Chapter 10 – My Savior [Krish’s POV]
[Krish’s POV]
Two years ago, I turned sixteen and had been living my life desperately until then.
I cut my hair short and dressed as a man.
The Corias territory was never a good place to live in.
It was rural enough to be suitable for the word “frontier”, undeveloped and backward.
Actually, it was a good town for nobles and those from elsewhere.
It had an Adventurer’s Guild and the lodgings were well-equipped.
But people who lived in the slums received nothing back.
The Lord of the territory, Earl Corias, lived in the Capital and only ruled at the bare minimum.
So, the wealth gap between merchants and the affluent led to high crime rates.
But then a savior appeared.
The First Knights, who had been acting as they pleased, were sent to the Capital as guards for the Lord.
The knights who had been oppressed as the Second and Third Knight Brigades were given the duty of guarding the borders and territories, thus fulfilling their role as knights.
Lana-sama, together with the Second and Third Knight Brigades, eradicated the crimes that had been rampant in the Corias territory, such as fraud and embezzlement. She suppressed a lot of opposition and created the Fourth Knight Brigade.
The Fourth Knight Brigade is made up entirely of women. This call gave hope to me, who had been living in the slums.
From a young age, I had been scavenging through garbage.
There were many dangerous situations where I would be in danger if I didn’t disguise myself as a man, and slave traders were always on the watch.
A society where only men are privileged.
To change that, Lana-sama established the Fourth Knight Brigade composed only of women. She recruited people regardless of whether they lived in the slums or were orphans.
I was recruited simply because I was a woman from the slums with nothing. At first, I couldn’t speak, wield a sword, or do anything. I was probably a foul-mouthed person with a bad attitude.
“You are desperate to live, aren’t you? But from now on, women will create society, show strength, and support the territory. Will you join us too?”
Lana-sama’s words told me that I was needed.
She didn’t look at me as someone who lived in the slums. She saw me as a person.
That’s why I wanted to become Lana-sama’s sword.
In order to live as a sword, I studied etiquette, trained in swordsmanship, and worked harder than anyone else.
But I lacked something essential. Attribute.
I can’t even express in words how much I despaired.
But Freyna-sama said to me.
“Krish, no one has worked harder than you to develop a talent for the sword. You are my pride. Even if you are attributeless, you would be someone I’m proud to have as the Vice-commander of the Fourth Knight Brigade, which is why I’ve recommended you for the position. You are wonderful enough just the way you are.”
Those words support me even now.
I could gladly offer my life when Lana-sama was in danger.
Facing the Wraith King, even though I knew my sword wouldn’t do anything, I could challenge the undead.
Lana-sama told me that I was needed.
Freyna-sama said that she was proud of me.
Fighting the Wraith King, I felt that it would be okay if I died here.
For the sake of these two people I care about, I would not hesitate to sacrifice my life.
I had made up my mind, but… I was saved by Salt-dono.
As a knight, I wanted to repay Salt-dono for his kindness.
But then, Lana-sama and Freyna-sama said that I should do more than just repay his kindness.
I was told to recruit Salt-sama so that he would join us.
With resolve, I intended to get Towa’s help and accompany Salt-dono on his request.
“It’s not that Krish-san has no attribute. You have an attribute that only you have. So be proud of it. Krish-san’s attributeless is strong.”
Until now, everyone thought that attributeless people were beings that couldn’t use magic.
No one had ever said that people with no attributes were strong.
There was someone who said it was something to be proud of. But there was no one who said it was okay to be proud of it.
People only looked at me as if I were a liability. Even after becoming the Vice-commander of the Fourth Knight Brigade, many looked down on me because I had no attribute.
Hearing Salt-dono denying all of that, I didn’t know how to respond.
“Salt-dono.”
“Yeah?”
“You really are a strange man.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, being proud of having no attributes, that’s…”
I couldn’t say anything more.
“Mei, let’s get going now.”
“Y-yes!”
I know Mei is looking at me.
But as we get back in the carriage, I can’t help but stare at Salt-dono’s back as he drives the carriage.
“We’re here.”
The miasma is getting thicker, and we’re getting closer to the dragon zombie’s lair.
Still, I’m somewhat skeptical.
Salt-dono said that attributeless abilities are strong, but I won’t be convinced unless it’s proven.
“Krish-san, Mei, I’ll leave it to you to clear the rest.”
A swarm of orc zombies is gathering in front of the dragon zombie.
“Leave it to us.”
“Yes.”
I clad my sword in attributelessness and slashed at the orc zombie.
Until now, I’d been slashing without thinking.
But for the first time, I felt a sense of accomplishment.
Mei’s wind blades left marks on the orc zombies, but they still got up.
But the orc zombies I slashed with attributelessness didn’t rise again.
That must be what it is.
The attributeless power that Salt-dono had explained to me is a power that truly has no weaknesses and can counter every attribute.
I may not be able to do anything special.
But I can do what others can’t.
“Bring it on, I, Krish, Vice-commander of the Fourth Knight Brigade, will pave the way for Salt-dono!!”
I’ve never felt so proud of myself.
It’s the first time I’ve been glad to have been born attributeless.
