“Damn it!!”
*Thud*
As the echoes of a cracking wall travels underground, the sight of four people in the sewers were found dreadfully hopeless.
“…I can’t believe they got caught!” said Tyson as he was showing his clear aggravation to the situation.
“How did they know about our location…we made sure to keep our presence to a minimum.” said Louis as he was curious to this tragic turn of events.
“…They captured the other six. Its clear now to assume that demon must have some sort of way of knowing that we were infiltrating its palace.” said Shirley as she was looking over a gap in the sewers.
“Look, there’s barely anyone out in the streets…only guards by the dozens are keeping eyes and their wearing mask over their faces and not a single civilian in sight, just like in the pier. What does that mean?” said Martin as he too was keeping sight of the situation on the street.
“…Hmm, I don’t know. But I have a bad feeling that we don’t have much time before things get serious…their probably interrogating the other six right about now for trespassing. It’s already worse that they were found near the entrance of that kingdom, but we still have a chance at doing our roles.” said Tyson.
“But its weird though, out of all places, the kingdom’s two mages were waiting for us at the back entrance of the castle…was it coincidence?” asked Louis.
“…like I said, the demon must have already figured out our location.” said Shirley.
Thinking back to the whole situation, just as the ten imperial dragons were infiltrating the castle through the back entrance, they were meet with a sudden intrusion of a battalion of guards and two mages.
It would have been easy to take on the guards, but knowing that mages were included in this fight, Orion didn’t take the chance of having them all face the battalion, so he gave the order to let the four people in charge of taking care of the princess to immediately run to hide. It didn’t take long before the six were captured by the two mages, but the four had already escaped into the sewers.
“…nonetheless, we have to take care of the princess. We need to find a way into getting to her before we get caught…” said Tyson.
Outside the sewers, as they continued to wait for their opportunity to strike, a couple of guards went by and chatted to pass the time.
“Say, so what did we find out about those bastards?” asked Guard A.
“…I heard that they were from the Dragon Empire.” said Guard B.
“The Dragon Empire? What are they doing here?” said Guard A.
“…Not sure, but I heard that these weren’t just some simple knights, all six of them were part of a group called the Imperial Dragons. Hahaha, to think that they were caught so easily. The dragon Empire might not be so strong after all.” said Guard B.
“…So what did the General do? Will they be punished?” asked Guard A.
“…Worse, I heard that the king made the declaration to hang them. He said that he felt threatened by their presence.” said Guard B.
“Hang them!?” the Guard A was surprised to hearing this.
“”!!??”” all four of the knights in the sewers were caught surprised by this information.
“General said that the hanging would be done early tomorrow.” said Guard B.
“Isn’t it a bit to early? They haven’t even made the plea to ask for help from their own kingdom. Normally even someone who robbed from the palace’s treasury would get 60 days of penalty before he would get hanged, but them? Tomorrow at sun rise seems like its being rushed.” said Guard A.
“I hear you, but its not our decision to make. Now come on, we got to make sure we make our rounds at the kingdom before the sun sets.” said Guard B.
And with it, the two guards left.
And back to the four knights, they were found nervously sweating in the sewers.
“I can’t believe this…we have to save them!” shouted Tyson.
“Keep your voice down.” said Martin as he tries to warn Tyson out of his worries.
“Calm down? We don’t have much time…we can’t just let this happen.” said Tyson.
“I understand, but I’m sure that its not as easy to break into a jail cell when its quite clear to imagine that it would be heavily guarded.” said Martin.
“And the princess is also a priority.” said Shirley.
“…We should split ourselves into two groups then. One going for the princess and one going for the six members. We have to abandon the thought of assassinating the demon since it seems unlikely.” said Louis as he wanted to fasten the idea of prioritization.
“The Army will be arriving in a couple of days right about now, by then, it would be too late to save the knights.” said Tyson.
“Hmm, so how should we split ourselves?” asked Martin.
“I’m going to save my brother, so I’m going to the jail cell. and I’m not accepting anything else.” said Tyson.
“Fine, then me and Shirley well go to find the princess. Martin you go with him since you can sneak in more quietly than we could.” said Louis.
“Fine. But I don’t think we should act immediately, doing this operation by day is suicide…we should wait by night.” said Martin.
“Huh!?…F-fine.” said Tyson.
“For now, we should find out what’s going on in the streets, its really suspicious how not a lot of people are in the area.” said Shirley.
With it, the four went and prepared themselves for the night to come while also looking into the situation on the Hearts kingdom.
But somewhere in a tower of the castle, the sight of a tired princess was seen with her hands bleeding and her foot sprained.
I’ve caused my people enough hardships as it is…
The only solution to end the Demon from his motivation…is the lost of my life…
So I’m sorry father, but if I continue to live as I am…war is inevitable. No one will ever be happy…only the demon will remain smiling in the end.
I know you sent your knights to find me…but it is impossible to find my body and soul…the demon made sure to keep me only in his eyes.
So please go back home…All of you.
Prioritize yourself instead of someone like me…
Said the princess as she founds herself sitting in front of a mirror.
“My my, how are you, my bride?” asked the sunken face of a rotting king.
“…Go to hell.” said the princess as she turns to where the demon stood.
“I’ve captured six of your lovely knights…ready to be hanged on the rise of the sun'”
“*Gasp!*” the princess gasped at this information.
“Let them go! At this instant!” she screamed.
“…if you offer me your hand, I might accept.” said the Demon.
“…”
“My, is it so unbecoming of you to accept my proposal? Its in the exchange of their lives…and so much more.” said the Demon as he face the princess with his rotting face.
“…I know who you are.” said the princess.
“Oh? And who might I be?” he asked.
“Your the Count of Pestilence…Count Pestilus who serves under the Demon King. The king and Enemy to all living existence of Astra.” she said.
“…wonderful, to think that my bride would know of my existence…as a prize, why not accept this ring.” he said as he pulls out a ring made of bones from his ribcage and handed it to the princess.
“…” but the princess simply sat on her chair with a defying glare.
“Hmm, how will I ever convince you? I’ve watched you since you were but a newborn…and now that you are of age, I finally have the chance to bless you with a ring and a promise that is filled with my love. My love is pure Abegail…my love for you.” said the Demon as he touches his rotting hands on her cheeks to show his admiration for her beauty.
“Get away from me Demon! I will never accept your hand!” she said as she smacks away his hand.
“…hmm, I see.” being denied, the Demon turned his back away from the princess and made his way to a wall.
“…Ah, before I could leave, I hear that a certain army is visiting my kingdom…five days from now, I might show them something worth their time….if you know what I mean.” said the Demon as he moved forward from his words and unto the wall.
But as he approached the wall, it did not collide with his body but instead he simply went through it like one’s body passing through a river.
And there, the princess was left to her own in the tower, in a room with no doors to escape from. Only a window was in her source of light.
And as she looked outside, she could only sigh as the sight of a sun setting was sign of another day ending.
“…I want to go home.” she said as tears fell from her eyes.
***
A couple of hours later…
Out near the ocean, the sight of a beautiful mirage of a goddess was in front of my eyes
“…” being taken away by her majestic figure, I could not help but freeze in the reality of this situation.
“Who are you?” she asked.
“I…uhh…S-shay. My name is Shay.” and finally after taking the effort to gather myself, I spoke to her.
“You are not my creation…I do not feel a sense of connection within you to me.”
“W-why do you say that?” I asked.
“I am the Goddess of Life, one who blesses each creation with my own authority. For each life, I harbor a connection, but you, I do not feel anything…so I ask again, who are you?”
“…Shay Winston.” I said with a straight face.
“…You do not lie, but I question you this…where you born in this world?”
“…I…I was..”
“You lie.” in that tone of hers, it was filled with a pressure so profound, it was like I was in front of Jesus. In other words, I could not lie.
“Okay, yes. I wasn’t born in this world…” I said truthfully.
“Then who are you Shay Winston?” she asked.
“…a man brought into this world by a book.” I said.
“Hmm, you don’t seem to lie. Tell me, what is this book that brought you here?” she asked.
“The-” but before I could finish, chain of a transparent light came out of nowhere and came down to wrap my very mouth.
“!!?” being gagged, I was unable to answer her and most of all, the pain that I felt within these chains were strong enough that I could feel my jaw breaking at any moment.
Using mana to reinforce my body, I struggled to keep myself alive from these chains before they could break me.
and while the Goddess watched as I struggled, she looked at the chains in question and turned to me with a suggestion.
“…Do not struggle. Let the chains be and you might just live.” she said.
‘What!?’ and to my bewilderment in her suggestion, I could not do anything as the chains were getting stronger and stronger… to a point that I lost my balance and I fell to the ground. Then and there, the chains were wrapping around my head as it pulled me down.
Even with the strength that could push the great eden walls open, I was helpless.
To see myself in such a situation, I looked to the Goddess and saw that I had no other choice in the matter. Even if I struggled…I will die by these chains.
So taking in the words of a God, I let go of all my struggles and accepted my fate, but as I did, chains wrapped all over my face like a towel and with it, I lost the ability to breath..
I might die…
I will die…
Why?
Why!?
I asked myself this as all I could see was the darkness, wrapped by the chains…as I began to lose consciousness.
But within that dark view, I felt the warm embrace of a hand that came to whisper itself down on my cheek…and within that embrace, I saw a light…
A light that began to grow as seconds went by…and as it did, I heard the crackling noise of chains being pulled away…
And with that, all I saw within my front was the full moon.
“…”
“Hmm, tell me, who are you Shay Winston?” asked the voice of the Goddess.
“…I-” but before I could speak, the memory of those chains began to appear in my mind, reminding me that I could not say the truth.
The book…
It was protecting itself from being known to the Gods…
That was the conclusion I came to see when I was asked the question of my identity or why I was not from this world at least…
“…I can’t say.” I said.
“I can see why. So don’t let it bother you.” she said. Being sympathetic and all…
“…” for once, I had known fear coming from the Book’s power… and with it, I came to feel a sense of distrust from it.
I kept silent by then and only answered when spoken too, for because I felt fear within the truth behind the book’s judgement to do why it did so. It made me feel worry over my own life. And to think that this book that gave me a second chance and would simply abandon me for the fact that it wants to keep it’s secrets…
I want to live Goddam it!
So I’ll keep quiet.
I just hope the book understands this…
“Do you know who I am?” she asked.
“I do…I’ve heard of you.” I said.
“…I’m the Goddess of life, bringer of life to all creations.”
“Why did you come for me?” I asked.
“You have the hand capable of bringing my soul into its reincarnation.” she said.
“.…”
“…and also because I came here under your desire…” she said.
“…My desire?”
“You want to save your friends, don’t you?” she said.
“…What is it that you can give me?”
“Become the Guardian that watches over my seed…and with it, I’ll grant you my power to vanquish the necessary evil, to bring life as it is…to make what is necessary under my authority.” she said.
“…A blessing.”
“Yes.” she answered.
“…I don’t see any other way…but tell me, do you know anyone by the name of Vendigo?”
“…Ah yes, Percival, I know of him.”
“Is he alive?” I asked.
“…he is.”
“…I see. I want to ask you more questions of possible, but for now, I have a more important matter at hand.” I said.
“Very well, by now, I can see that you are the only one who has the chance to change the course of flow from the disasters that may come…I grant you my first blessing, defeat the demon and we may consul on the idea of where we go from here.” she said.
And with it, she touched my cheek again, and it glowed like a firefly only to disappear a second later. And along with that disappearing light, she was also gone.
By then, everything went back to the way it was…
The ocean was waving, the trees were shaking and the air was flowing…
Time has turned to its state and the stead was there by my side.
“…AK, what did you do to me?” I asked the book.
But the book did not answer.
“…” and I was silent to that answer.
Having done nothing to this sense of distrust from the book, I turned to where the castle was supposedly and turned to look at my profile.
