Chapter 15 – The First Time I Became Interested in a Man [Mei’s POV]

[Mei’s POV]

I was born into an average, ordinary commoner family in the Corias territory.

My father belonged to the Second Knights and worked as a guard at the gate, while my mother, skilled in sewing, supported our household by working in a clothing factory.

Three years after I was born, my younger brother came into the world. My father cherished my brother simply because he was a boy.

My mother might have doted on him just because he’s the younger child.

“As the older sister, you need to be patient. Give way to your brother.”

That’s what my mother always said, and it has always stayed with me.

Being with my family isn’t fun.

So I spent more time alone and tried to practice sewing, which I learned from my mother.

But I’m not very good at it.

The first time I used a knife to cook, I was surprised at how well it turned out, and I got really happy.

I wanted my parents to praise me…

“Father! Look, I made this.”

“You’re a girl. It’s only natural that you can do that.”

“Mother.”

“I’m glad you can finally help out. It’s natural for girls to be able to cook and sew.”

My parents have never praised me.

They simply said it was expected of me.

I later realized that the reason I was so good with knives was because I had a talent for daggers.

When I turned 14, my father was transferred from his position as a gate guard to guard the border with the Second Knights Brigade. My family had to move to a town on the territory.

Contrary to her beautiful appearance, her tomboyish tone of voice showed a gap, but I liked that about her.

I wanted to follow Krish-sama! I want to get stronger and work alongside her!!

In order to become Krish-sama’s subordinate, I honed not only my combat skills, but also my cooking and investigating skills. And after a year, I was assigned to the infantry unit belonging to the vice-commander.

I felt so happy to be surrounded by such wonderful superiors as Lana-sama and Freyna-sama that I began to think that maybe I liked women, not men.

My family had also gone to the border, and peace settled in my heart.

But life doesn’t always go smoothly.

I thought I had died, but when I woke up, I was surrounded by my comrades.

“You’re awake, Mei.”

“Krish-sama?”

“We’ve been saved.”

“Saved?”

A man was sleeping on Krish-sama’s lap.

His face looked innocent, making him look foolish.

“I’m sorry. I left halfway through the battle.”

“What are you talking about, Mei?! It was because you were there that I was able to do my best. I should be grateful, you shouldn’t be apologizing.”

I really love Krish-sama.

After that, she told me how I’d been saved, and I learned from Krish-sama how much Salt-sama had sacrificed himself to save us both.

And it seems that my first kiss had been stolen from me.

The moment I heard that Salt-sama had fed me the blood replenishing potion mouth-to-mouth, I found myself looking at the sleeping Salt-sama’s lips.

For some reason, I felt embarrassed, but I also felt…curious. I could feel my body getting hot.

I had never been interested in men until now.

But then this man stole my kiss, saved my life, and when we greeted each other…

“My name is Mei. I will be your guide.”

When Lana-sama asked me to become Salt-sama’s assistant along with Krish-sama, I couldn’t help but quietly celebrate.

It was the first time I had become interested in a man.

“As of today, I, Mei, has been assigned as Salt-sama.”

“Yes, I’m counting on you, Mei. I feel like I’ve been with you the longest, please continue to help me.”

“Yes! Of course. Where are we headed next?”

“It seems there’s a place near the town border where the miasma is getting thicker. Can you guide us there?”

“Eh?! Near the town border?”

The faces of my parents came to mind, and a cold sweat ran down my back.
