Chapter 61: Night March Training (Transfer ②) – Lieutenant Kawana’s Concerns
“Do you think… something happened…?”
“W-What do you mean by ‘something’…”
Narumi’s waist and spine bent like a willow branch. Her breath came out like steam.
Lieutenant Kawana didn’t seem to notice. She brought her lips even closer to the Sergeant’s ear. Narumi’s body trembled violently.
“For example… something regarding this training…”
“Waa… Amazing view…!”
Not only the Lieutenant and Sergeant, but all 24 female soldiers crammed into the cargo bed looked up at the sudden excited voice. The owner of the voice was Sergeant Major Nagato Kai.
He was the only one kneeling upright. He had been gazing at the scenery outside through the small vinyl window in the khaki-colored truck canopy.
Right after departure, his behavior had been a hot topic among the female soldiers, but after an hour, everyone had come to accept it as completely normal.
“S-Sorry…”
Noticing all the eyes on him, he apologized.
“I’ve lived on an island my whole life, so mountain scenery like this is really rare for me…”
Those words brought bright light back into the eyes of the female soldiers, who had looked half-dead moments before. At the same time, the familiar pink mist began to rise thickly above their heads.
“Aaah… Seriously…! Sergeant Major…!”
Mita, moved by the pink mist filling the shaking cargo bed, stood up. She quickly opened her camouflage jacket.
“I love you too much…!”
She leaped at Nagato and wrapped her arms around his neck, deliberately pressing her braless breasts against his face through her T-shirt.
“Mmmph…!”
Nagato groaned as his vision was suddenly blocked and his nose and mouth were smothered by soft, jiggling flesh.
“Ah…! Sergeant Major… If you move so much…!”
“Hey… Mita…!”
The surrounding female soldiers raised their voices, unable to watch any longer. Lieutenant Kawana remained silent, observing.
She assumed the other soldiers would stop Mita.
“That’s not fair…!”
“Yeah, let go…! The Sergeant Major looks troubled…!”
But the soldiers who seemed to be intervening were acting strangely.
“Sergeant Major~…!”
“Me too~…!”
As if their rationality had snapped, the female soldiers began leaping onto Nagato one after another. A muffled “Uguu…” leaked out from beneath the pile of camouflaged women.
“Get off…! You’re heavy… Ouch…!”
Private First Class Mita, being crushed together with Nagato, let out a scream-like voice. However, the women showed no signs of stopping.
By now, almost all of them had joined the human pile. What broke the mountain of female bodies was a violent vibration and crashing sound far worse than the terrible road.
『A hole opened in the floor of the cargo bed…!』
That thought crossed nearly everyone’s mind. The women who had been moaning in delight froze instantly.
When they fearfully looked up, they saw Lieutenant Kawana standing tall like a guardian deity, wearing a demonic expression.
The tip of her right foot was deeply embedded into the iron plate of the truck bed, several centimeters thick.
“Return to your seats…! You damn sluts…!”
They understood that defying her would result in having their tongues pulled out. Even the women who had been swallowed by the pink mist regained some sanity. They hurriedly returned to their original seats.
“Mita…”
The Private First Class, who had been buried under the women along with Nagato, finally stood up. Her uniform was open and her hair disheveled, yet her arms were still firmly wrapped around Nagato’s neck.
“I’ll think about your punishment slowly later… Prepare yourself…”
Mita’s arms dropped limply. It seemed the Lieutenant’s words had hit her unusually hard.
She weakly replied, “Yes… I’m sorry…” and returned to her seat.
Serves you right.
That atmosphere spread among the female soldiers.
“You lot too, you idiots…!”
At Lieutenant Kawana’s thunderous roar, everyone lowered their heads. Only Sergeant Narumi, watching the scene, had a bright expression on her face.
『Thank goodness… She’s back to normal… Just like the usual Lieutenant…』
The Lieutenant extended her hand to Nagato, who had been crushed under the pile of women.
“You okay…? Nagato…”
“I-I’m sorry, Lieutenant… For causing this kind of trouble…”
Frowning, Nagato took her hand.
“No… This was completely the fault of our idiots…”
She pulled him up with her arm. Today he was wearing the same camouflage uniform as the other soldiers instead of his usual black one.
“Um…”
Once he stood up, Nagato hesitantly asked the Lieutenant:
“May I… continue looking at the scenery a little longer…?”
The Lieutenant’s eyes widened slightly.
“Just don’t overdo it…”
Saying that, she returned to her seat next to Narumi.
“Sorry… I couldn’t do anything…”
“It’s fine…”
After giving a short reply, the Lieutenant glanced at Nagato. He was once again looking outside through the transparent vinyl window. His expression was strangely bright.
“He’s still just a kid after all…”
There was none of the usual sharpness in Kawana Rin’s voice when she spoke about Nagato. Sergeant Narumi immediately noticed this.
『As I thought… Something really did happen between the Lieutenant and Nagato-kun… Maybe the Lieutenant also…』
Unaware that her subordinate was making wild guesses, Lieutenant Kawana once again sank into her own thoughts.
Not about the Unit Commander. This time it was her second major concern.
『Night march… Black Hair Mountains… Mount Kurokami… And… Yamimaru… Shit…! Why do all these creepy things have to overlap like this… Do the Intelligence Department guys have some grudge against me…?』
Still, she quickly tried to shake off the anxiety and fear. Because of it, she had even made her subordinate Nagato go through something unpleasant yesterday. She was fully aware of that.
The success of this joint training would affect the reputation of the entire Infantry Unit. No mistakes were allowed.
If the Unit Commander’s mental state was unstable, she herself had to be more focused than anyone else. The words the twins had spat out yesterday about the military’s evaluation of the Infantry Unit still stuck in her throat like a fish bone.
Even so, she wondered:
『Why am I… so afraid of “Yamimaru”…? I should just ignore the nonsense from that crazy woman in the Logistics Unit…』
It was true that she was bad with ghosts and the like. However, she was also an independent woman and an officer entrusted with commanding a platoon.
She fully understood that fearing such things would make her unable to carry out military duties. She believed she had learned how to control her own fear.
Yet for some reason, the word “Yamimaru” clung to her mind and refused to leave. She began to suspect:
『Have I… heard of it before…? Did I encounter the name somewhere in the past…?』
The trucks carrying nearly a battalion’s worth of personnel and supplies began to split into two groups. Soldiers from units other than the Infantry would continue on to the final destination — Thirteen Lake Coast.
The night march training was about to begin.
Chapter 62: Night March Training (Encounter ①) – “Enemy”
“Haa… haa… haa… haa…”
She tried to calm her ragged breathing, but it was difficult.
『This can’t be helped…』
She tried to convince herself. After all, she had been running almost non-stop through near-total darkness, relying mostly on instinct.
Right now, she just wanted air. Her breathing was unbearably labored.
The white puffs of her breath were proof that the temperature had already dropped below 13°C. Even though it was past mid-June, this was a northern mountain region. The nighttime chill was no joke.
However, she didn’t yet fully feel it. More than anything, she needed air. Air was what she needed.
Her heart pounded violently — thump, thump — the sound echoing painfully in her ears. The powerful pump circulated blood throughout her body, causing her skin to steam.
『Please… don’t let this sound reach the “enemy”…』
While praying, she tightly gripped the black iron mass in her hands.
Zero Type Military Rifle.
This iron block weighing over 3 kilos was currently her only ally. Yet the grip, which should have felt familiar, was now terribly cold.
Thick, gloomy clouds that had begun spreading from midnight covered most of the sky. The few stars that managed to slip through the veil cast faint, weak light onto the trees.
She didn’t know whether she should hope for the wind to spread those clouds further or blow them away entirely.
Above all, she desperately wished not to be found by the “enemy.”
Her breathing was gradually stabilizing. Her body no longer craved oxygen so desperately.
She closed her lips and checked the dryness inside her mouth. She didn’t even need to — it was obviously parched.
Still, her thirst wasn’t bad enough that she needed to take out her canteen from her backpack in this situation — while being targeted by the “enemy.” She simply thought it would be nice to have some water.
Instead of reaching for her canteen, she lightly looked up at the misshapen beech tree she was leaning against. The white bark and graceful form — trees often called the queens of the forest — made even this deformed specimen feel reassuring to her.
『It’s just like… me…』
At Frontline Base TSUGARU, where she was surrounded by beautiful women, her complex about her own appearance was constantly stimulated. To her, the other women looked unbelievably beautiful and radiant.
She wondered how they could maintain such beauty and wonderful bodies despite the harsh training. Why couldn’t she be the same?
If the enemy nation resumed its invasion, this base would be the first target. Yet even under that stress, they all seemed so free.
Sergeant Narumi removed one hand from her lifeline — the rifle — and gently placed it on the beech tree’s bark. The rough texture, like elephant skin mixed with white and gray, seemed to soothe the trembling in her fingers.
“Am I… going to die here…?”
The words that slipped from her lips startled Narumi herself.
『What am I thinking…? This isn’t the time for that…』
Only then did she finally begin to pay attention to her surroundings.
Too slow!
If Lieutenant Kawana had been here, she would have yelled at her. It was only natural. If the “enemy” had found her during that time, she could have easily lost her life.
Leaning her back lightly against the tree trunk, she held her breath and strained her ears for any sound. Occasional winds rustled the vibrant green leaves and branches.
Insect and animal cries came from unexpected directions at unexpected times. Especially the deer’s warning cry — which sounded like a woman’s scream — chilled her spine despite her familiarity with it.
After carefully confirming there were no abnormalities around her, Narumi cautiously peeked out from the shadow of her tree.
In the clouded forest, even a few meters ahead was swallowed in thick darkness. Anything could be hiding there.
She leaned back against the trunk again and let out a long breath. Her allies were somewhere beyond that darkness. So was the “enemy.”
Even so, she had no desire to go back the way she came. That was what she had been running from.
“Won’t someone… come for me…?”
She whispered softly to herself. How reassuring it would be if the Unit Commander or Lieutenant Kawana were here. Getting separated from them was today’s biggest failure.
“Run…!”
Someone had shouted that at the time. She thought it was probably Lieutenant Kawana.
Pushed forward by that voice, she had run all the way here. Alone.
『If… I had been with Nagato-kun…』
If she had been running through this night forest together with Nagato, just the two of them… what would have happened to her?
Just imagining it caused heat to rise in her body. She wanted to touch her lower abdomen. That was what she thought.
Last night as well, she had imagined it and thoroughly played with herself. The dull, aching sensation from then was now slowly returning to that spot.
『Even in a situation like this… I…』
Narumi scolded herself. She pretended not to notice that the very voice of self-reproach was only further heating her lower body and giving her an excuse to slide her fingers down.
Her worthless self. Acknowledging that became her indulgence — a permit to do what she knew was wrong.
However, she should have realized much sooner that doing such a thing in this situation would be fatal.
The moment she gasped in realization, something sharp and hard was pressed against her throat. The cold sensation instantly changed her complexion from red to blue, like a high-performance litmus paper.
At the same time, the “enemy” covered her mouth and nose.
Chapter 63: Night March Training (Encounter ②) – The Truth of “Yamimaru”
“Don’t move…”
The voice whispering in her ear belonged to a woman.
『The “enemy” is also a woman…?』
While breathing the very limited amount of air through the gaps in the fingers, Narumi let out a small laugh through her nose. A second later, she found herself ridiculous for thinking about the enemy’s gender in a situation where she could be killed at any moment.
“What’s so funny…?”
The moment she heard that voice, all strength drained from Narumi’s body at once. When Lieutenant Kawana loosened her grip, Narumi collapsed onto the ground with a thud.
What had been pressed against her throat was apparently the back of a knife blade. It was already back in the sheath at the Lieutenant’s waist.
“Captain…”
Still clinging to her rifle, Narumi looked up at her.
“I thought… I was done for…”
“You idiot…! Who the hell cries in a place like this…!”
Lieutenant Kawana scolded her in a suppressed voice. The familiar scolding made Narumi sob involuntarily.
“Don’t cry…!”
The Lieutenant’s hand roughly ruffled Narumi’s head, messing up her berry-short hair.
“I’m sowwy… I was so scared…”
Narumi’s nose made a loud sniffing sound.
“Keep quiet…! That thing… is probably nearby…”
Narumi quickly shut her mouth. She wiped her eyes and nose with her uniform sleeve. The Lieutenant crouched beside her subordinate while staying alert and whispered into her ear.
“Take that off… The fluorescent paint makes it completely visible.”
The fact that she was still wearing her watch, and that no one had pointed it out, showed just how unexpected this “enemy” attack during the night march had been for them.
“Um… Lieutenant…”
While removing the watch from her wrist, Narumi whispered.
“What about thermal vision…?”
“It got taken out…”
Saying so, the Lieutenant removed the strap from her neck and shoved a small telescope-like device in front of the Sergeant’s nose. Both lenses were cracked.
“It was shot from the side… Amazing skill…”
Even Narumi understood how impressive that was. In this darkness, hitting only the night vision device held in someone’s hand — if done intentionally, it was practically a divine feat.
“After that… they haven’t fired again… They’re looking down on us… bastards…”
Still crouching, Narumi raised her knees into a stable firing position and peered through her rifle’s scope. It also had a built-in night vision device — something she had completely forgotten about until just now.
“Just who… is this ‘enemy’…?”
While continuing to scan the area with one eye, Narumi asked the Lieutenant.
“It’s Yamimaru…”
“Eh…!”
The unexpected answer made the Sergeant raise her voice involuntarily.
“Keep it down…”
“S-Sorry…”
Yamimaru.
Only after actually being attacked by it did Lieutenant Kawana finally realize why the name had been stuck in her mind so persistently.
It was actually quite simple. When the training was being planned, the name had appeared in the data passed down from the Intelligence Department to the Unit Commander.
In areas suspected of being used by enemy spies or similar operatives for landing operations across the country, Intelligence personnel had encountered an unidentified entity during their investigations. They had codenamed it “Yamimaru.”
The fact that even Intelligence specialists — experts in espionage — admitted it was “unidentified” proved just how high the “enemy’s” capabilities were.
That alone should have left a strong impression on Lieutenant Kawana. And yet she had completely forgotten about it until now.
Worse, she had been convinced — just as Hohosaki Ellie had said — that Yamimaru was some kind of ghost. Looking back, that was an utterly irrational conclusion.
“Yamimaru… is that the ghost the Logistics Unit Commander mentioned…?”
“No…”
Lieutenant Kawana hesitated for a moment on whether she should explain it to Sergeant Narumi. The data from Intelligence was Level A — information permitted only for officers of Second Lieutenant rank or higher.
But right now, Narumi’s life was on the line. If something happened to her — or to herself — without sharing this information, she would never forgive herself. She quickly came to that conclusion.
“Yamimaru is…”
Lieutenant Kawana conveyed everything she knew about it to her subordinate. There wasn’t much information. In fact, they knew almost nothing. Still, she thought it was better than saying nothing.
“So… that means… it’s an extremely dangerous ‘enemy’…”
Narumi said while slowly sweeping her scope.
“Who knows…”
As she spoke, Lieutenant Kawana was aware that a smile had formed on her lips.
『If it has a physical body… then I’m not scared…』
A clack clack sound came from near their feet — something hard knocking together. The Lieutenant immediately realized it was Narumi’s teeth chattering.
She was trembling.
It could be from fear, or from the dropping temperature. Their breaths were becoming increasingly white.
“It’ll be okay… right?”
Narumi asked in a wavering voice.
“The Unit Commander and the others…”
“You idiot…”
Lieutenant Kawana deliberately answered in a cheerful tone.
“It’s the Unit Commander we’re talking about. There’s no way she wouldn’t be okay.”
“Y-Yeah… you’re right…”
Narumi readjusted her grip on the rifle and corrected the position of the stock against her shoulder.
“If we’re going to worry, we should worry about ourselves—”
It was not Narumi, who was peering through the hybrid scope that combined digital night vision and thermal imaging, who noticed the enemy’s approach first.
“They’re coming…!”
At Lieutenant Kawana’s low, sharp warning, Narumi’s shoulders jumped. The muzzle of the rifle in her arms wavered unsteadily.
(10 o’clock direction… I’ll go out and draw them in… Once you have a clear shot… fire immediately…!)
She gave the signal with quick hand signs, then drew the white blade from the sheath at her waist. The next instant, she leaped out from behind the beech tree.
In the span of a single breath, her body reached top speed and zigzagged through the trees. By the time Narumi realized what was happening, the Lieutenant’s body had already flown toward the shadow of a beech tree ten meters ahead.
There was no gunshot.
No tracer rounds. No impact sounds.
Just as the Unit Commander had said before they split up, this “enemy” might not intend to use firearms to directly injure them. At least for now.
Even Sergeant Narumi could now sense the enemy’s general position and presence. She aimed the muzzle of her rifle in that direction.
Hyuuuuuu…
The sound of air being torn apart.
By the time she noticed it approaching, something had already wrapped around the tip of the rifle she was holding.
Chapter 64: Night March Training (Encounter ③) – Yamimaru’s True Strength
Before she could even think “Ah…”, Narumi was yanked to the ground along with her rifle. The force was tremendous.
Her chin slammed into the ground. Stars like colorful sugar candies burst behind her eyes.
Even so, she didn’t let go of the barrel — proof that she was no ordinary Sergeant of the Infantry Unit’s First Platoon.
『You…!』
Gritting her teeth, she forced the scattering afterimages out of her head and pulled the rifle toward herself. She felt clear resistance — the tip was definitely caught on something.
Whatever had pulled her down was now engaged in a tug-of-war. Narumi, provoked, rose up and accepted the challenge head-on. That was when it happened.
A floating sensation.
By the time she realized it, she had already fallen backward. The tension that had been pulling on the rifle tip vanished like mist.
As she fell, her finger instinctively squeezed the trigger. The reason it didn’t fire was because she had forgotten to disengage the safety.
『I’m such an idiot…!』
Frustrated by her repeated mistakes and the enemy’s mocking fighting style, Sergeant Narumi bit down hard. But getting irritated wouldn’t improve the situation.
If she didn’t want to die, she had to cool her head, stop making mistakes, and keep choosing the correct actions. Such a voice echoed in Narumi’s mind — it sounded like the Unit Commander or Lieutenant Kawana.
She quickly got up, pulled her rifle close, and leaned her back against a beech tree trunk to regain her composure and assess the situation.
It appeared the enemy’s weapon was an ultra-thin steel wire.
From the shadow of a beech tree roughly ten meters away, Lieutenant Kawana watched as the wire toyed with Narumi’s rifle like a child. While not on Nagato’s level, her eyes were also far superior to those of regular soldiers at seeing objects in darkness.
In her mind, she was already playing out several seconds ahead — visualizing how she would deal with the enemy next.
It wasn’t anything as exaggerated as precognition. She couldn’t see it whenever she wanted, nor did it appear just because she wished for it.
It only appeared suddenly when she was fully immersed in battle. And both her body and the enemy would move exactly as the vision showed.
She didn’t know if this was also an effect of “Kagutsuchi.”
At the very least, she had never heard of anyone else who received the augmentation possessing this kind of ability.
『I’m a monster too, huh…』
A self-mocking smile appeared on the Lieutenant’s lips. Moving at a speed that left that smile behind, she leaped out from behind the tree.
As if it had been waiting for that exact moment, a wire shot out from the darkness. The sound of tearing air rushed toward her face.
She saw that the wire moved freely because of a weight attached to its tip. Instead of dodging, she blocked it with the barrel of her handgun.
She was holding the black iron mass in the hand opposite the one holding the knife. She had drawn it from her waist holster right before dashing out.
She yanked hard on the wire wrapped around the barrel — testing the true strength of the “enemy” that had toyed with Narumi.
But the opponent did not take her bait. Instead, it flew through the air and closed the distance in a single breath.
This was still within the Lieutenant’s predictions. She pointed the handgun’s muzzle at the black shadow above her and pulled the trigger without hesitation.
Dry gunshots rang out one after another, shaking the night forest. Six shots. But that was it.
A fully automatic handgun could empty its entire magazine of 17 rounds in one second. However, before the magazine ran dry, the deadly iron mass was ripped from her hand.
The Lieutenant saw the black shadow overhead — darker than the night itself — undulate like a whip. At the same time, the handgun vanished from her grasp.
It hadn’t been stolen. She had let go of it herself — to lure the opponent into lowering their guard and transition to her next move.
The next instant, she closed the distance with the enemy who had landed on the ground and swung her white blade down at its neck.
Sparks flew. The enemy had blocked the Lieutenant’s knife. At some point, a black blade had appeared in its left hand.
The two blades creaked and trembled violently — proof that the arm strength of both fighters was evenly matched. If the struggle dragged on, Kawana Rin, who had the height advantage, would likely gain the upper hand.
“You bastard…”
Lieutenant Kawana spoke to the “enemy.” She wasn’t expecting a reply. It was a stalling tactic.
To observe the unidentified enemy and gather information. And to give Narumi time to catch the enemy in her scope.
But almost instantly, a cutting sound came from above. The Lieutenant had already predicted this too.
She twisted her body and dodged. A hard object gouged the dirt ground and bounced up. It was the handgun that had been taken from her.
Using that momentum, she delivered a powerful right roundhouse kick. The steel-reinforced heel of her boot whistled as it grazed the enemy’s head.
As the enemy’s upper body bent backward, the Lieutenant’s left leg shot up toward its flank. In her prediction, this strike should have knocked the enemy unconscious.
Her full-power blow did indeed sink into the enemy’s side — or so it appeared. But the sensation was like kicking a truck tire. The enemy’s body absorbed the impact.
The black shadow that leaped backward did a mid-air somersault and landed several meters away in the darkness. That was when Narumi’s rifle finally spat fire.
『I got it…!』
Narumi was certain.
Blue veins bulged around her eyes, which were pressed against the scope. The muscles supporting them were twitching violently.
It was a phenomenon that could only be caused by extreme concentration. The moment the enemy received Lieutenant Kawana’s attack, she had read its flight trajectory and aimed for the instant it landed.
She clearly felt the sensation of a bullet traveling over 1,000 meters per second piercing the enemy’s body. She also heard the impact.
Sergeant Narumi lifted her face from the scope and stared into the darkness. Although she had felt a solid hit, she wasn’t confident whether it had actually rendered the unidentified “enemy” incapacitated.
The enemy did not register on thermal vision. Meaning it either emitted no body heat like living creatures should, or it possessed equipment capable of hiding its heat signature.
Everything about it was on another level. That was all Narumi could think.
While she hesitated on whether to move forward immediately, she heard Lieutenant Kawana’s signal. Thank goodness, she thought.
『As expected… the bullet hit… Of course it did. There’s no way I would miss at that timing…』
She was not wrong. The bullet had indeed hit — the barrel of Lieutenant Kawana’s handgun.
Narumi silently stared down at the damaged iron mass lying on the ground. She couldn’t properly accept the reality before her eyes.
At that perfect timing when the enemy was landing and couldn’t dodge, the enemy had used its ultra-thin wire to catch and deflect a rifle bullet traveling at over three times the speed of sound — using nothing but a piece of iron less than 30 centimeters long. And in complete darkness.
『A monster…』
The ominous word that the Logistics Unit Commander had imprinted in their minds now seemed to have taken physical form.
“It’s human…”
At the Lieutenant’s voice, Narumi looked up with a startled expression.
The “enemy” that had effortlessly deflected the Lieutenant’s fierce attacks and Narumi’s bullet. In that final leap, the Lieutenant had not missed the color of mockery floating in the enemy’s eyes.
We were being played with…
That sensation remained vividly in the Lieutenant’s body.
『Bastard… looking down on us…!』
The look in those eyes clearly said: “I can kill you whenever I want.”
So why didn’t it? What was the meaning of letting them live? She didn’t understand. That was precisely why it felt like they were being toyed with.
“Is that… Yamimaru…?”
Narumi asked while tightly gripping her rifle. Her shoulders were trembling as much as her voice.
“I don’t know…”
Lieutenant Kawana still couldn’t bring herself to pick up the gun lying at her feet. It wasn’t because she feared a trap.
Picking it up felt like admitting defeat. It was almost a childish act of stubborn pride.
『No wonder the Intelligence Department is struggling…』
Just as the Lieutenant reached down to pick up her gun, the sound of air being torn apart assaulted them once again.
