After returning home from school, Aoi changed into his casual jersey and tried to do his homework by spreading textbooks and notes on the table.
However, the pain was so intense that he couldn’t even hold a pencil. His right wrist had turned red after lunch, and he ended up going to the infirmary where they applied a poultice and treated him.
The school nurse mentioned there didn’t seem to be any abnormality in the bones, but if the pain persisted, it might be better to consult a hospital.
Unable to take proper notes during the afternoon classes, he asked Keisuke to let him copy the notes in the faculty room. While the notes were accessible, not being able to do homework was distressing.
“Can I come in, Nii-san?”
Knock, knock. Aoi heard the sound of a knock on the door and Runa’s voice, so he said, “Go ahead.” The door opened slowly, and Runa, wearing a black dress over a white blouse, entered.
“What’s wrong?”
Runa’s presence in Aoi’s room was unusual, so something significant must have happened.
“Is your wrist okay?”
Her red eyes were focused on the bandaged wrist. Her face looked sorrowful, as if she blamed herself for avoiding him and causing the injury.
“I’m fine. I was just about to start my homework… Agh…”
Again, he couldn’t hold the pen due to the pain. The wrist, though not visibly red, made it impossible to write properly.
“You’re not okay. Should we go to the hospital?”
“No need.”
Since it was just a sprain, rest was the best remedy. Besides, he didn’t want to waste money on medical expenses for something that would heal with time.
To reassure Runa, he endured the pain and held the pen with his right hand. Despite the pain distorting his expression, he held the pen firmly without letting go.
“Looks like it can’t be helped. Make sure you hold the pen in your left hand.”
Runa approached me with an expression of dismay on her face.
She had given up on taking me to the hospital, but I don’t know why she was coming here.
“Oh~ Maybe you want to flirt with me?”
“Are you an idiot?”
When I imitated a comedian doing a narcissistic skit to the rhythm of music, I was stared at with eyes full of disdain.
“Your Nii-san is sad to receive a serious response to his joke…”
“Okay, okay, enough with the jokes. Hurry up and hold the pen with your left hand.”
With a sigh-mixed remark, Aoi obediently nodded and held the pen with his left hand. However, since it wasn’t his dominant hand, it resulted in an awkward grip, and at this rate, he would undoubtedly write characters that no one could read.
“Well, it can’t be helped. But before we start the homework, can you stop the voice playing from your phone?”
“Impossible. I always listen to your voice and look at your pictures when I’m alone in my room.”
When Runa wasn’t around, Aoi found it difficult to muster motivation, so he edited and compiled her recorded voice on his computer, making it accessible on his phone anytime he wanted.
“Nii-san, do you prefer the recorded voice over the real voice?”
“What are you talking about? Of course, I prefer the real one.”
To prove it, he immediately stopped the voice playing on his phone. He couldn’t resist the sad tone in her voice.
“Okay, let’s get started on the homework.”
“What will you do? I can’t write properly with my left hand either, and even with my right hand now.”
“We’ll do it like this.”
Coming around from behind, Runa laid her hand on top of Aoi’s left hand, holding the pen. It was warm, or rather, it felt quite hot, probably from embarrassment.
“I’ll support you by placing my hand on yours.”
He heard a voice, mixed with a shy sigh, near his ear. Perhaps due to the embarrassment, her hand felt warmer.
It might be because she thought that she wouldn’t have injured her brother if she hadn’t avoided him, that she felt embarrassed about going to such lengths.
Since Aoi isn’t used to Runa in his room, the overwhelming happiness seems to have made him lose strength.
“Ni… Nii-san?”
Although he leaned back, supporting his back against Runa, she let out a loud voice, possibly surprised. It’s quite rare for her to make such a surprised sound, as she is usually composed.
“I can’t exert strength when you touch me, Runa.”
“Stop saying that and let’s do the homework.”
“Got it.”
With the certainty that homework needs to be done, Aoi adjusted his posture.
“Today’s Math, right? I’m just here to support, so please solve the problems.”
“All right.”
Despite relying on Runa’s hand, Aoi managed to write characters in the notebook. The handwriting wasn’t as good as when he wrote with his right hand, but with Runa’s support, he was able to produce readable letters.
