Chapter 48 – Cat and Mouse
【Reina PoV】
The door opened without a sound.
My fingers barely brushed the cold stone. I fed a single, delicate thread of mana into the central rune, reversing its polarity. The angry purple glow died instantly, the ancient magic snuffed out like a candle flame. The massive slab of rock, which had theatrically repelled my earlier spell, swung inward on silent, well-oiled hinges. A pathetic defense for a pathetic man.
A wave of stale, cold air washed over me. It smelled of damp earth, decay, and the faint, metallic scent of fear. I smiled. He was in here.
I slipped through the opening, my dagger a sliver of moonlight in my hand. The door swung shut behind me, sealing me in the absolute darkness. It did not matter. The world was perfectly clear to my senses. Every loose stone, every drop of water from the ceiling, every skittering insect in the cracks.
This was my element.
The tunnels were rough-hewn, a maze of twisting corridors. My footsteps were silent on the uneven stone floor. This was not a hunt. It was an extermination. A necessary cleansing. Siegfried was filth. A liar who had dared to stand in the same light as Ryuuji, who had endangered him with his greed.
Ryuuji, in his infinite, radiant kindness, had chosen to show mercy. It was his most beautiful and dangerous quality. He saw the potential for good in everyone. But I saw the world for what it was. I saw the insects that needed to be crushed before they could scurry back and bite the hand that spared them.
My promise to him was a necessary tool. A soothing balm for his gentle heart. But my true vow, the one that guided my every action, was to his safety. A flimsy promise could never outweigh that sacred duty.
A low growl echoed from the shadows ahead.
Two pinpricks of red light appeared in the darkness. A dungeon crawler, a beast of living stone and shadow, blocked the path. It was large, easily twice the size of Daisuke, its body a misshapen parody of a wolf. It was an obstacle. An irrelevance.
The crawler lunged. I was already behind it. I placed two fingers on the back of its rocky skull and pulsed a tiny, precise burst of chaotic energy.
The red light in its eyes vanished. The creature froze mid-stride, then crumbled into a pile of dust and pebbles. The silence that followed was heavy. Deeper.
I continued on, stepping through the dust without a thought.
The path ahead split into three. I paused, closing my eyes and extending my senses. To the left, nothing. To the right, goblins.
Straight ahead.
There. Faint. The lingering scent of cheap cologne and sweat. He was close. His continued existence was an insult to Ryuuji’s compassion. I would rectify that error.
The corridor opened into a vast cavern. The ceiling was lost in darkness high above. In the center of the chamber stood a hulking figure, previously dormant. It was an Ancient Golem, its stone body covered in faded, dormant runes. Its single, crystalline eye flared to life with a menacing red glow, detecting my presence. It was a true guardian, far more dangerous than the mindless beasts near the entrance.
“Intruder detected. Hostile entity. Eradication protocol engaged.”
The Golem’s voice was the grinding of tombstones. It raised a massive stone arm, the runes on its chassis glowing with stored power. This was a real threat. A being that could have easily killed Kenji or Daisuke.
It was also in my way.
The Golem fired a beam of pure concussive energy. It tore through the air, superheating the rock behind me. I sidestepped it easily, the motion fluid and economical. I did not have time for a protracted battle.
I vanished from my spot, reappearing directly in front of the Golem’s torso. My dagger was coated in a thin sheen of corrosive dark magic. I plunged it deep into the Golem’s chest, directly into its central power core.
The crystalline eye flashed wildly. The runes on its body pulsed with uncontrolled energy. A high-pitched whine filled the cavern, growing in intensity. It was going to explode.
I was already moving, using the Golem’s shoulder as a launchpad to propel myself toward the far exit. I was mid-air when the Golem detonated.
The explosion was immense. A blinding flash of light was followed by a deafening roar as thousands of pounds of enchanted stone and raw magic were blown apart. The shockwave slammed into me, but I was already shielded. Shards of rock, sharp as blades, ricocheted throughout the cavern.
The sound was apocalyptic. A deep, grinding, metallic crash that thundered back up the tunnel I’d come from, carrying all the way to the outside world.
I landed softly on the other side of the chamber, not a scratch on me. Behind me, the cavern was a wreck of shattered stone.
The noise was regrettable, but unavoidable. A small price to pay for efficiency.
Now, with the final guard disposed of, it was time to find the rat.
【Ryuuji PoV】
A crash echoed from the mountain.
My eyes snapped open. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat in the dead quiet of the night. The sound was distant but immense. A deep, grinding, explosive sound. Unnatural.
I sat up, my senses on high alert. The embers of the fire glowed faintly, casting long, dancing shadows around our small camp. Nothing moved.
My breathing was harsh in the silence. I told myself to calm down. It was probably nothing. This whole place was creepy. My nerves were just shot from the stress of managing my own brilliant, convoluted plan.
But a cold, greasy feeling slithered into my gut. Something was wrong. Deeply wrong.
My gaze swept across the campsite. Kenji was dead to the world, a faint snore escaping his lips. Daisuke was a motionless lump in his bedroll, a mountain of quiet loyalty.
Then I saw it.
The empty space.
Reina’s bedroll was empty. But it wasn’t messy. It wasn’t thrown aside like she’d been dragged away. It was neat. The blanket was folded. As if she had gotten up, tidied her space, and simply walked away.
The cold feeling in my gut turned to ice.
My mind raced, connecting the dots with horrifying speed. The explosive crash from the direction of the dungeon. Reina’s obsessive, barely-concealed bloodlust. Her promise, which I suddenly realized was worth absolutely nothing.
The door. She had opened the door. The whole performance earlier was a lie. A show to get us to stand down. To get us to sleep.
She was inside.
My blood ran cold. The whole plan. My perfect, necessary rival. My future betrayal arc. Siegfried, the golden goose of my entire revenge fantasy, was trapped in a stone box with a high-level yandere who had a kill order in her eyes.
No.
No, no, no, no.
That lunatic. That terrifying, smiling, hyper-competent lunatic.
She was going to ruin everything.
