Chapter 6: Intermission (The Commander’s Shinobi)
“Quite the… interesting show you put on there…”
Right after Nagato left the commander’s office, accompanied by the commander’s secretary.
Commander Asagiri was sitting deeply in the black leather chair in front of her desk.
On the right wall from her perspective, one of the metal cabinet doors suddenly swung open wide like a jack-in-the-box. The person who emerged was a small figure dressed entirely in black.
In contrast to the jet-black clothing, the skin visible through the gaps — around the eyes, palms, and fingers — was astonishingly white. Almost pure white.
Her eyebrows, eyelashes, and the hair softly tied up at the back of her head were platinum blonde. Her large eyes within distinct double eyelids were a pale, nearly transparent blue.
Furthermore, the soft swell of her chest, which could not be fully hidden even by the black outfit, clearly showed that she was a woman.
“What did you think…?”
Her outfit was clearly inappropriate for visiting the commander’s office in a frontline military base in the middle of a war. However, Asagiri Reika asked the question as if her presence was completely natural.
“You’re really going for it… aren’t you?”
At those words, Commander Asagiri’s well-shaped dark eyebrows rose slightly. A soft smile appeared on her glossy lips.
“Hmph… Yes. I suppose that’s true…”
It was as if the exchange with Nagato was playing right in front of her eyes. She slightly raised her gaze.
“I might have gone… a little too far. No… maybe not…”
As if shaking something off, she lifted her right wrist from the armrest of the chair.
“In any case… I had no choice but to make him accept that order. This is probably… my first and last chance.”
“You’re really going that far…?”
“Yes… I am!”
The commander’s back lifted away from the chair’s backrest. She spoke decisively.
“I have enough reason to do so…”
The figure in black bent her elbows, turned her palms upward, and shrugged. It was a gesture very similar to the one Asagiri Reika had shown Nagato earlier. Seeing it, the commander’s expression softened.
“Indeed… this probably doesn’t interest you…”
“Duh… Not my problem.”
“Not… your… problem…”
The commander slowly corrected her.
“Not… your… problem…”
After the black-clad woman repeated it, the commander nodded as if to say “correct.”
“You’ve improved quite a lot… in just a few years…”
From within the gap of the black hood, the pale-colored eyes stared intently at Asagiri Reika. The commander couldn’t tell whether those eyes were trying to convey something or not.
After a short pause, the black-clad woman asked from beneath her mask, “So…?”
“Ah, sorry…”
The commander leaned her slender back against the chair once more. The black leather backrest creaked faintly.
“Proceed as planned.”
“I’m not really… motivated.”
“Oh dear… Even you?”
The commander broke into a rather exaggerated smile.
“Honestly… lately it seems no one wants to listen to my orders anymore…”
The black-clad woman snorted “Hmph…” beneath her mask.
“You don’t like him…? Nagato…?”
“Not that… Well… he was a bit… weird.”
“Heh…”
The commander let out a surprised sound.
“That’s rare. Did he catch your eye, Kuratova?”
“Hm…?”
The platinum eyebrows of the woman called Kuratova furrowed.
“Eye…? What…?”
“Never mind…”
She waved her right hand lightly.
“But still… I’m counting on you.”
“I can’t guarantee… I’ll protect him.”
Kuratova muttered.
“Protect who…? Nagato? But that would…”
“No.”
She slightly lowered her head, then looked up at the commander with upturned eyes.
Perhaps because of the way the light from the window hit her, Asagiri Reika felt like she might drown for a moment in those pale blue eyes.
“By the way…”
She changed the subject as if clinging to driftwood on the water’s surface.
“Is she doing well…?”
There was only one “she” these two would talk about. The black-hooded head shook left and right.
“She’s… working too hard.”
The commander nodded at those words.
“But perhaps… she’ll finally be able to rest soon.”
“Hm…?”
Kuratova asked back without thinking. She understood the meaning of the words, but she didn’t understand why the commander had said them.
That puzzled her. But the next sentence made it clear.
“She’s on the list of nine…”
Kuratova’s eyebrows shot up, and her already large eyes grew even wider. Then she narrowed them and spat out:
“That’s… impossible. Absolutely not.”
After the black-clad figure disappeared back into the cabinet, Asagiri Reika once again recalled her exchange with Nagato, her gaze drifting somewhere above her.
‘When was the last time… a man asked for me so honestly… so straightforwardly… almost stupidly…?’
This time she immediately found the answer. And just like before, she waved her hand to brush the thought away.
