekeeper. He was taken to the Second Knight Brigade’s station for that offense, and there, a shocking truth was revealed.”
Yes, it was the evening the day Salt-sama headed for the Azaman territory.
When I was called to the Second Knights’ barracks along with Krish-sama, I heard that my father had said he would be leaving the Second Knights and going to the Azaman territory.
“He wants to go to the Azaman territory?”
We were greeted by Gain-sama, the leader of the Second Knights.
He had a serious and troubled look on his face.
“That’s right. It’s strange. He said he would be recognized if he went to the Azaman territory and that he had no more attachments to Corias.”
My father’s words made my blood run cold.
Currently, Gain-sama and Salt-sama are investigating the spies.
My father’s statement sounded as if he’s admitting to being a spy himself.
“That look on your face suggests you don’t know anything about this.”
“Eh?”
“Sorry, Mei. I had to suspect you as well. It’s likely your father was manipulated by an Azaman spy to pass on information. I don’t think he could serve as a spy himself, but you, on the other hand, are a different story.”
Gain-sama’s intimidation overwhelmed me.
But Krish-sama stood in front of me and protected me.
“Wait! Gain-dono. Mei isn’t the kind of girl to do something like that!”
“Vice-Commander Krish. I know you care about your comrades. And I know Mei’s not a bad person either. But isn’t it part of a spy’s job to play a good guy?”
I think Gain-sama is right.
Being assigned to the intelligence department, I’ve seen and heard all kinds of information and learned the ugliness of people.
And the more beautiful a person’s face is on the surface, the more likely they are to be secretly operating behind the scenes.
The only people I found genuinely interesting and without hidden motives were Krish-sama and Salt-sama.
“Krish-sama, you don’t need to argue on my behalf.”
“Mei?”
“Gain-sama, I can’t show you any evidence that I wasn’t involved. However, I haven’t seen my father in the last two years. The same goes for the rest of my family. We also haven’t exchanged letters or anything. I think you’ll find everything if you investigate.”
That’s all I can prove.
If my father was used by a spy to leak information more than two years ago, the spy may have had some contact with me.
So what I just said might be meaningless.
However, I believe my father didn’t exhibit any such behavior while in Corias.
“…I understand. We’ve actually already investigated that. I don’t think Mei is the culprit. But I want you both to understand that Mei is a suspect.”
“…Yes.”
Gain-sama’s words were harsh, but he is actually worried about me.
He’s Freyna-sama’s older brother, so I know he’s a kind person.
“Mei, I want you to interrogate your family. Are you alright with that?”
Gain-sama looked at Krish-sama, and Krish-sama turned her face to me.
I nodded my head in agreement.
“I understand. We will investigate Mei’s innocence.”
“Yeah, I’ll leave it to you. Honestly, it’s such a troublesome matter.”
I’m glad that Salt-sama isn’t here.
If he had been the one suspecting me… I…
My chest warmed at the thought of Salt-sama. Fufu, what am I thinking?
First I have to talk to my family and prove my innocence.
And so, I met my mother and brother, whom I hadn’t seen in a long time.
“That is the current situation. I’ll get straight to the point. You two are suspected of being spies. Father is almost certainly guilty. Mother, Hoar. If you can tell me the truth, I can settle everything. Are you two related to this?”
It’s a lie that I can settle everything.
But if they’re willing to talk because they think I might be kind to family, then I might as well use that excuse.
Even though this is the first time I met them after such a long time, my heart felt cold and frozen, unresponsive to their presence.
