Chapter 88 The Two Disciples Go to Sea
◆Mion & Dona◆
After being sent off by Croix, the two arrived at the gate with the army commander.
Mion seemed nervous about the long-awaited real combat, but Dona appeared surprisingly calm. However, this calmness was only on the surface; the flames of revenge flickered in his eyes.
“Dona, are you okay?”
“Yes, I’m calm.”
“…I see.”
To Mion, that calmness was even more frightening. Normally, one wouldn’t be able to stay calm in front of someone they seek revenge against.
As Mion felt uneasy about Dona, the army commander turned to them.
“Dona, Mion. We will be on alert around the country, but what will you two do? Croix said he would leave it to you.”
“Yes, Commander. We’ll head to the sea gang’s hideout.”
(As expected.)
Mion sighed inwardly at Dona’s words. Neptune’s water detection had failed to pinpoint the sea gang’s hideout. This meant the hideout was somewhere on land, which the fishmen couldn’t locate no matter how much they searched.
However, Wiel had used magic to find the hideout just recently and had informed them in advance. So, if they wanted to, they could go immediately. Though Mion really didn’t want to.
Unaware of Mion’s true feelings, Dona was full of determination. Seeing this, the army commander nodded slowly.
“Understood… In that case, I’ll assemble a team of ten or so from the army. Even if you two are strong, there could be unforeseen circumstances. Wait about an hour.”
“Thank you, Commander. But there’s no need to worry… We’ll handle it on our own.”
The murderous intent and hostility in Dona’s words left the commander momentarily speechless.
Dona bowed to the commander and leaped through the gate, heading outside the country. Mion hurried to follow, but the commander stopped him, saying, “Wait.”
“Mion, Dona is currently narrow-focused on the target. I will send the assembled squad later, but until then, please look after Dona.”
“…Yes, leave it to me. Although the time is short, he is an important junior.”
In any case, if Mion were to abandon Dona here, he couldn’t imagine what Croix would say. Abandoning Dona wasn’t even an option.
Mion bowed to the commander and hurriedly dove into the water gate to catch up with Dona. With Wiel’s magic, she was protected from underwater breathing issues and water pressure.
So, she relied on her physical abilities to swim through the ocean…
“He’s so fast…!?”
Dona was already swimming far ahead. Although barely visible, his speed was extraordinary.
Mion, being a rabbitfolk, had confidence in her physical abilities. She was good at swimming and thought she could swim quite fast by focusing her leg strength.
After a month of grueling training with Croix, her leg strength had improved further. However, even so, she couldn’t catch up with the pure-blooded fishman and could only do her best to keep up without being left behind.
(I lose to Croix-sama in speed on land, and now I lose to my junior in speed in the sea… My confidence is really taking a hit.)
But there was no time to be dejected. She could only focus on chasing Dona through the water.
Diving took quite a while, but reaching the surface didn’t take as long. The surroundings gradually brightened as sunlight started to pierce through.
And then—she emerged onto the surface.
“…Ah, it feels good…”
After about a month, being outside again felt refreshing. Breathing in the fresh air was exhilarating. The sunlight was warm, and the distant cries of birds flying high were nostalgic.
She was a bit moved, but it wasn’t the time for sentimentality. Looking around, Dona was swimming in one direction.
But now that she was on the surface, Mion could match Dona’s speed. Using water-walking magic to stand on the water, she chased Dona across the surface.
After running for a few minutes, Mion finally caught up to Dona, who looked up at her with wide eyes.
“Eh, big sister, why are you running on the surface of the sea!?”
“Well, various things happened. I was trained by Croix-sama and Wiel-sama.”
“Training with those two makes you able to run on the sea? What kind of training did you undergo…”
“I… I don’t want to remember.”
A certain kind of trauma was etched into Mion’s heart.
“Anyway, let’s hurry!”
“Yes!”
