Chapter 109 The Ghost Disappears
The morning of the fourth day since Croix and the others arrived at the inn had come.
Having enjoyed their time together without interruption, Croix sat drinking tea and gazing out the window.
His body felt pleasantly tired—neither too lethargic nor overly relaxed.
Wiel, sitting across from him, seemed flushed from her bath, with her cheeks and neck slightly reddened.
She took a sip of milk from a bottle and let out a gentle sigh.
“Ah… it’s a nice morning. The ghosts seem to be drifting about happily as well.”
“Indeed. That’s good to hear.”
Following Wiel’s gaze, Croix looked in the same direction.
There was nothing there. Only the mist-covered forest was visible.
The chirping of small birds, the murmuring of the river, and the rustling of the trees.
That was all there was—no sign of ghosts.
Right. Croix himself couldn’t see ghosts.
He didn’t sense their presence, nor did he experience any sensations like a heavy shoulder.
Simply put, he had zero sensitivity to spirits.
Wiel, on the other hand, seemed to have a strong natural sensitivity, allowing her to see ghosts without using any magic.
“Really, they’re such adorable children. Wouldn’t you like to see them?”
“No, I’m fine. I’ll pass.”
“There’s no need to be so scared.”
“I’m not scared. There’s nothing that frightens me.”
“Even if you hide it from me, it’s pointless.”
Seeing Wiel laugh happily, Croix turned his gaze away.
He wasn’t scared. He wasn’t scared at all. But if faced with the choice to see or not see, he would definitely choose not to see.
That distance felt just right. There was no need to intentionally get closer.
The decision to stay here was made with consideration for Wiel and Mion, who were likely tired.
It wasn’t about not wanting to reveal his fear or putting on a brave front.
Absolutely not.
“Anyway, I’m starting to get hungry. Let’s ask Titi to make us some food.”
“Oh, it’s alright. I asked Titi-sama to prepare something while I was in the bath, so it should be ready soon—”
“Excuse me.”
At that moment, Titi entered the room with other maids.
A tray was laden with various dishes, and the aromas stimulated their appetites.
Knowing Croix’s large appetite, there was quite a substantial amount of food, which was much appreciated given his current state of fatigue.
“Wiel-sama, would you like your meal served in your room?”
“Yes. Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
Titi and the other maids quickly set up the dishes.
Noticing Titi’s nose twitch slightly as she stared at her, Croix also saw her cheeks were slightly flushed.
It was evident without much thought—it was probably because of the lingering smells.
Few living people stayed at this inn. Maybe once a year, if that.
Moreover, even when they did stay, it was usually only one or two people. The smell of such aftermath must be unfamiliar to them.
After setting everything up, the maids left the room, leaving only Titi behind.
“Shall I explain the dishes?”
“I’m fine, thank you.”
“Me too. Titi, you can leave now.”
“Understood. If you need anything, please let me know.”
When Titi opened the sliding door and stepped into the hallway, she seemed to hesitate, as if unsure whether to say something. After a moment of resolve, she spoke.
“Uh, you must have had a great time last night…!”
“Not just last night. It’s been three days and nights.”
“I-I apologize!”
Titi’s face turned bright red, and she quickly closed the door and left.
It seemed she wanted to say a standard line, but it ended up being a complete failure.
“Hehe. Titi-sama is quite cute.”
“She’s probably not used to this sort of thing. Well, let’s eat.”
“Yes!”
Wiel, with a blissful expression, stuffed her mouth with the food.
The cuisine here is always delicious. Croix also believes that there is no better food than what they serve here.
The two enjoyed their leisurely time together.
Then, a clattering noise came from the hallway.
The footsteps belonged to Mion.
“C-Croix-sama, Wiel-sama…!”
Mion burst into the room, her face pale and clearly flustered.
“Mion-chan, what’s the matter?”
“Well, it’s that, um, when I woke up this morning, everyone was gone…!”
“Gone? …Oh, could it be…”
Wiel began counting on his fingers, and then, noticing something, looked over at Croix.
“Yes. —It’s the day of the trial.”
